If you have it, give us details, and your honest opinion.
I want to try it, but I cannot afford to waste money on crap. I am saving for Oblivion, and GOD KNOWS Oblivion is gonna be good, it was actually given 5/5 stars by God himself! :D ;) Come on, spill yer guts! (No beta testers please. Final product reviews only) :D |
I have read that the final release is basically identical. The new things people were hoping for to change the nature of the game didn't happen. A few tweaks a few fixes but late beta was DDO as it is now.
|
I didn't try thr beta exactly so that I could get a good vision of the final product. I'd like to get it, the question is, do they have time card? I didn't investigate yet.
|
Yes, they do. I may still get it, for something to play even for the free month..I dunno. I mean, I could probably finish it in a month and I use the term finish because there didn't seem to be anything else to do when you max out.
|
Wish they would offer the game on a demo disk, then you get a free month. That way, no money is wasted. I have a weird feeling DDO is going to be a disaster.
The game mechanics are weird I've heard, and the way the game is played is dumb--many say. And WTF is with Ebberon? lol. If they did Forgotten Realms, and changed the game play, it would have been so much better. Anyone that gets it, spill. |
Yes, it's odd. It's like one of them games that try to be something but don't make it there. I agree FR would have been a winner but honestly Turbine didn't put near enough content into Eberron to even do FR justice. And everything looks jungle...ish and bleak and repetetive.
It isn't a bad game to play but you'd be done with it in a month I'd say. It's like a few good NWN's mods strung together but without real stories. Certainly not worth paying for, trust me. I hate to use the term "fanboi" but I can find no other word to describe the people on the DDO boards. If anyone dares dislike the game they go nuts and start insulting, berating and basically knocking your opinion. I mean, we are all fans of D&D yet they insist on blindly defending a clearly lacking game simply because it carries the D&D logo. In my view carrying that logo makes it even more important to let the Dev's know they didn't get it right and that this is not what we see as D&D. What I want is the system of D&D with the scope and breadth of WoW. I want the endless lands to explore, areas done with the same individuality that Blizzard did the warcraft lands. but set within the Realms. I know some people don't like them but I feel if anyone could bring D&D to life in terms of 'feel' it would be Blizzard, just based on what they have done with their own world. The system of course would take more time but I mean they'd have help from WotC. Ahh to dream . |
Yeah, I see that all the time on forums hosted by the developer. If you don't like it, you're torn up, and flamed. How mature. The truth is that they are arrogant, as well as ignorant. Ignorant of a poor game, and will waste their money on it. The joke's on them.
Man, it would ROCK to walk the trade routes from Luskan all the way to Silverymoon.. And go to Mithral Hall! Dreaming indeed! They have a goldmine in a FR MMO, but suits are too stupid to see it. [ 03-12-2006, 01:31 PM: Message edited by: Ziroc ] |
or perhaps too expensive to get the copyright license to put it in the game.. perhaps? I hear its really different game considering you and your group are actually zoned into your own personal lair where no one will spoil your camps and such..
ive read the review. You can only get up to lvl 10 which is pretty low but realistic. It would be a pure dungeon crawl as well. I cant say much for spellcasters since being lvl 1-10 isnt pretty good for them as they rock at later levels (based from BG exerience ). |
Oh I know the jokes on them and I laugh about it sometimes. That is before I suddenly get frustrated again as I think about them throwing their money at a bad game, in turn reassuring the dev's that they did a great job and giving them no motivation to try harder or rethink anything. Oh well. I feel like this happend with CoH too, this is why I left the game.
I totally agree about FR being a goldmine and I can't believe no-one has done it yet! Instead we get this crappy Eberron which most of us aren't familiar with and less of us even like. The time is right, everything has been tried and tested in the MMO-world, they know what works and what doesn't if they'd just get a develepor that will pay attention to the competition and take a leaf (heck, leaves) from the successful ones books. And if done right, if they really *tried* on this one then my god, the D&D fanbase would flock to this game in force, so much it would rival WoW. Forgotten Realms Online (tm) :D Yes, to dream. |
Perhaps Ironworks should band together and form FR Online? We could make a killing :D

Opinions from a player who played D&D.. THis only shows the negative things he has experienced in the game.

Yeah I'd have to agree with that guy. I had posted a small review of late beta here on the forums, some of you may be interested.

