In the US they are burned with a lot of ceremony. Usually the VFW will take care of it. You should have some similar rules for your country.

Ditto what Arvon said. Burning is the correct method for disposing of an American flag (not sure about the other 180+ countries in the world)... it's just not done in the "waving it through the streets" method. With dignity and respect... and your local veterans organization will probably be happy to handle it.

Never leave a flag up for a long time, here it should not be put up before 7 am and must be taken down before midnight... by law, imagine that. Also good idea to take them down when the wind goes over 12 m/s, they last much longer.

AFAIK, the official rule in the US is that it can't be up in the dark unless it is spotlighted. It's all about respect...

I've never believed in flags, so I'd say throw it away. If you happen to respect it more than that, can't help you. I don't know what you australians do with your flags.

The Wikipedia page does seem to imply that this is mainly an American thing.

I just throw it away. No rules about flags in the country.

On a more serious tone. I think burning is the only way to rid your flag. Iron Greasel would you honestly just throw our loved blue and white to garbage bin?

It's just a bit of cloth, do whatever you like with it.
