Bahamut 11-01-2005 12:26 AM

I purchased GW yesterday... and man oh man I am enjoying it already. :D I am playing a ranger and I was wondering when do I get my pet companion.

And what time do you guys play? I am GMT +8.

Any tips would be appreciated as well ;)

bubbe 11-01-2005 04:41 AM

You get your pet companion in a quest in pre-searing (pre-searing = Ascalon before the charr invasion)

The quests name is The Ranger's Companion and the quest you obtain from Master Ranger Nente in Regent Valley.

I'm GMT+1 and i play pretty often during the day.
I play as Elementalist/necromancer and have finished the game with this character.
I have a level 12 ranger which goal is to get to the dessert part of the game in as low level as possible, and i'm pretty close to do that. Just one mission away and i'm there. :D
Last time i got to the dessert i was level 20. ;)

My name is Bubbe Gubbe ingame (yes i know, very silly name ) so you can contact me if you want.

Bahamut 11-01-2005 05:10 AM

Not silly really

How long's the game RPG-wise?

Can I have more than one animal companion? Hehehe

Right now I am a lvl 5 ranger/elementalist. It's fun! I think the Ranger/Mesmer combo would do better though but I just want to have fun anyway so I picked Elementalist :D

Sure I'll search for you!

Assassin 11-01-2005 08:20 AM

My tips to you: Enjoy the game while it lasts, and don't get run anywhere. Play the game through from mission to mission, and don't listen to those arseholes who say that it's only doable 'one way'. It's fairly easy to do the missions before crystal desert using almost any kind of decent build, as long as you play intelligently.

Unfortunately, I play usually at nighttime, GMT-5h00, so it'll be kind of hard for us to play together.

Quote:

How long's the game RPG-wise?
There are 24 missions in all, each taking about usually a half hour to an hour to complete. That's the 'main storyline' in other RPGs. There are many quests, so don't sweat about levelling your character; it'll level up plenty fine if you just go about the game normally. But there really is no roleplaying in this game that I could find.

Bahamut 11-01-2005 08:37 AM

"While it lasts"? Yikes... I hope that will still last me a long time... (after all i got this game late) :(

Well so far it is interesting :D

Elif Godson 11-01-2005 04:41 PM

I play on and off, no real dedicated to it yet. Have a lvl 7 ele/mo named Kable Cromwell in the pre searing just because I wanted to see it ;) Have a warrior and necro as well around 4ish I think. Look's like th eIW guild is dwindleing though :( if you want in I can invite ya :D

T-D-C 11-01-2005 05:55 PM

Hey welcome to the game!

Ranger Mesmer is a kick ass combo and I have one sitting @ Yaks bend at the moment.

You can have only one Pet at a time.

If you want to join Dave the Quacks and my guild the Shadowsworn PM me in game Whirlwind Axehand. We have a cool cape a few members and a Guild hall.

bubbe 11-02-2005 10:00 AM

And finaly i did it! manage to get to the desert as lvl12 :D

http://surl.se/wjj

And this night I played from 2pm to 6pm in the tombs.
A PvP arena which you reach Hall of Heroes if you are good enough.
You can se a message sometime in the chat
"Team has won a fight in Hall of heroes etc"
I manage to join a kickass team but we never reached Hall of heroes.
I got 17 fame points, had 32 before, now i have 49.

Anyone here want to play the tombs sometimes? msg me ingame.

Bahamut 11-02-2005 10:45 AM

Thanks guys for the warm welcome!

Now, I'll just invite you in-game by typing your character names right?

Yes I want to join your guild T-D-C. I want a cape too! Hehehe that's all. :D

Right now I am on sembreak so I can play pretty much whenever I want so I'll probably see you guys sometime ;)

Please add me guys because I don't know your names besides Bubbbe Gubbe (I'll search you). My character's name is Elyssa Shiftarrow for what it's worth

I will be going online in a few :D Thanks Dave!

T-D-C 11-02-2005 03:07 PM

WOOHOO.

Currently I am bankrolling he guild due to some recently aquired riches. So if you need anything let me know :)

Assassin 11-02-2005 03:48 PM

Does someone here know an eaiser to acquire drok's scar pattern for necros than paying out 40k+? The 200 parchment is killer...

Elif Godson 11-03-2005 10:51 AM

What happened to the IW Guild, is it basically dead in the water then? If so I may be looking to go elsewhere ;) hehe

T-D-C 11-03-2005 02:42 PM

YOu would be welcome in the Shadowsworn..... but we are mainly active in the Aussie hours.

Craft your wood into parchment using the crafter outside Sardelec. Its alot cheaper.

