Q'alooaith 04-09-2005 07:19 AM

Is either people keep calling you by your old name, or stop using any name..

I've also been told the folks will probably get upset if I don't ask them first, and give them the chance to pick it for me (uhhhgggg)

So, yea I'm thinking I'll probably change my name by the end of the year, trouble is I've not decided on my new name yet (hey, it's hard picking out names, ya know)

So I'd like to run some names by the gathered forumites, see what ya'll think.. Can I get away with em..

Name; Keita
Meaning; Forest
Origin: Celtic/Gaelic

Name; Teva
Meaning; Nature
Origin; Hebrew

I was also at one point considering Juno, but I've religated that because it's just a little out there..

johnny 04-09-2005 09:20 AM

Before you can change anything at all, i think you need to ask permission first.

Grojlach 04-09-2005 09:41 AM

Erm... Not to sound disrespectful, but don't you think Keita and Teva aren't a little bit "out there" as well, especially for a guy? And why would you want a name change anyway?

edit: according to babynames.com, Keita is actually a female name; teva is apparently used with both genders.

Give him a chance to explain....maybe he's considering a sexchange as well. That would be a perfectly good explanation. :D

Bungleau 04-09-2005 10:06 AM

Are you older than 18? If so, then you can do what you want. There's no need to let your parents pick out another name... what makes you think they'll do better the second time around?

If my kids change their names as they get older, I won't feel slighted that they didn't keep what we picked out. I will support them no matter what. My job as a parent is to get them to make their own decisions by the time they leave the house, not to continue making their decisions for them.

...

You have to get your head shrunk before they even consider it. And even then you have to prove you can function as the target gender for at least a year, and with waiting lists over two years long for NHS surgery and that's the basic stuff.. To awnser your question, no. Well not in the near future at least.

...

Now to do with the names, no I don't need permission, I'm old enough and ugly enough to DIY, and there's no legal way to change your name in england.. Your name is whatever you are know as, so as long as I stop being known by my old name I can pickup a new one right off the bat..

To get my new name on my passport there's got to be evidence that I've stopped using my old name and evidence that I'll be known by the new name, deed poll is the nearest you get to offcaily changing your name here.

Yes I know Keita is normaly a female name, but I'll redefine it.

Didn't know you were such a hippy... :D These are some pretty tree-hugging names. :D

Hmm I've got a mate who suddenly decided he wanted to change his name from Amin to Tamin-Joe (TJ). It's funny, he actually pretty much pulled it off, since that's how he always introduced himself after that point and he lost touch with most of his old friends except me and a few others and now he even has some ID cards with TJ on it etc. But his reason for the change was "If I ever get in trouble with the police, all people know is TJ, they'll never find me" :D so he wasn't trying to officially change his name, just the world's perception of it.

Q'alooaith 04-09-2005 10:40 AM

few others I've kinda looked at but disscarded, simply because they where too femanin, or I didn't think I could pull them off, or both;
Brenna, Makayla, Skyler

I'm still toying with Juno, it's just a slightly weird one, but probably too weird for my first name.

Mr. Mopery 04-09-2005 10:49 AM

If I may ask, why do you want to change your name?

armageddon272 04-09-2005 11:03 AM

How about you try to break a world record by just saying your name is "Mynameisbig" a couple of thousand times? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the record for longest first name is around 700 letters.

Q'alooaith 04-09-2005 11:03 AM

Because I've been meaning to do it for years.

Because I'm not aiming for a big name.

I think all tree would better suit a female forest elf, but if you're sure about it, whatever. In my own and non-english opinion, seeing names like "Antti" as quite normal, I think Juno is best.

RoSs_bg2_rox 04-09-2005 01:54 PM

Would you be so kind as to tell us your present first name? Also, why do you want such a weird name, call yourself John and you'l fit in just fine.

Ok, fair enough.

But why do you want to change your name to something which, in your society, is certain to attract attention on a daily basis?

By choosing a flashy name it seems that maybe you're interested in redefining yourself. To be honest, I don't think there's anything wrong with a person trying to redefine themself; people do it all the time, in different ways: changing hair colour, tattoos, moving to a new place, etc.

But if you want to redefine yourself--or the way others see you--maybe you should examine the reasons for it.

Anyway, just a thought. I mean no offense. On a similar topic, ever heard of a firefighter named Optimus Prime?

I'm impressed that old Icelandic distinguishes between different animal urines. What, pray tell, is dog urine?

