I guess I made a mistake by shopping on eBay. I bought some Babylon 5 DVD's and now I'm getting sh!tty emails. I thought they had better protection on email addresses?

TheGodThatFailed 02-17-2005 08:12 AM

I still wouldn't trust ebay, people can shop there if they want, i just expect it to go wrong. Not a fan

Are you sure your address was scammed at ebay? I get several spam messages every day at my work email address - and it isn't listed with ebay.

I've just noticed there seem to be LOTS more spam in all of my email addresses over the last year or so.

Also, I've been buying stuff off ebay for over 2 years and never had a problem with any of the products I bought or sellers I bought from. I also sold some stuff on ebay, but haven't pursued that side of it very much.

Sorry to hear you're getting the crappy emails, but I'm not sure it's because you bought off ebay.

harleyquinn 02-17-2005 11:42 AM

I doubt it's from ebay.
There are generators that the spammers use now that just send out to combinations. So for example they know aol.com is an ip, so the program starts sending to cerek @aol.com cereka @aol.com cerekb @aol.com and so on and so forth and eventually it hits upon the combination that matches your address.

Sucks, huh?
I have an email address that no one but family and friends have, and even that gets a few emails a month.

Also, never use yahoo to send cards and don't let anyone send you a card from yahoo greetings. They sell the mail addresses, so you WILL get spammed from that.

dplax 02-17-2005 11:50 AM

When I created my hotmail account which is my IW nick @hotmail.com I got the first junkmail in less than a minute. I don't think ebay sells the emails, they should be making enough money off of auctions not to need this.

However ever since I created my gmail account, I did not get any spam there. It might be that gmail has a much better filter, or just that spammers aren't targeting gmail yet.

www.mailwasher.net

Lifesafer of the century.

I just started using Ebay, and love it, will get my first item tomorrow I suppose. Only problem I have is with people who snipe the items you think you have won... I did it once, not really proud of it, but if you can't beat them... join them... :D

quietman1920 02-17-2005 12:23 PM

Snipers took a Godzilla action-figure away from my 8 year-old son on Ebay. Granted, he was ordering with my wife and she isn't that street savy, but try explaining to a crying child, who isn't getting the toy they expected, that "well, that's just E*Bay..."

Enough money? Preposterous! No such thing! :D

Agreed though, hehe. My gmail account seems immune to the effects of spam as well, though when I check the "spam" section, it's pretty well stocked - they just do a good job of filtering thus far.

Chewbacca 02-17-2005 12:40 PM

I've never gotten spam from using ebay as either a buyer or seller. In fact in the last few months I've been on a DnD buying spree, buying 20 or so old books through seperate auctions. No spam at all.

Chewbacca 02-17-2005 12:45 PM

BTW, if the spam is from Ebay itself, you can opt out by changing your account settings. I opted in and only receive a few emails a month that have nothing to do with my transactions.

Oh yeah....
BE VERY CAREFUL of fake "phishing" emails that ask for account information or passwords. These are growing more and more common. People will steal your account and use it to commit fraud. Dont even click on any links in theses emails!!! You might get a trojan virus or worst that steals all your passwords and other sensitive information.

Check the ebay security site for more information.

^ That is where all your spam is coming from!

Orbost 02-17-2005 04:35 PM

I'll just add to what others are saying. I've bought and sold plenty of stuff on Ebay, and not have any problems with Spam.

So, check all your security settings, don't leave your email address on dodgy websites and even then you'll still get spam.

That's life!

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 02-17-2005 06:07 PM

Well, maybe it's just fluke, but I was not getting any of this stuff before signing on. I forward anything I'm not sure about to the webmaster to block.

Can I set Firefox to auto block emails? Or can I only junk them?

Wow, what a royal.. you know what!

I still don't have my Babylon 5 DVD's. They're held up in customes! The seller said he would send another set. It's already been a month now!

Then; 2 weeks ago I bought a food processor on there. I payed $15 less than going to Walmart, woo hoo right? Wrong! The package arrived and there is a $59 duty, shipping etc. fee on there. The item with tax at Walmart (Canada) is only $52. So I would basically be paying $89 for the thing.

So ebay, you know what you can do!! (middle finger smiley here)

T-D-C 04-05-2005 07:10 PM

Here is a tip for Spam. If you do get any SPAM, DO NOT reply saying to unsubscribe. This just confirms your address as a valid address.

Harkoliar 04-05-2005 07:32 PM

strange TDC.. i usually unsubscribe and they dont bother me anymore.

T-D-C 04-05-2005 07:34 PM

Thats if they are legitimate emails, most spammers will then confirm your email address from the unsubscribe and sell it onto another spammer.

But if at first the email they sent the spam to is invalid, wouldn't they get a somekind of error message? Like I get with hotmail when I wrongly type a person's email adrress?

