Did anyone in the U.S. know that today, homosexuals are recommended to call in sick to work today, as well as print a receipt off from their ATM (masking out the acct. #), and send it to...somebody in the state...I don't know who...
all in an order to force recognition. In other words, anybody that calls in sick to work today will automatically be assumed homosexual by their bosses or at very least faking sick for the cause. I can see problems with anyone who really is sick today, trying to convince their boss that they really did need to be off. I remember in school we had Senior layout day where al seniors were supposed to stay home all day. Of course it was counted as an unexcused absence, but to the seniors that wanted to go to school and were really sick, they had a tougher time convincing the teacher that they deserved an excused absence. Well, anyway, what do you guys think? Don't this sound like one of those e-mail things that go around everytime gas prices go up and then you get an e-mail stating that on such and such day, nobody in the cuontry should buy gas to show the economy that we won't stand for it. How many people actually do that stuff? How effective is it? [ 10-08-2004, 09:03 AM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ] |
Well I dont think anything like that is going to cause recognition in anyone except a few angry bosses, and I agree, I fell sorry for the sick people who are going to get some strange looks when they go back to work :D
|
I wonder what would happen if someone called for a Straight Reconsign Day?
|
Well, Arvon, I think Sanfransisco could prolly runs as normal. :D ;)
|
Stole my post, dear Larry.
In theory, it's supposed to demonstrate the buying power of the GLBT community and its allies. It *is* an official thing. The question is simply how many people will do it. At my campus none in my circle will be shopping today. And it's not awareness day, it's a boycott... October is GLBT History/Awareness Month. October 11th is National Coming Out Day, and October 12th is Matthew Shepard Day. |
This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of.
What good does it do not to shop and to call in sick? |
Why is it being homosexual is such a big thing? If you are, then you are, skipping out on work won't do anything except make a decline in your paycheck.

I wholeheartedly agree with the concept here. Homosexuality IS a big thing in the world today, Gangrell, because, quite honestly, many of the more conservative places in the world are now having to see in right in front of their faces---which of course leads to the power struggle that we see so much nearly every day.
It's just a shame that the entire world cannot accept the reality, because if they did, then the "awareness month" thing would indeed be unecessary. |
Darn convenient to have it on a Friday. Makes the weekend longer for homosexuals.
|
Well, my standpoint of it is, if thats who you are, then thats you, if someone has something to say about it, that's their problem. It's not an uncommon thing down here in southern Indy, so I'm not bothered at all by them. But my point is if you were going to have an awareness day, wouldn't it make more sense to have something community related instead of skipping out on work?
|
That is an excellent point, Gangrell.

See? You had a worthy contribution to the thread! You didn't have to start it to be important! We still love ya! |
I had no idea it was Gay Awareness day. I missed a midterm exam at college (overslept) and called up my professor afterwards, using the old "I broke down on the way to class" excuse. The thing is though, I have my doubts about his sexual orientation and after reading this thread, I'm worried he might come onto me - loads of gay men already do. What should I do, cats?
|
Damn -- and, here, I read this thread and it's almost the end of the day. I coulda been a lesbian today, and called in sick.
|
Hmmmm............I wan't aware it was an awareness day. If I was previously made aware of todays awareness I could have made others aware. Given my ignorance of todays awareness, I want to make you aware that I would rather not have been made aware of today's awareness and remained blissfully unaware.

Just handle him like you'd handle an ugly chick: Make it absolutely 100% clear that you're not at all interested & you're good. Yes, I've done it several times before :D |

You don't notice things until they're gone. That's the theory behind calling in sick to work or going to class but not contributing; it shows what the community brings to society. Not buying things demonstrates the economic power of the community... and a day like this reminds the community that it *is* a community.

"I'm flattered, I truly am, but sorry, I'm not gay. Do us a favour and give me the number of some of your hot girlfriends, k?" Alex, gay men coming onto you is only a bad thing if you choose to see it that way. In my opinion, you should take it as a compliment; you have absolutely NO idea how picky gay men are... (trust me buddy ;) ) You must be hot stuff When IW does a huge big international get-together-thing, if anyone hits on you, palm them off to me, k? LoL I'll send the chickadees that hit on me your way :D |
To tell you the truth, I feel kind of stupid that I had no idea about this. Ahh well, its not happenin in OZ so I can't get too cut up about it.

Dave, it is flattering, don't get me wrong. It's more of a mild unease thing, which is only natural for a lot of heterosexual men to feel. Also, I got a two-handed ass-grab while at the Amsterdam Gay Parade in August, so I think my paranoia is justified.

Glad you don't have a problem with (as some people have put it in this thread) "THEM", or in this case, me |

It made me jump, I'll admit. I didn't find it pleasant, but I totally understood that it was all in fun and just part of the evening. I wouldn't ruin something that's only meant to be a laugh. I was piss-drunk anyway, my ass was anyone's that night, LOL.

I support all gay and lesbian people out there, because in many countries they are always ridiculed and treated differently just because they are different to the norm.
And hopefully in america in every state all gay couples can marry, I think that would be a great thing to see |
Whoa, hold on, let's not open that can of worms in GD; gay marriage is second only to the American election in terms of being a "hot-button" topic on CE. Let's not have it take over TWO forums.
There's so many "Awareness Days" of various kinds going around now that it's hard to keep track of them all. Anybody that didn't take this opportunity to call in sick is excused. ;) NB. Just so nobody thinks I'm dodging the hard issues, I'll state up front that I support functional equality AND gay marriage - it just so happens that it's legal in my province already, so I don't have to shout about it. :D Anybody that wants a painfully well-reasoned justification of my viewpoint or just a good ol'-fashioned argyment is welcome to stop by CE anytime. Now on to the REAL problem - how to prevent the Super-Stud Alex from suffocating under the attentions of every person he encounters... |
Aerich, stuff THAT real problem, lets threaten to grab Alex's ass until he tells us his SECRET :D
That way, EVERYBODY is happy lol. |

Where are YOU normally kicked? |
Okay Aerich (whoever you are), since this isn't the first time you've given me agro on IW, I can only assume you're holding some sort of personal grudge against me. This is fine, but I'd rather we have it out over PM. This goes for anyone else too. I don't want people's threads de-railed by subtle anti-Alex undertones to which I feel complied to respond to. How anyone can take a statement made in jest and borne out of complete mock-bravado even one percent seriously is beyond me, but there you go.
|
but I'm already aware of gays and lesbians, why do we need a day for it?
EDIT: Almost forgot to slap Arledrian on the arse on the way out [ 10-09-2004, 04:17 PM: Message edited by: Downunda ] |

Yeah, right on, son. I'm out of this forum.
