Okay three men are lost in the woods and they find a hotel in a clearing and go in. They speak to the man at the desk and ask for a room. The manager says:

"Sorry, we only have one room left, so you'll have to share, and It's £30 for the room"

The men hand over 10 pounds each and go up to their room.

About an hour later the manager realises he made a mistake, it's only £25 for the room, so he gives the bell boy £5 and asks him to go distribute it between the three men. The bell boy walks to the room and realises that £5 doesnt split between 3 people. So he keeps £2 for himself, and gives the men £1 each back.

Now heres the puzzle.

The men got a pound back each, so they paid £9 per person. 3 x 9 is 27, and the bell boy kept £2 for himself.

£27 + £2 is £29.

From the original £30 spent £1 is missing.

Where has the missing £1 gone?

Stormy, delete that thread so others can have a go!

My Dad told me and Beaumanior this years back, and he never told us the answer. Had us going for about 4 years with us trying to work it out!

But yes, your right!

That's an interesting question :D Sort of like the hare and a turtle in a race where the hare will never pass the turtle.

Answer PMd. You just have to answer the right question...

Hivetyrant 12-23-2004 12:42 PM

You're right. It depends on what question you answer and what you count.

PM'd you an answer that assumes British money works in a logical way.

7 out of 10 - what missing squids ;)

Beaumanoir 12-23-2004 05:07 PM

Hehe basically, the puzzle is brilliant in its own way. Depending on how you look at the question, it's the simpleist riddle ever, yet also an impossible one. It's all to do with how you count it.

Amazingly simple: 25 + 2 + 3 = 30

Physically Impossible: (3 x 9) + 2 = 29

It's odd. Quite funny really.
