Here is why pretty much all others suck compared to IW.

1) Size of threads. The bigger ones have 3+ pages. That is WAY to much to read and then post. Alternatively, the smaller ones have very few answers.

2) Jackassness factor. In IW we have mods. Good mods. So whenever someone who likes to tyranize others does, Cloud or Z (or someone else) comes around and choinates them. Also, most of us aren't drooling fanboys who refuse to see any other points of argument.

3) Choc. 'Nuff said.

4) We have differing opinions. Go to the KMC forums and say you like Bush. Wow.

5) The fact that I can post a fight involving a celestial being again a movie boxer. And have the thread reach 2 pages. Again, I did that at KMC and nearly got banned.

Well I agree, IWs is the best, was my first forum, and still remains my favorite [img]smile.gif[/img]

Oh come on, there's plenty of other good forums around. If there's any bad stuff going on, i find that out soon enough, and i won't go back there, but that only happened a few times. I do agree that non of the other boards have the same feel as IW, but that doesn't mean they are crap.

IW was my first, and I only signed up to one other. I did just a minute ago sign up to an AvP clan forum, so I have to check that out for any comparison. I have visited other forums though and IW seems to be the most comfortable.

Ironworks is one of the greatest, I'll give you that. Some of the other larger ones I go to either have lots of flaming between members (a hockey forum) or is just massive and takes too long to load (simcity forum). I wouldn't call all others crap though. There are many pleasant forums that I visit daily and still enjoy them. Ironworks does have a certain feel to it, that none others seem to have, though.

My first forum was BGDungeon and some of the homies :D from there are still here with me now. That was cool, and a great shame it shut down, though there was more beef there. Then I transferred my home-base to Elysium, but also registered here so that I wouldn't be a newbie when (as I knew it would) this board balloned in member numbers. :D After 6 months or so, the Elysium had to be restarted a few times due to server and other problems (where all posts and members were deleted so we had to start again). After the 2nd restart, I couldn't be bothered anymore, so moved home to here. Then we had a board with Mel and Groj, but poor server performance killed that off, so my home is back here now, and wherever I go, whatever I do, I'll prob always check back in here. I remember it took a while to get used to the fuzzy, goodie goodie atmosphere here, :D but it's all good in the end.

LOL I remember the days when i checked out Pandemonium every day, being the only one there and having to wait 2 minutes for a thread to finally open up so i could read it quickly killed the fun though. Too bad, that was quite a good board too. I still see some of the old members from there on UFR.

Well I have to add that yes, I go to other forums as well, and they don't suck, just IWs is my favorite. [img]smile.gif[/img] I go to 3 other forums, one being a private one, and they all are unique and I never see any flaming or nastiness towards eachother on them. There are definitely some forums I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole though no doubt LOL.

It's one of the more consistant forums, and the moderations not totaly tyranical like some places..

Currently it's good, but other places are better for diffrent things, if I wanna talk shop about games I head elsewhere, IW's is good but it's limited in that you don't get people from some groups comming in here.

Ah, good old Pandemonium. That place was killer for loading times. [img]tongue.gif[/img] If only it could have stayed up, I enjoyed it as well.

Who knows, maybe we'll resurrect it if Groj can get a good host...

Yeah, IW is one of the best, but all other forums aren't crap. I mean I've been to a few there were, well, less than good (where even the mods help in flame wars), but those will always exist. I wish some of the old SS boards were still around, but I can't seem to find any of them on Ezboard. Those had great people on them, but eventually the online community died out because lack of popularity, had maybe 200 people on the servers everyday. Haven't been on it for quite awhile, but my guess is the master server got shut down.

Point is, afterwards, IW is my main board like the old SS boards were, and until it shuts down, not going anywhere soon.

Why not get a free host? Theres a couple out there that I know of that have free forums. They might not be very good, but it's better than nothing.

Okay on a serious note, I would not say IW is the best. Sure I have spend a considerable time here but i still somewhat consider myself as a outsider. I had a good time at 3do community board. Made lots of friends there. They make me feel like I'm one of them. Until that stupid EQ took almost half of them. Too bad 3do just have to kaput! I also had a good time at diabloii.net forum. Discussing about which amazon build is the uber haxxor :D Meet a couple of guys there that I can trust to mule my items.

