Seriously! My friend gave it to me because he bought a new one. The problem I guess is the DVD reader or something...I put the disc in (*brand new discs*) and half the time it loads, and the other half it say "cannot read the disc"...OR I'll be waiting to load an area in KotOR and it stops half way and says "there is a problem with your disc, it may be damaged or dirty" GRRR! I just spent the last 20min trying to restart it, but it won't read the disc, and when it does, it craps out when I'm loading my saved game.
Now...are there people that fix this stuff...or should I beat this one with a bat and go buy a new one? |
the bat does sound fun! I dunno, maybe a radioshack?
|
Well, at least you found out why your friend decided to buy a new one, and was so eager to part with the old one...

I think you should get a disc cleaner. If you don't already have one then buy one from a store, they are cheap and will solve your problem.
|
If cleaning dosn't get it for you here is the customer support # 1-800-4MY-XBOX . There is a trick that works for ps2 that might work for xbox, take two peices of scotch tape about an inch long each place them on the painted side of the disc like an = with the hole in the disc between them do not have tape touching the hole or the edges of the cd.Don't know if it works on xbox. You might also try a cd lens cleaning disc, might just have crud on it.
|
I'm with sageridder on this one...my gamecube does that on occaision, too...but they don't make a cleaner disc for it :(
Oh, and just curious, can you open an XBOX up with a normal screwdriver, or do you need something propreitary? |
Your Xbox is brought to you from those wonderful folks in Redmond, WA. You know, the same folks that provide you with Windows.
Use the you'll feel better afterwards. |
Hmm...lens cleaning disc might work. They probably sell them at local gaming stores right? I get all my gear and such at Gamestop.
Ilander, I dunno if you can bust an xbox open with a screw driver. Let me check -well I didn't see any screws, so I'm guessing no, there must be a special tool. |
its an evil machine build by bill gates!
so its no miracle there are no screws! Hammertime!!!! :D |
But then I won't be able to play KotOR :(

Buy KoTOR for PC instead. Cheaper than buying a new Xbox.

or buy a game cube with resident evil :D |

Well LB, simple, buy the PC version or a different console. |

Xbox have DRE problem like PS2 does? Anyway, call Xbox support and tell them to fix it.
|
I've had the same problem with my XBOX and Gotham Racing. Worked fine for a few months then won't even load in the XBOX any more.
The CD works fine on my mates XBOX but won't load on mine. |
The only thing an Xbox is useful for is running Xbox Linux :D
I've got a cluster of five Xboxes running here -- there is no cheaper supercomputer... |

To open an Xbox you must pierce the tape that covers the screwholes. Feel around on the bottom of the Xbox where the tape is and you will find them. Be warned- once you crack the case Microsoft wont help you at all, though they only give a 90 day warranty on a new system anyway so it is unlikely you will get any help from them if you got the system 2nd hand. Anyway, if you dont want to crack the case I would use a vacumn cleaner w/hose to get the dirt out. Open the CD tray and put the hose right up to it. This works well if you have a shop-vac or a powerful vacumn device. If you do crack the case be sure to use a lint-free cloth to do any cleaning. Worst case scenario-you can trade in an defective xbox towards a new one. We give around $50.00 at my Gamestop. Good Luck! |
$50? I sold mine at Gamestop for $100. Just sticking with my PC now and good ol Morrowind.

destroy it and donate more money to them by buying another one? .... actually they loose money on xbox sales, so yeah, in that case, deffinatly do that. although you might save more money cleaning the lense yourself, but i doubt that will work, if not take it to an electrical kinda place and ask them what they can do for it, radioshack (as mentioned above) sounds good. |

how do you connect them together? and i wouldn't think resoloution would be to great since it is designed for a tv, is it? i mean you can adjust that can't you? I don't like the idea of chipping it though. |
I complained about it to the friend who gave it to me and he's agreed to come over and clean/fix it for me. If that doesn't work I'll probably just buy a new one.

I had this same problem when I bought my used Xbox about a year ago. I tried the cleaning disks and they worked for about a day, then the stupid messages started popping up more frequently then ever. I took the machine back to the store and the owner told me that Microsoft has used three diff. DVD players in the Xboxes -- the older ones have some crappy generic brand that usually fails. He switched out the drive in mine with one of the new drives (Philips I think) and it works great now. You may have to send in your machine to Microsoft to get it replaced. I don't reccommend opening it up yourself because it breaks some labels when you lift up the panel and will void the warranty.

"Dude, the xbox you gave me is driving me f*cking insane." "lol, now you know the hell I went through. I'll stop by this weekend and see if I can fix it for you." It's not like I told him "I can't believe you gave me that piece of shite, I demand you fix it!" Don't attack me, I don't think I really deserved that... |
Ok. Sorry dude :D
|
First off...Hiero, that's no way to address a Lady...
Anyway, what would your friend have done to fix the thing, LB? Has he opened it before???? |