Three letter name, starts with I

Aelia Jusa 04-09-2005 04:40 PM

I'm concerned that if you can't settle on a name you really want and are going through such things as asking strangers on a forum what we think, that you may not be happy with your new name for a long period of time. There have been many times in my life that I heard names that I thought were really cool or pretty or much better than my real name but if I had changed my name to them I would now be unhappy because I no longer feel the same way towards them. I think that would be particularly the case with a really unusual name.

Q'alooaith 04-09-2005 05:12 PM

I'm asking what you strangers think of them, like sticking your toe into the sea to see if it's too cold.

Vaskez 04-09-2005 05:15 PM

Well ok, since you asked, I don't like any of them. Sorry. I wouldn't even like them for a girl, let alone a guy.

Sir Degrader 04-09-2005 05:27 PM

Ditto. I think they're completely off the wall, and will be a liability in the future.

Well there is none... but Cow urine was used as a fertiliser and was pretty important to people (and disgusting) so I guess thats why it has it's own name.

Dave_the_quack 04-09-2005 05:55 PM

Juno, mate... if any at all. Scrap the other two...

But thats just my taste. Do what makes you happy.

Mr. Mopery 04-09-2005 06:48 PM

"Juno"...I dunno. Reminds me of Pacino's Tony Montana. "Hey mang, wha'juno mang?"

But it's better than "Teva"--a popular brand of sandals.

"Keita" just asks for people to laugh.

If you're into Hebrew, I'd suggest either "Orlah" or "Mohel"

Sir Goulum 04-09-2005 07:32 PM

Isn't Juno some Norse god? I dunno, honestly, I don't really like any of them. If I were to change my name, I would probably pick something a little more mainstream.

Aelia Jusa 04-09-2005 08:02 PM

Juno was the Roman goddess of the moon and protector of women.

Dron_Cah 04-11-2005 08:59 AM

Also the equivalent to the Greek Goddess Hera, IIRC. And I'm not a big fan of those names. Actually, "Ian" sounds fine to me.

Vaskez 04-11-2005 09:31 AM

Well I bet he's regretted asking this question here :D :D Maybe you should choose a Hungarian name, Ian? How about Tivadar or Attila? :D They're so cool :D

Speaking of which, have y'all seen the Generic Rap Song? You really should read the paper itself too, just to see how literally every inch of that video has been thought out. Oh, and watch it with the lyrics too

Ahem, no there is no legistic way to change your name..

As in, the only way to change your name in england is to become known as.
A deed poll is just a declariation that you are no longer going to be known by your former name..

I have been doing my reasearch..

It would have been less hassle just to say Yes.

shamrock_uk 04-11-2005 09:56 PM

From that link, particularly point 3:

Quote:

A Deed Poll for a change of name contains three declarations and by executing the Deed Poll (signing, dating and having witnessed) you are committing yourself to:

1. Abandoning the use of your former name;
2. Using your new name only at all times;
3. Requiring all persons to address you by your new name.

Thus, a Deed Poll provides documentary evidence that you have changed your name and that you are legally binding yourself to using your new name. Although a Deed Poll is an English legal document, it is recognised by all UK government departments and UK companies and organisations - subject to the Deed Poll being prepared by a competent authority such as ourselves or a solicitor.
What is that if not legally changing your name? You require others to use your new name, including the government - this is not simply a declaration that you won't be known by your former name, but a legal requirement that everybody use your new name too. You can even change your birth certificates I think.

If that isn't what you want, then what exactly is it that you're wanting?

Q'alooaith 04-11-2005 10:54 PM

it is too hard to explain fully.

Yes a deed poll can be used to get a change of name legaly reconised.

But you don't need one to change your name..

Do you understand what I mean now, there is no legal procidure you need to do to change your name..

I could put an annoucment in the local rag stating that I would no longer be known as and should hearby be refered to as..

You see, a deed poll is a way of saying "I am now [name] and long longer use [old name]" in the most simple terms.. It is basicaly a contract with yourself...

After that point you are legaly under the new name and calling yourself anything else is wrong, but people can still call you whatever they want, but on documents you must call yourself and let others know yourself to be under the new name.

So, there is no legal route you have to take to change your name, in other words there is no legal way to change your name, but the intent has to be to be known by the new name and not be attempting to defraud another person or orginisation by the new name.

No realy, I did do my research.
