It's interesting and amusing that the fantasy races are often based on earthly human cultures.

Obvious ones are:

Trolls - West Indians (Jamaican etc)
Orcs - Mongols
Humans - Anglo-Saxon culture
Dwarves - Scottish (even though you can make a female African American big Momma!)
Undead - "Goth" subculture (have you seen an Undead dance?)
Tauren - Sioux

However, what are the Gnomes? Enid Blyton eat your heart out!
The Night Elves are clearly Australian! ;)

SpiritWarrior 01-09-2007 09:04 AM

I think the Night Elves are like, French or somethin'. The Draeini are German and the Blood Elves I dunno really.

Well the NE female dance is french anyway.

Yorick 01-11-2007 11:12 AM

You know, I'm thinking Chinese culture has influenced the Architecture and city layout of the Elves. The way the buildings are open, they've Anglocised the roofs, but they still maintain their Chinese influence I reckon.

Same with the pools and the meditative ambience. China all the way.

Which is funny if the Orcs are like a Mongol or Tartar horde!!

SpiritWarrior 01-11-2007 12:08 PM

Yeah, there's a certain Zen feel about the NE. I think it is a mix of a few cultures, Chinese, Japanese, French. I can't help but get the feeling there is alot of Italian in the Blood Elf race, not really sure just first impressions.

Yorick 01-12-2007 08:58 AM

But then who are the Gnomes?

Timber Loftis 01-14-2007 05:13 PM

Gah. The only thing "zen" about the night elves is the zen of being a little 10-yr-old legolllasss wannabe. How anyone could play one of those androginous homoerotic MJ wannabes is beyond me. Join the adults, play horde.

Kakero 01-14-2007 10:25 PM

Did someone just been gank?

burnzey boi 01-15-2007 09:19 AM

What i love most is killing Night Elfs.. Just thrills me to kill more and more! :D

Please for the love of god, don't roll a Blood Elf hunter or i shall get the avengeful gnomes onto you! The last thing Horde needs are hunters.

Blood Elf rogues will be 'overpowered' with their racials. Undead stops fear, but BE stops all.

Hardly. Lately I've been running around flagged a lot (pve server). I had a nelf warrior try to gank me on the chain down to MC the other night. The poor guy, I had to kill him. Then I ate him, of course. It was funny, he got first shot of course, then I deathcoil-CoEx-Siphon Life-Corruption- run - set imp to shooting - immolate - shadowburn. He was dead before he got to the island in the middle of the chain. He had 3 friends standing right there. The looked at me, looked at his corpse, and went on their merry way, choosing not to flag pvp against me. LOL.

My hatred of the alliance races, in particular the nelf's stems from the kiddie aesthetic and how much I hate it.... as well as the fact that children really do tend to play the "pretty" races, and I hate children.

But don't worry about me getting ganked. I'm a stone cold murderer, and if I do get killed, then I'm happy for the change of pace. Thanks for your concern, though.

Yorick 01-17-2007 08:51 AM

Aw c'mon Timber. I've played all the races. Love them all I do.

Timber Loftis 01-17-2007 01:18 PM

We actually rerolled on Nathrezim some few months back. Some elaborate plan for friends to level up together. Everyone wanted to play gnomes.

I refused. I will NOT play a race that is nothing better than appetizers.

So, in order to join my pals I rolled a female human mage and actually travelled to meet them in the Gnome starting area.

The adventure ended up ill-fated, I got to level 22, which was about 4 or 5 levels higher than any of them got.

A human female, dranai female, or possibly a nelf female are the only races I could stomach playing on alliance side. Sorry. I just hate the aesthetic.

burnzey boi 01-18-2007 12:26 AM

Blood Elfs are just..

I feel the same way. AFter playing a few characters Horde side, I just can't enjoy any of the alliance races, it just doesnt seem right/cool :D

SpiritWarrior 01-18-2007 09:04 AM

Yeah, it feels like you're committing some horrible atrocity when you roll up an alliance. You quickly dispose of the evidence and vow to never make mention of it to your horde friends.

