This is a (hopefully long-running) thread *about ice hockey* dedicated entirely to the World Cup of Hockey and those fanatics among us that want hockey 24/7.
The offical WCH website is http://wch2004.com/ Exhibitions started this week. Sweden beat Slovakia 2-0 yesterday. Two Swedish Canucks (Naslund, D. Sedin) scored the goals. Germany tied Russia 3-3. Germany - Goc (2), Erhoff. Russia - Samsonov, Afanasenkov, Frolov. Anybody know if today's Canada-USA exhibition game is televised? I would dearly love to get a hockey fix, even though Mario is sitting it out. Edit: My apologies for the confusion. [ 08-23-2004, 04:07 PM: Message edited by: Aerich ] |
Lol, dropped into this thread thinking this was about field hockey so I'll go right now
Anyway I'm a field hockey goaly and I was wondering if ice hockey is just as warm as when I wear full protection. Anyone knows? |
Aerich, I could be wrong but I get the feeling team Canada will dominate the World Cup in this tournament as it as a solid team.
The other teams including the US as way to many weaknesses to compete with the team. Team US has old forwards, young inexperienced goalie. This formula is wrong as it is better to have old experienced goalie, and young legs with lots of skill and speed on the front lines. I believe Canada will blow the competition away but there may be some good games and even matchups among the other teams. [ 08-23-2004, 03:07 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |
Which hockey?
Would be good to delineate on an international board, as "hockey" to many of us is "field hockey" to you, while "hockey" to you, is "ice hocey" to us. Clarity is a good thing. |

I just recently saw on a sports channel that their WCH coverage starts on Aug 30. Meaning that no exhibition games will be shown on Rogers Sportsnet. :( Not sure about TSN.
Edit: I may have my channels crossed, come to think of it. It was showing Olympics, so it could have been CBC. I'll check my listings as soon as I get home. [ 08-23-2004, 05:31 PM: Message edited by: Aerich ] |

We should blow the competition away, but you never know. I, personally, think it'll be a battle between Canada and Sweden. |
Well, we start slow again. 3-1 loss to Team USA in our first exhibition game. Apparently got the early lead then sat back. Kudos to the US for a strong forecheck.
I'm seeing parallels to Salt Lake. Lost the first game to a good forechecking team, which served as a wakeup call. The D is a little younger this year (loss of Blake and Pronger is huge), so other teams may have a better chance to force turnovers. On the good side, Brodeur was sharp, stopping 18/18 shots in the 30 minutes he played. And Mario sat out, as did St Louis and Richards. |
Are Blake and Pronger injured or something?
|
Yes.
Blake sustained a shoulder injury during the playoffs and had an operation. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with Pronger, but I'm inclined to believe it's not a cop out. It's listed as an "undisclosed injury." He missed almost a full season two years ago with wrist and knee problems, he plays a lot, and he takes a lot of punishment. He had a special type of experimental surgery done on his wrist, and he's the first athlete to have it done and still compete. So it's never 100% healthy. |

Quick injury update.
USA defenceman Jordan Leopold (club team: Calgary Flames) sustained a concussion in the Canada-US exhibition game, sometime after scoring a goal. He will not compete in the remainder of the tournament. He is replaced by Paul Martin (New Jersey Devils), an NHL rookie D-man who had an outstanding collegiate career with the NCAA 2002 and 2003 champion University of Minnesota. He also played in the 2001 World Juniors. On a purely whimsical note, it amuses me that there is a hockey player named Paul Martin. That's because I get a mental picture of our suit-wearing Prime Minister (whose name is also Paul Martin) on ice skates with a hockey stick and a shocked expression. Lol! I can just picture that too!

Canada beats USA 3-1 in exhibition. Scorers: Canada - Lecavalier, Sakic, Richards. USA - Drury. Three of the four goalies (Luongo, Theodore, Esche) were sharp on both sides, with the possible exception of Conklin, who was beaten three times through the five-hole. Granted, he had a tough night; two of the goals on the PP, two on odd-man rushes.
Finland over Germany today, 4-2. Goals: Finland - Jokinen (2), Peltonen (2). Germany - Hecht, Schubert. Another injury note: Hal Gill (USA) broke his foot blocking a shot, and he is unavailable for the remainder of the tournament. Team USA is progressively getting younger and less experienced on the blueline - also smaller, with the loss of Gill. He is replaced by Avalanche rookie John-Michael Liles. |
I got to hold the Stanely Cup :D I have a puck that I got after it smashed through the glass from the 84 US Olympic Team. We shall see what ocme's forth in this Olympic event.

Canada vs. US: 2-1 (first official game)
Very exciting game MONTREAL (CP) - Martin St. Louis had a goal and an assist as Canada opened the World Cup of Hockey with a fast-paced 2-1 victory over the United States on Tuesday night in which emotion ran high and goaltenders shone. The game that saw Canada's 38-year-old captain Mario Lemieux go after American Steve Konowalchuk for running goaltender Martin Brodeur also had a player from each side leave with undisclosed injuries - defenceman Ed Jovanovski for Canada and U.S. veteran Mike Modano. Well the final is here.
Canada Vs. Finland Anyone surprised Finland made it to the finals knocking off the US. I am not, Finland as a decent team + 1 very hot goalteander. Here's how Canada and Finland match up in the World Cup final tonight: Should be an exciting final. Here is something funny or sad depending on how you wish to look at it. The quarter-final game between Russia and the U.S., the resumption of that cold war rivalry, drew a 0.4 rating on ESPN2 compared with 2.1 for, ........ poker. Yes, the World Series of Poker, got a better TV rating than this game. [ 09-14-2004, 12:55 PM: Message edited by: pritchke ] |
Gonna see the game soon. I'll fall asleep, and I'm doubtful whether we can do it, but Finland also have nothing to lose.
|
You Americans and your poker!
I'm worried about this. We looked awful against the Czechs. I'm afraid to watch. |
Canada wins 3-2! Yippee! :D
|
Aye, I'm happy. :D

It was a good game and the fins put up a great fight.

Yippee! I saw on the news, at the end of the 2nd that we were tied, and I expected the worst.