Well, silly me I picked it up before reading this. I installed it and will try it out tonight -- or, erm... the first night I can drag myself away from WoW. I'm not hopeful, and I'm expecting to be disappointed.
Btw, if this game fails me, I will never, ever, ever, ever again buy from Atari. 3 strikes is all any game-maker gets. |

Screw Turbine then, |
Well, okay a fair point for NWN.
But Atari screws things up as a *publisher* IMO. Remember ToEE? I do. I played it like... none. It sucked. And, I had to fight with Atari SecuROM issues just to get it to work. Note that Atari is the big reason this game was underdeveloped, too -- they were pushing it to publication when publication should have been delayed. NWN2 *may* be amazing, but because Atari's publishing it, I ain't gonna hold my breath. Anyway, this is a DDO thread -- and I'll stop hijaking it until I have some comments about the game. Hi, Im back from a long long time away from here.
Anyway, Im reading this post here and I must say Im a bit dissapointed by the poor and rather quick judgement on DDO. I've played european beta for DDO and its one of the better MMO's around for my taste at least. Why? Because its a group play game, where you meet nice folk (well usually) and where you can use the original dnd rules (3.5) It isnt like the endless (and pointless imo) grinds like WoW. The graphics are good, the game is really stable still (you can never tell with MMO's) and its been a good launch for us europeans anyway. The quests arent some pointless non-story kill x of these ect. they are actually well thought about. Ive bought retail and I cant say I regret it, knowing some background information that hasnt reached the web alot for some reason. Atari pushed turbine to release DDO in a to early stage of the game, making it only goto lvl 10. So the lovely power grinders (which shouldnt have any business in this game anyway imho) already reached 10 and started complaining about there being no endgame. Turbine has though, planned alot of content for the months april, may and june already and rumor has it, DDO will already goto lvl 20's in april. Coming back on the point of Atari pushing DDO to release is probably because NWN2 (which Atari is also publishing) is soon ready for release and they dont want both games to be released after eachother. Again like I said before, DDO is so far running very smooth, its instanced so almost no lag, high group-ability, which means pickup groups can sometimes be annoying, but if you get all the good and nice people in (your) a guild, it will be really much fun. Integrated voice-chat is also a really nice addition. Its one of the best release in MMO history as far as Im concerned. My advice to you all, if you think DDO doesnt have enough content yet, wait until may maybe june and see whats it like then. Hopefully Turbine wont fall for the MMO killing PVP crap, they said they wouldnt (for a long while). Oh and the campaign setting is actually a nice thing, something new never hurts. |
Well, I am glad you enjoy it and have found a good game in this one. I would disagree with some things you say but no use in reposting 'em here since I posted my gripes above.
I would veer around here and point out that despite it's faults this game certainly has a target market and I think will draw in a 'niche' group of people. It doesn't feel like an MMO, more like a D&D lanparty, which is I mean, what some people are looking for...that group of buddies you meet after work to play D&D with, locked away in a room or garage. I myself would maybe play it for the free month, I just wouldn't pay for it monthly I don't think. |
Well I tried the first few training missions last night, and it's okay so far. I did have to spend some time moving the bars and menus around to make it look like WoW - but only because that's what I'm used to.
It seems more sensitive to the graphical models than WOW is. In WOW you can be running a good bit away from a mob trying to melee you and still get hit -- DDO seems more sensitive to physical space. (Note: tumbling = fun.) Oh, and you won't be running through any monsters here. Nope, believe it or not it seems this MMO believes that only 2 things can occupy the same space at the same time, how interesting. Game looks good so far. Oh, and don't screw up like me and think 1 gold = 100 silver (WoW) because you're back on the regular D&D system now. Rushing is no option in this game and teamwork is essential. -- Im not trying to convince you to play DDO, its just that these persons always complain and whine on and on and never point out whats good (or give decent feedback on how to actually improve what they think flawed). If you think Im wrong on some point(s), feel free to correct me with some strong arguments that actually give decent feedback. Saying things like, "I could point out what you missed but I cant be bothered to" will leave the right impression (note sarcasm). I mean if you want my view on WoW, feel free to ask (in another thread that is) and I will also add in that I played that game far to long (not just beta (which was ment to have bugs and testphases and server drops ect.) ). Yes NWN was more explorable, you have more freedom there. It started out as a single player game though with multi-player capabilities. Also Im hearing city environments effects actually, people talking, in the tavern you hear voice on the background muttering so to say, you can here the sea when you walk along the harbor, you can hear your footsteps in a different way on wood then on stone, when you hit a skeleton it actually sounds like you hit something like bone (blunt scraping sound), massive stones that are used for doors will actually "grind" open....need I go on? The interface is what it is, its uncustomizable as of yet, maybe it will change due time, its not like wow had a great interface from start (besides I dont have a problem with the current interface (I play at 1200x960 though)). The icons might need some work, but its not game breaking. As for lack of content, see my previous post. As for warforged Im not really into that as well, but its part of the eberon world; I dont mind that they picked something else for a change. |
I like the team aspect but would like to see at least *some* sp content to do when I am bored or don't feel like grouping or can't stay long enough to commit. Even if it was like 2 missions per level that were actually soloable.
Yeah I'd have to say even in beta the servers were stable enough but the mem. leaks were what killed performance at times. The voice chat worked perfect for me, no problems at all. I'd say that there is a severe lack of customization in DDO though. There is/was more in WoW and EQ2 from day one. Certainly shouldn't have to wait and pay monhtly for some to actually be added. Bear in mind in these two games itemization adds a whole new look to your character...it doesn't seem to do this in DDO (think of an Orc and a Human Warrior wearing the same armor set). Many clerics and warriors wearing the same chestpiece look virtually identical in this game. Also, every skin colour seems to be pale or washed, giving your character an undead kind of look. The interface is clunky and kinda awkward but not horrendous and can be improved. The icons aren't game-breaking but add to the sense of bleakness I got (These are spells, where's the magic?). There are environmental sounds but nothing close to what would be justifed in a big city. I mean the only thing outside the dungeons is this city, add some life to it! I found the game to be resource taxing. I tried it on a geforce ti 4600 and a 6600gt and all in all it's a cpu and video hog. They *were* optimizing it still so I can't say for sure but my god it ate up alot at the time. Frames weren't so bad as opposed to texture-caching etc. so maybe they resolved this. |
Well as far as I know, there is no game card, just according to their website "Paybycash.com time card/number" which is really not a time physical card at all, just an indirect paypal option, so I plan to skip this game.
|
I could have sworn I saw it on their site at some point a picture of the little card with the gamebox art on it...maybe I was dreaming. Sorry for the misinfo. as I too can't find it now.
|
yes no gamecard yet, although it says on the game box that they are available.
They havent gotten the gamecard thing done yet. |
This explains it then. That's prolly what I had seen somehwere.

