AGRHhhhhhh I hate those things. They always get me and kill me! When I tell my guys to CHARGE! To slice their bloody heads in half they use their special power to stun and freeze me right at the spot. I tried shooting long distance but they used their Phonics to stop me. After I'm frozen they get so close to me and hit me bout 3 times then I am dead! The monster I am talking about are the dam filthy BI%%% A##HOle MINDFLAYERS!! We all should get together oneday and lead an army and kill them all. I also hate beholders too. Not as much as Mind Flayers. BAM BAM DIE!!!!!!! But luckily I managed to kill all the flayers in UnderDark and I got to the surface and I am rid of the stench of the flayers.

if you have minsc or if your a barbarian use the "berserk" skill.

Spelca 08-07-2002 05:27 PM

Use some summoned creatures as a shield. Preferably the undead because they're immune to psionics (I think). You can also use the potion of intelligence, which will make you die slower.

Another great tactic is to use the death spell...it kills all Mind Flayers within it's area of effect instantly. I didn't find Mind Flayers so bad after I discovered that trick .

the death spell? never heard of it... where is it found?

Sorcerer Alex 08-07-2002 06:45 PM

The spell 'chaotic commands' is the answer to all your mind-flaying problems, my friends ;)

Death Spell (Necromancy)
Level: 6
Range: Visual sight of caster
Duration: Instant
Casting Time: 6
Area of Effect: 30' radius
Saving Throw: None

When a death spell is cast, it snuffs out the life forces of creatures in the area of effect instantly and irrevocably. Such creatures cannot be raised or resurrected, but an individual slain in this manner might be brought back via a wish. Creatures with more than 8 hit dice are immune to this spell, with the exception of summoned creatures, which are slain automatically. Only enemies are affected by this spell.

Heh, didn't know about "Death Spell", but "Summon Undead" is the real deal, especially once your characters level up high enough that you get the "Greater Undead". Those skulking skeletons are immune to mindflayers and will wade through them like a scythe through a wheat field.

Mordekainen's Sword works very well. None of the Illithid's attacks can harm them, and they are summoned for quite some time.

Newbies! ;) ;)

There are a number of good ways to take down mind flayers without any serious risk.

As Sir Exxon stated, Mordekainen's Sword is excellent. Summon Undead is also excellent if the summoned undead is a skeletal warrior. Simple skeletons will die too easily.

Don't bother summoning elementals. They are really stupid and a single mindflayer psi attack will kill'em.

Keep potions of Genius and/or potions of mind focusing. Both add to your INT, thus "healing" INT damage taken fron mindflayer INT drain attacks.

Mindflayers always seem to umber hulks. Ignore the umber hulks untill all mind flayers have been killed. Keep your summoned allies focused on killing mindflayers.

As Arledrian mentioned, cast the priest spell "chaotic commands" on your 1 or 2 toughest tanks and send them into the melee. Keep your other party members well back initially until the mind flayers are fully engaged by your melee fighters and allies. Then you can sneak them up to provide long range missile and/or magic support fire.

Pay close attention to your melee fighters' INT. If they take INT damage, drink another INT enhancing potion or withdraw from the melee for a short time. INT drains only last for a few rounds.

Another note: Chaotic commands and the potions last for a good long while. So take advantage of this and try to wipe out the entire mindflayer complex all at once. You might need to summon replacement allies.

My favourite tactic is still hasted Skeleton Warriors.

Raznar 08-19-2002 09:33 AM

I found that a few Invisible Stalkers will do the trick nicely, however if you'd prefer not have your party standing idle then Chaotic Commands is the only way.
