First one -- pretty easy. I take the brain out by only looking at the first letter.

Second one... there! no, there! no, wait, over there! Grrrrr....

T-D-C 08-23-2004 10:28 PM

They are good.

The first one is easy. As bungleau said you just look at the first letter and don't read the whole word.

Or you can turn it upside down :)

Cloudbringer 08-23-2004 10:41 PM

OOOh, these are insidious puzzles....LOL, I don't see a black dot...help me...I'm black dot deficient! :D

Felix The Assassin 08-23-2004 10:52 PM

Too easy. Did you steal those from the military link? Sham.

First one is a real test, used to identify folks with color spotting issues.

The second of which, is also real. It's part of a marksmen-ship trainer, where you must fully identify your front sight post. To clarify, think of the circle as the rear peep sight, standard on all M4/16 series, and the blinker as an unsteady hand attempting to align the sights. The illusion is created by.............

1) Quite easy. Just try to randomly look at the word, not taking in what it says (seeing them as 'shapes' rather than 'letters').

2) .... No comment.... *grumble*

For you. Think of it this way. If you cant see the color that the word/shape is written/desgined in, then what? That's the real factor. Red, Green is the most common. With yellow, then blue. All individual NVGs (Night Vision Goggles) are green. Which means, a person with green color difficulties has a hard time with NVGs. Then can see, but they cannot ID targets, nor navigate because they cannot decipher depth or distance.

LordKathen 08-23-2004 11:55 PM

I like this stuff. The second one has been my desktop. :D

Aerich 08-23-2004 11:55 PM

1) Ok. It just takes concentration and/or a mental device.

2) Grrr. There better not be a black dot...

Lauren 08-24-2004 12:53 AM

I ended up stuttering for the first mind bender...lol I don't usually do that.

Aelia Jusa 08-24-2004 03:50 AM

I like the second one - it's cool if you move your eyes around in circles - the black dots make a cool pattern! ;)

It's actually much more than this. The Stroop task is a very common neuropsych test for identifying attention and cognitive flexibility. To be able to say the colour and not the colour name you have to able to inhibit your automatic response, which is to say the colour name because reading is an automatic task for (most) adults and older children. So you can test whether someone has attention problems if they are unable to concentrate enough to inhibit the automatic response, and also can identify things like impulsivity - someone who is impulsive can't inhibit their responses either. Also useful if for instance someone is suspected of having a language disorder - if they find it as easy to say the colours when they are presented in blocks, where there is no interference from reading, as when they are presented as words of different colours, then there is something wrong with the language processes of that person.

i agree! die dots die!

Lauren 08-24-2004 07:15 AM

In the second illusion, there is no black dot at all but just white dots. The black squares confuse your eyes and cross references the colours.

Jaradu 08-24-2004 07:22 AM

Okay, I did some extensive lab research* on the second trick and found out that it's actually the grey lines. Without the grey lines, you just see white dots on a black background. Perhaps this is because removing the lines stops the blackness from being squares, as Lauren said this is what makes it work.

*Copied into MS paint and removed the lines :D