Alright I know I'm completly new to Iron Works but I'd like to throw in my 2 cents here.
If you go into DDO think that it's PnP only Online you are going to hate this game. The things that make PnP fun just aren't nearly as prominent in DDO. You aren't the center of the story here you're more like one of the adventuring groups who sit in the Yawning Portal. (Which I think is why I like this game so much but... yea...) Wizards and Turbine decided to use Eberron cause it is new and Turbine wouldn't have to worry about making sure it followed the what 20 year history of Forgotten Realms? Eberron is also a High Magic low level world which means easier to get magic items and no need to worry about being over shadowed by figures like Monshoon, Elminster, or many others. The lack of gods actuall is another feature that is very nice. The other issue about DDO is it takes place on Xendrix a jungle contient that is the remains of an ancient giant civilization so it should have the overrun jungle feel. Currently the Quests are a bit lacking and some are bugged but nearly all of them have become much much better since beta. The classes feel like they should. I've played fighter and rogue to levels 5 and a cleric to level 9. Let me tell you spell casters even at level 5+ start getting cool they just have to know how to pick spells and when to use them. The selection of feats is very basic but allows you to customize your character a bit but there still is the feal of the cookie cutter you get if you are just using the PHB for a PnP game. Combat is interesting if a bit unbalanced still. Melee is king of combat 100% Magic is second with ranged coming in closly behind. The fact that ranged combat is so slow and magic is just as slow leaves some balancing issues but again is much better since early beta and if you want to actually move magic on the heels of melle play a sorceer with an increased casting speed. Now while there are a lot of changes one thing remains the same between PnP and DDO. It's about who you play with. If you try to just play the game with whoever happens to be in the game you'll quickly get discouraged by the 7337 d00dz who play clerics and refuse to heal the party because they need the heals for them. But then again a PnP game can be ruined by the same type of person. However if you play it with a good group of friends who work together you can find a lot of enjoyment out of the game. People complain about no storylines or anything like that in the game but those people are the ones not reading the quests. The quests are actually really cool and in fact you can run a series of quests for one of the churchs that has you descend in to a crypt to find out why the dead are rising from the crypt. As you head down you find out it was the head of the churches daughter who after you kill tells you she was tortured and killed by here father so she would do it. You go to the head of the church and find out he's actually a wraith. The stories are theer you just have to read. One thing of particular note is the module model Turbine is using. they are coming out with the first next month which has a dungeon you fight through that is actually kinda like an extradimensional vault and you get to fight a Huge-Colossual Red Dragon. The other thing that is really cool is that turbine wants to eventually release a set of module creation tools that players can create modules for the game and submit them for approval and then have them added to the game. Personally from the unity of the Ironworks people if we all picked a server and got DDO we could really have a good time... Especially anyone who likes the Undermountain Mod Ziroc does as really thats what it's all about. Getting your adventuring party together and taking on a dungeon. |
Well, there is a fine point in there -- we should start a thread regarding our server and our character and perhaps start trying to experience this game together.
