To join go to this site: http://www.polarhome.com/cgi-bin/chat/irc.cgi

Get the nick you want.
Server = irc.galaxynet.org
Channel = #IWunofficial

If the server times out then try ionip.nl.galaxynet.org instead. It will take you to the same channel.

if the webclient doesn't work, you can always use a program called mIRC. It's downloadable at www.mirc.com

If you want to use your own mIRC program:

The program provided by dplax for the chat is just one of the different ways to get in the chat channel and made for easy use on an internet site. But maybe you want to use mIRC or a customized version of the program to connect to the chatchannel. You can get the newest version of mIRC at http://www.mirc.com/get.html. After installing it and running it for the first time, it will give the options popup right away. Fill your details in here, nickname and alternative need to be different from each other. Search for 'Servers' in the left category menu. Now you'll see the option to join a network and server.

IRC Network: GalaxyNet
IRC Server: GalaxyNet: Random server
After doing that either press the button 'Connect to server' or press ok and click on the little lightning icon in the top of your mIRC screen. mIRC is now connecting to the GalaxyNet server. When it's ready connecting type:
/join #ironworks

This will get you to join the channel named #ironworks, the channel created on the GalaxyNet server for people from Ironworks. If you want to make sure that you automatically join the ironworks channel every time you start up mIRC go to tools/options. Now go into options in category connect. You will then have the option to click the button called perform which will open a new pop up. In this pop up select the box 'enable perform on connect' and type /join #ironworks in the typing window. Press ok and you've got yourself a perform and IRC will automatically connect you to the right channel everytime you start the connection.

Enjoy!

DO you think it might be an idea to run it past Z, as you are using the name of the forum etc.

dplax 03-26-2005 07:21 AM

I have pm'd Ziroc about it just now. While he replies I think we can leave the channel up.

shamrock_uk 03-26-2005 08:32 AM

Argh, I can't log on :( Is irc.galaxynet.org the only thing I should put as a server entry?

johnny 03-26-2005 08:34 AM

Dude..where is everyone ? Bubba is all alone inthere.

dplax 03-26-2005 08:39 AM

Are you bubba johnny? If yes then go back to the log in screen and change the server and channel names.

Aragorn1 03-26-2005 08:41 AM

@Shamrock, i tried twice and it didn't work, but it worked on my 3rd attempt.

Yes. If you get timeouts then try signing in with the default settings, then going back a page and then joining the ironworks channel.

johnny 03-26-2005 08:45 AM

Connection timed out. It took more than 60 secs to log in, then it broke the whole deal off. I keep trying though.

johnny 03-26-2005 08:51 AM

Doesn't work for me. :(

dplax 03-26-2005 08:55 AM

Aragorn has just managed to get in. He used the program Irongrinder had suggested.

Aragorn1 03-26-2005 08:57 AM

Irongrinder's suggestion worked for me. Only takes a second to download. (ok so i've got broadband, but even with dial-up i don't think it would be too bad)

You beat me to it!

Is this a double post or do you mean the other programme didn't work?

dplax 03-26-2005 09:00 AM

For those for whom it doesn't work go to the site I said above leave the server at default and set the channel to #ironworks

Is this a double post or do you mean the other programme didn't work? </font>
That was indeed a double, i just downloaded IRC, and did as was told above, but when i join the chat i'm the only one inthere (again). Obviously that's not right, since you guys are all there for a while now.

dplax 03-26-2005 09:13 AM

Well at the moment there is only me and Bozos in there but you should at least see us. Are you sure you set the server and the channel well?

EDIT: Kakero just managed to join as well.

Kakero 03-26-2005 09:14 AM

I'm there, I think. dplax and the_boz is in there.

Xen 03-26-2005 09:32 AM

I got this message:
*** Welcome to CGI:IRC 0.5.4 (2004/01/29)

Erm what?

dplax 03-26-2005 09:37 AM

When you get that error usually waiting a bit solves the problem. Or try mirc as Irongrinder has suggested.

johnny 03-26-2005 09:40 AM

I'm in. :D

johnny 03-26-2005 05:18 PM

Feel free to join in anytime guys. And bring beer. :D

dplax 03-26-2005 05:52 PM

I saw you join in for a second Shamrock. What happened?

EDIT: I see it worked the second time.

The wonders of open-source software ;)

shamrock_uk 03-26-2005 06:28 PM

Just to help anyone else having problems, I've found that joining

ionip.nl.galaxynet.org
does the job for me after previous failures.

Sigmar 03-26-2005 07:18 PM

I signed in as "Ramgis" and proceeded to thoroughly confuse everyone.

Just like old times!

johnny 03-26-2005 08:53 PM

But you decided to wait until most of us were already gone again, right ? :D

Salinye 03-26-2005 11:21 PM

Alright, so I decided to mosey into your guys room and the three people there were sleeping! Blasted Time Zones! Oh well, have a lovely EAster!

Ziroc has replied to the pm I sent him and he said that we can run the chatroom but need to choose a different name than Ironworks.

I have now created a channel called IWunofficial at the same server.

I thought he might not like the forum's name attached to it.

Though you have the best intentions I’m sure Dplax, it was putting him on the spot so to speak, Ziroc obviously makes no money out of this forum (in fact I guess he loses a HUGE amount) however he has put vast time and effort into the 'Ironworks' name over the years. Copyright is a very complex legal minefield and I would guess he has no other option but to carefully guard the use of the name Ironworks. Are you sure it is even OK to use the term IWunofficial? Why not just use the Dplax name and ditch the term IW altogether? Some other older members may remember the saga with Ironworks and Microsoft some years ago

Anyway good luck with it :D

</font>
Have you ever Googled for the name Ironworks ? You'd be surprised how many hits come up. I bet some of em are older than this forum.

wellard 03-28-2005 07:38 AM

Never thought of that ... i'll try. But I wonder how many are forums?

That doesn't matter, it only shows that you can't claim the name as your own, since so many others use it already.

Sigmar 03-28-2005 01:10 PM

This thread should be "stickied" IMO.

I remember it, unless there have been multiple Ironworks and Microsoft problems...

shamrock_uk 03-29-2005 05:56 PM

I, too, would be interested in hearing about this. A google turned up this site, but I'm not sure if it's related.