Maybe if your old sig character would shave her legs every now and then, you'd feel less of an outsider. :D

There's this one other forum that's kinda special too, full of nutcases. It's related to games such as MOHAA and Call of Duty, military shooters. Kinda rude too, but not on a personal level. I don't have a problem with people being rude as long as they are not directly insulting people. But the moderators there make short work if they do. Just like we have a welcomewagon here for new members, they have a virtual Nutkick there to make the new ones feel at home. :D Solja stuff yknow. [img]graemlins/hehe.gif[/img]

The ones I have significant experiance with:

Bioware forums? Ask a question and be flamed a noob.
KMC? Ask a humerous question and get the thread locked, and have a warning sent.
Gaia? Way to damn big.
Rocky fans forum? WAAAAY to small.
Pichunter forums? Really nice, but morally bankrupt (no duh, its a porn site forum).

The world of forums is a much bigger place than that. I have personal experience with the following,

Keenspot
Keenspace
Kyhm
Strategy First
etc...( where etc = singular forums)

I disagree about long thread. They can have some very interesting drama.

It's impressive for such a big forum with a relatively young average age to be so orderly. I know of a few big forums which are just as good, though they have completely different themes and higher average poster ages.

However, I'd say that no big forum such as IW can compete with the tight atmosphere you get on small, isolated and specialized forums with a very limited (<20) number of active posters.

I like ironworks the best, although i do use others. I use the Dimmu Borgir forums, but all that seems to happen there is you get abuse thrown at you. I also use Dragon's Lair, but that's ickle right now... I'm also a Mod over at HiveTyrant's forum [img]smile.gif[/img] but i don't post so much after my spam-filled first night. So IW remains my fav.

I must be honest and say that while Ironworks is one of the better forums I have visited, it's definitely not my favourite.

This isn't so much a matter of how 'good' a forum is rather than it is a matter of personal preference - I like a certain other forum that is less crowded and lets one speak his mind more freely. ;)

You can speak your mind here as well, as long as there's nothing perverted or racist going on inside your head. :D

I use 2 forums. This and another one called Prestone, but that is a music forum.

Prestone is a lot more... angry. Modded well, but the tolerance is alot higher. Frequent swearing, insults and arguments are allowed, as long as they don't get too cheap or below the belt. (No rascism etc.) It's quite an elitist forum to get into, the unintelligent don't last long before grammer nazi's dive in on them to correct everything they say. People openly dislike each other and it's all honest.

For the last 2 years, IW's has been my Homepage, and it will probably stay that way for a while.

Well, I don0t go as far as Hive to put IW as my homepage, but on my keyboard I have the 5 favorites buttons, and IW is the first.
I've used a few other forums, left some, been kicked out of others for various reasons, the only other "forum" I frequent is DevART, and I ain't active there much...
But seriously, IW is the best by it's theme, mods, games, crowd and atmosphere.. I'd offcourse like it to get more active members, but I wouldn't like it to go over, say 30k, as that would IMHO make it too frantic, too unmaneuvarable.. I'd like it to get biger only fo the really empty and slow weekends and such..

I consider IW a very good forum, for what I use it for (which is this general discussion, and also the subject of the Baldur's Gate series).

Of the other BG-related forums I've visited, most are ok, but one stands out in my mind as being particularly horrible: the gamebanshee site. Man, is that a site of crap or what? I recently saw a thread get locked b/c of a similar thread having been posted. That's fine, but the kicker is that the previous thread was over a year old!

I visit many other forums, but most of them deal with either baseball or the martial arts. That's a subject that won't get too much attention here. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I have several other sites that I like quite well, Cloudy's, Nacht's, and LadyZ'd Oasis is my fav, the discussion boards in my sig, and, oddly enough, Ladies of Neverwinter.

Not that this isn't. It just gets too fast-paced for me sometimes. Which is why I will disappear for ages and then come back later, when I'm hanging around doing nothing (exam revision times mainly ;) ).

I like small forums with tight knit members rather than big ones with too much of an outsider looking in.
