The war for the fastest computer continues...

RevRuby 10-28-2004 09:07 AM

but can it load windows quickly?

lol it's sounds great anyway. who knows maybe it can detect problems before they blow up.

aleph_null1 10-28-2004 09:40 AM

42.7 teraflops... this is getting ridiculous :D

Ilander 10-28-2004 09:40 AM

Is a "flop" the same thing as a hertz? I wouldn't think it was...but I'm no computer expert...

Harkoliar 10-28-2004 09:41 AM

good stuff.. all the processing power.. geez..

aleph_null1 10-28-2004 09:43 AM

flop == floating point operation

So 42.7 teraflops == 42.7 trillion floating point operations per second... of course a flop is architecture dependent, so the number doesn't really mean that much...

... but when do benchmarks ever?

Beaumanoir 10-28-2004 10:29 AM

Wow imagine playing minesweeper on a beast like that!

lol, with the money that they spent on it, you would expect it to turn into a Destroyer and let you really go Minesweeping

Yeah, I can almost Overclock my computer to about that speed
Overheats a bit though :D

Last time I tried it melted through the desk.

Hivetyrant 10-28-2004 10:50 AM

:D , hehe, oh well, mine only gets to about 3000 degrees, for some reason my water cooling kit starts expelling steam... :D

Dron_Cah 10-28-2004 03:18 PM

Yeah!! Finally a system that can play Doom 3!! ;) :D

Xen 10-28-2004 03:47 PM

That's fast. I think that HL2 shoud run pretty smoothly on that one. :D

Intrepid 12-15-2004 11:03 AM

reading today... just a coincidence i found this thread, but anyway, in competiton with this NASA computer, IBM has further increased the processing power of their "8000 power PC" processor bassed system, to sustain a claimed 70.72 teraflops.

So i found that fairly wow.

Hivetyrant 12-15-2004 11:15 AM

Holy crap, thats pretty damn good, do you have a link?

It's actually in "PC Authority" magaziene, the only link it gives is to www.ibm.com, but I have looked there, and it doesn't have anything new.

I might post again if I find an article or some pictures or something.

Intrepid 12-15-2004 11:26 AM

I found a more detailed story.

Hivetyrant 12-15-2004 11:35 AM

look at the size of the thing!!
They say it has "10,240 Itanium 2 processors"

It holds "440 terabytes of data"

*falls off seat and is blown through 3 sets of walls into his garden by this revelation*

To quote Jazz, "IT'S GYNORMOUS LOOKIN'!"

Hivetyrant 12-15-2004 11:43 AM

lol, I remember back a while ago when computers the size of Basketball courts could only process at about 100mhz

Iron Greasel 12-15-2004 02:49 PM

That thing is... Big?
How much would it cost, I wonder...

Sigmar 12-15-2004 02:51 PM

Roughly a bajillion smackaroos.

Roughly.