They could and probably do. However if you ignore it then they assume that it is an inactive mail box. if you reply then they know someone is there reading it.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 04-05-2005 10:26 PM

It may not be so bad in the US, but the guy must have known I would pay all those extra fees. Even the guy I bought the DVD's from is in the UK.
I'm done with the stupid thing! At least if I buy from a store I have someone to yell at.

That might not be eBay's fault. A guy on another forum I frequent lives in Canada and recently bought a camera lens from someone in the US. It turns out that UPS and Fedex both charge a "brokerage fee" when shipping over the border. It cost him almost $80 in brokerage fees on a $250 lens. He could've gotten the lens cheaper locally. Sound familiar? He said the Post Office only charges $5. If your shipper didn't know the difference, maybe he picked what he thought would be the fastest and/or most reliable method. If he hasn't sent the 2nd set yet, contact him & specifically request he use the Post Office.

krunchyfrogg 04-05-2005 11:09 PM

I had a few problems with ebay. One guy (who actually had a negative feedback rating!) never sent my BGI disc (no surprise there!).

Another was a very reputable seller, who never sent me a karate gi. I got a GREAT price on it, and he apologized saying that he was all out of them, and that he wouldn't charge me. I found out later that week that he was just pissed about the low price, because he started selling them again, but at a higher minimum price. I got NOWHERE with complaints.

Suffice to say, don't buy a gi or gym equipment from this one seller. I'll post his name later after looking it up.

As for e-mail problems, not too many. But I do get e-mails I am suspicious of, so my advice is to never respond to "official ebay emails"
Oh fo sho!!!

I brought my bike here in Gib, but I've been "pimping" it up over the last year through parts I've been buying through eBay and I've been satisfied with EVERY item I have recieved (like, well over a 30...there's been a lotta blingifying going on ).

As long as the seller has a PERFECT feedback way into the 500s or so and has an eBay shop of his own (and it helps if he's a "powerseller" too than you know you're in good hands.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 04-06-2005 06:01 AM

I agree that's it's not ebay's fault. The problem is that you just don't know who you're dealing with. The guy that was selling the food processor sold 4 of the same ones, at the same time and other items as well. There's no way that this guy wouldn't know that there are high fees like this. He should have been honest about it.
Really, what's the point in shopping at ebay."ca"! That's Canada, where I live! I wouldn't even think about duty.

I just posted a negative in the sellers profile. After 3 emails and no reply I felt I had no other choice. I hope I can reverse the charge on my credit card, if he doesn't do it.

RoSs_bg2_rox 04-06-2005 06:33 AM

I have never had any problems with ebay. In fact, quite the contrary. Everytime I buy from ebay I make a massive saving, I've saved hundreds of pounds on auctions, and I thoroughly believe in checking on ebay before you buy things in stores (mind you, I buy most of my stuff from the net these days). But it makes sense. Sellers with over 100 sales and 95% + are good enough to buy from. Afterall, everyone has to start somewhere.

Cerek 04-06-2005 06:51 AM

I can only echo what many others have said. After about 4 years of shopping on ebay, I've never had a single problem. Of course, I've only bought about 40 items total in that time, so I'm not a "powerbuyer" by any means.

One suggestion I always make is to make sure you CHECK THE SHIPPING CHARGES!!!

Many of my purchases have been PC games. I got backup copies of BG1 & 2, IWD2 and NWN HotU from ebay sellers - all at very good prices. However, I had to skip several auctions before finally buying because many of them would be selling the games for less than $10, but the shipping fees were $15 or more. So whenever I see a really low price on the item, I immediately look to see if the vendor is trying to make his profit from the shipping charges.

I've sold a couple of items myself on ebay, and I always choose the option of letting ebay determine what the actual shipping charges will be, but I don't have to do that. I could just as easily say that shipping will be a flat fee of $15, even though it may only cost me $5 or less to actually ship the item.

I don't know about the custom fees, whether the seller knew about them or not. If so, he/she definitely should have mentioned those in the shipping fees. But it is possible the seller didn't know about that.

So the other word of advice is to email the seller BEFORE the auction ends and ASK if they know of any extra fees like that - especially if you are buying from a vendor in another country.

Well, both of those were registered in the USA and UK, maybe you are the one that should have considered this. It's not the seller fault if you bought his stuff...

Q'alooaith 04-06-2005 04:13 PM

I don't use Ebay and get around 7-10 junk emails per hour.

They all get flitered out, but thats the price of using the same simple email for four years.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 04-06-2005 09:40 PM

I do blame the seller Luvian, only because I buy from ebay.ca not ebay.com. It's the Canadian site, so there should be no duty or any other hidden charges. That's the whole point.
I bought a DVD 5 pack of the Babylon 5 movies there were no fees at all.
I'm just on the phone with UPS and she told me that the guy put a value of $100US on the item, which I payed $18 for, therefore I'm being charged $38 brokerage fees and $18 tax. What an idiot!