I play horde out of necessity really. Before WoW, I would mostly choose good aligned characters in my games. But, the state of the alliance side can be so bad that it almost makes you wonder which is good and which is evil. I eventually hated the side so much i didn't want to group with people. When that happens you know you need a change.

Kakero 01-18-2007 10:48 AM

Me on the other hand, I can never stomach myself to play as a horde. I can never forgive what the orcs did in WC1 and WC2. Such a mass genocide they did and I don't ever understand why someone would play such race. This include the races that ally with the orcs. It just feel wrong.

Then again, WOW is the only game where I suddenly felt like being zealously overrighteous. I've no problem exterminating human population/civilization in other games. Don't know why. :D

I like your reasons though because they are RP reasons. It shows you are passionate about the lore to the point where it influences your choices in-game.

SpiritWarrior 01-18-2007 10:57 AM

Oh btw on the original threads subject, the Blood Elves are most definately derived from the Arabian culture. Silvermoon looks like something out of Aladdin. Even the battlemasters are sitting down on those plush cushions!

Timber Loftis 01-18-2007 04:15 PM

Remember that the orcs in WC1 and 2 were slaves to the Burning Crusade, just as the Undead were created by the plague in WC3.

The orcs freed themselves, the forsaken undead broke their mindless bonds.... so they are no longer the minions of others.

The outland lore is getting pretty good. I took word back to Thrall that noncorrupted Orcs had withstood the 5 years in outland and still exist. His very people still survive out there, uncorrupted.

Good stuff.

I think I hate Blood Elves. Timber, they are more Nancyboyish than Night Elves.

Timber Loftis 01-22-2007 06:38 PM

That's why I beat them up and take their hawt wimmen.

They are. But then, the elven race has always been pretty feminine in almost all worlds. They have long hair, fine features, soft skin and a snobishness about them.

The male BE jokes are curious to say the least. Lines such as "Don't you wish you girlfriend was hot like me?" ask more questions than one, lol. Still, I hate Night Elves. They are lanky, horrible mutated versions of elves with their oversized hands and feet, and they look odd doing certain things like wielding swords or walking in stealth. The BE model is cool - somewhat anime, as a blatant attempt to appeal to the younger crowd (who are mostly alliance) in order to even out the ratios and have more people roll horde.

burnzey boi 01-23-2007 07:26 AM

Not playing WC but i thought Horde were actually the good side. Horde do things that help them survive and build a better economy, Alliance are just greedy and take whatever comes in hand to better their humanity.

</font>
Yup, BE is anime-ish alright. You can actually make a BE looks like Sephiroth from FF7. And guess what BE mount is -> Chocobo!! :D

Well.... there are all those quests to spread disease, collect heads, and take the hearts of innocent people. Alliance quests are all "go talk to this guy and get this thing." Horde quests have a lot more of the "go poison this village" and "go kill these people" quests.

</font>
I don't like anime at all personally, nor have I played the FF series but is this mount the same as the one in FF or something? I wondered why everyone was calling them that... in general. I was all "where does it say they are Chocobo?", lol.

</font>
Yes, chocobo is from the FF series. Basically they are oversize chickens which can be tamed and mounted.

Well... Some quest givers have got to have a hobby! And that hobby just so happens to collect heads.

Whats the point in rolling a side where there is barely any differences between the races?

So that Horde might have a chance of doing something good instead of trying to exterminate other races and invading their lands.

SpiritWarrior 01-28-2007 10:45 PM

I remember when I first rolled horde and was asked to posion the pumpkins in Tirisfal, I was all "But I don't want to kill the humans and pretty elves...". My alliance conscience was still there. Now though, since I grew to hate the alliance side i'm more of the "make them burn and die horribly in a sea of their own blood" frame of mind.

Actually i have a problem that every side and class is actually "evil" in that they all have to kill to get ahead. I tried playing a pacifist priest to see how far I could get without killing any life other than picking herbs. I got to level 6 before i gave up. Most of my experience came from discovering places, but eventually it got too tedious. Dying was no problem, because he had no weapons and no armour, but when you can't walk for 1 minute without being killed in the Arathi Highlands it's no fun.

But all the quests have killing! Kill trogs or trolls if you're alliance, and humans and quillboards if you're horde. No matter what class!
