ok heres the deal, got a trojan/adaware on other comp somehow (that mystifies me greatly actually) called ad-binet, but norton couldn't get rid of it for some reason. Now I looked at the Norton page on this file and it said that if it was activated it would change all these registy files, so I checked them all and none were changed, then I manually searched for the files and deleted them.
But now I have a problem, which may or may not be in anyway related. Everytime I connect to the net it works fine for a couple of minutes but then just drops the connection and wants me to reconnect, it will do this over and over. I have also run Spybot V3, and it finds nothing, I would run housecall, and have tried, but I cant get the files downloaded quick enough. So what do I do? I dont even know if these two things are related? Another point to note it that that connection works on this computer, although lately it has been slower than normal. Also, broadband arrives tomorow, BOOST! :D [ 07-29-2004, 06:37 AM: Message edited by: RoSs_bg2_rox ] |
I just had the same problem, did you run the program wizard and shut it off before deleting it? mine was a different trojan though, so not sure about it
|
program wizard?
|
alt-contro-delete, if you are running XP
|
Sounds like it may have dropped in a dialer or something... you might want to make sure you have a current version of SpyBot and Ad Aware, and get a copy of HijackThis as well -- it looks for strange behaviors as opposed to specific spyware.
Check the properties for your network dial-up connections as well. It would really suck if something switched your dial-up to look for a number in Costa Rica.... |
i have roadrunner and its nice but im ruly just posting to change my avatar
|
scuddog, beware of that, it is called spam, and can get you in trouble ;)

I have seen him do it to another guy once, about two or three years ago. The kid lost like 500 posts for being stupid.</font> [ 06-16-2004, 08:19 AM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ] |
thanks Scudgod, that was ehm, really...helpful!
As for the ctrl+alt+del thing, its nothing to do with that. And Im dialing the right number (checked that before, made sure I wasnt paying £1.50 per minute for some stupid porn thing or the like) Not really sure what else it could be. Il shove hijack this on (Il transfer it from this computer, and see what looks strange) |
ok guys, I hate to bring this up again, but its still not fixed, its sucks ass! I've tried a different number and everything!
|
try a different company? :D
|
What did HijackThis have to say about what was on your computer? That may point some things out...
Also, I'd go into your network dialup area, write down the phone numbers, and blow them all away. Then recreate them after rebooting. And consider going into IE (or whatever browser you have) and clicking on the "Restore Defaults" button. If worst comes to worst, you can also reinstall Windows -- take the "Repair Current Installation" option. And failing that, I might find a computer that worked and Google for "Windows timeout for dialup". :D |
well this computer works fine on it. I will be getting broadband in a couple of days, so this wont be an issue. But I still wana get it fixed.
Tried reinstalling, tried different number. Il post the log of Hijack this. |
Ok no need for the logs now, guess what. It suddenly just started working again! Works fine now, kinda strange, but hey, Im not complaining :D
|
Test. Im having trouble posting here. It hasn't worked since friday. I have tried new topics, but now I am trying to post in a topic to see if that works.
|
Right. Its started happening again, and I sent Bungleau the Hijackthis log, we didn't find anything revealing. Also deleted all the Norton stuff manually but still didn't help. But now I think I have come to a new conclusion. Debugging. I think it may be that, as sometimes when on the net debugging comes up and asks you to continue or break, you can't continue so you have to break. Now I don't really know anything much about debugging, but I was speaking to a programmer yesterday who told me that debugging should only be on my computer if I use programming tools such as Visual Studio. Which I don't think I have. So how can I get rid of debugging, because I am quite positive that is the problem?
|
You're using IE, right? Go into Tools, Internet Options and look around. There's a checkbox in there somewhere for the debugger... in the Advanced section, I think. Uncheck it.
|
If you have a trojan, don't count on Norton removing it, unless they supply you with a removal tool. Try an online scan like Trend Micro Housecall and see if it finds anything. Panda also has one, as does Mcafee.
Btw, there's a new virus out that busted Google's servers. If you internet started working again then disappearing it could be that your net is overloaded from traffic by infected computers. |
This might be of help.
|
Bungleau-Yes that's right. Am I supposed to uncheck, disable script debugging? Well I'l try that anyway and see if it works.
WillowIX-I would try that, but I can't! I can't get connected long enough to download the files for running the scan. Mouse-Thanks Il take a look. |
Ok tried the disable script debugging, that didn't work. But Mouse, your link seems to be very helpful, sounds just like the problem I'm having here. Il try out the steps listed and see what I can get done. Thanks very much.

I have also noticed something else a few times about it, the conection only hangs up after a certain amount of bytes has been sent and received, so it stays on for longer, if, like just now, I am only on msn. This connection has lasted for over 20minutes and is still going, so that must surely have some significance.
|
Well if you can't get rid of it, you can always do a reinstall of windows.
Then I'd look into Norton ghost so you wouldn't have to reinstall ever again. Anywho, what OS are you using and what processes are running? Is the OS fully updated? What is your cpu load? Can you ping your ISP's routers when down? (do a tracert to a website of your choice, like tracert www.cnn.com) |
My last post-after posting that I decided to test out the reliablility of my connection when stressed, and it was, as it has been for this whole time, very bad. I got someone to send me a large file on msn, and, my connection dropped after a couple of minutes.
OS=WinXp OS should be fully patched or else nearly fully patched. CPU load as in usage? It varies but gernerally 7-8% as I have 2gb RAM. Processes-there's quite a lot of them, I could host them on an image of them on my site, or I could send them to anybody interested on msn or AIM. But I will tell you that there are 52 (too many too list here). Is that about normal? I currently have media player, this page, and one conversation on msn open, and Norton running. And Getright active and my printer. Also, how can I ping anything if Im disconnected? I don't have a problem with no activity, I just have a problem with getting dropped. |
Ok, did another Norton scan, and it didn't find the two items anymore that your link deals with Mouse. So is there any point in me following that advice?
Well, Im going to try something completely different now, try a different modem that definately works, although Im not convinced that this will work. Il let you know. |
Right, changed the modem, and guess what...It worked! Thanks to every one for all your suggestions and thanks to Lennon for actually suggesting trying another modem. I think what happened is the one in the computer got struck by lightning which caused the microelectronics to duff up in some way so that after a certain amount of bytes had passed through it would just hang up automatically. Job well done.