Bozos of Bones 11-03-2005 05:14 PM

About the Parchment, it's 20 gold and 5 wood planks for a piece of parchment outside Sardelac/Ranik/Foothills/Nebo/Whatever other crafter you find. And as a rule, do not sell wood, turn it into parchment before doing so ;)
As for my chars, Bozos Of Bones is a Necro/Mesmer who has finished the game and all quests except for 6, with all necro skills and elites. Very proud of that :D
Second is an Ascended level 20 Mesmer/Monk known as Fella The Mord Sith, currently in a Fastcast Protection mode. Much fun that one is. The third active is Master Of Baator, a level 15 Warrior/Monk, who's main purpose is farming. Those are the chars I play with, but I rarely get the chance to lately, college and all. But the game is, so far, among the best 5 games I have played in my entire life. And that accounts for something, as I have played a whole lot of shyte.
Anyways, if any of you IWers ever get stuck anywhere, and I am online, just give me a whisp and I'll come help. And if anyone needs a few items, I have a few moderately good ones that I have been meaning to get off from my stash char. Most are max, and some are really good. Buzz me if you have any cravings.
And no, I will not run you to anywhere. Ever. And you should never ask for a run to anywhere. Unless you have a stash/sale char, and want to reach LA/Drok's.
P.S.
Anyone have any Bleached Shells?

T-D-C 11-03-2005 07:28 PM

LOL @ the Bleached Shells.

I have the following characters

1. Whirlwind Axehand (W/M) my famer and axe warrior. Is Level 20 and upto Thunderhead Keep. Has a few Warrior elites and is waiting to get to the fireislands to get the rest. Also waiting to get Charge so I can become a guild runner.

2. Caalador Truestrike (R/M) Level 15. Upto Arora Glade Currently speciaises in Degen so uses Poison & mesmer spells. Has a Green Stinger Bow from Sorrows

3. Edric Stormfire (E/mo) Level 14. Upto Lions Arch. Has a Ragos Flame Staff from Sorrows.

4. Torak Deathmaster (N/W) Level 2. Still in presearing. Planning to me a minion master.

PM me ingame if you need a hand with anything.

Assassin 11-03-2005 10:27 PM

Myself:

Ingryl Spellbinder: E/Me20. Just finished the desert, my first character whom I foolishly put in my first Superior Vigor into my starter armor. Ah well. Has a couple of Ele elites and I'm trying to get him outfitted, but I'm enjoying my nerco too much.

Minsc Boohandler: R/Mo20. Finished the game with this character, trying to get a decent build PvE as a Beastmaster. However, I have also dabbled as a R/N (Vamp Touch and Touch of Agony spam with 16 Expertise) and R/W (stance tank). Wielding Dragon's Flatbow and also my farmer.

Thor Topaxai: W/Mo12. Getting dull with this character, so I might delete it soon for a Monk.

Miss Faiel: N/Me6. She's the one I want the scar pattern for, and is probably going to be my most favorite character. I'm going to try out being a Minion Master first, but if I don't like it, then I'm going to switch to Curses/Blood.

Now, without everyone yelling at me for stating the obvious, did you know that you can expert salvage runes out of old armour? Just thought I'd mention it in case you weren't aware.

Oh... those bleached shells. I remember spamming the trade channel in Augery Rock for hours looking for 5 of those damn things for collectors armour. The pain, the pain. They cost a pretty penny, too.

Timbo - GIVE ME THAT STAFF, WANKER. I can't believe you've got it. YOUR ELE HAS NOTHING ON THE OMNIPOTENT DEREK LONGDEATH. You're mum told me to tell you that she said you have to give it to me. So there. Having said that, Derek is up to Thunderhead too, should try to kick that mission off together; I've been in 4 different PUG's that just suck arse at the end of the mission and we end up failing. Bah, will talk to you more about it today... I'm sure I'll see you online :D

Elif - Would you like a guild invite? If so, ask and you shall receive.

Assassin - you sound like an experienced player... we should definately try and organise to be on at the same time. Lotsa fun!

Finally, Bahamut - You're most welcome! Can't wait to start chopping charr with you, lol.

Dave out.

Edit: If Illumina saw this post before I edited it I would be dead right now. Damn spelling.

Bozos of Bones 11-04-2005 07:11 PM

Starter armor can not be sold or salvaged. That's what the main mistake was. At first, when I reached seared Ascalon, I saw the Rune trader, thought "OMG, free level of blood magic!!1!" and applied the rune. hen I pressed ctrl... and realised there's a whole lot better armor not 4 feet away... Was angry at self. And was forced to wear starter until Nolani or somewhere.
As for BS, I need 3 more. So far, I bought 2 for 400 each. And I don't need it for the armor, I want the most beautiful shield I've ever seen (the max +45 -2 stance one, yes).

Assassin 11-04-2005 07:22 PM

Yes, that's my problem. :( Ah well, Minor Vigor still gives +30, and it's not worth the money to try and get that extra 20 HP.

Well, schoolwork has been heavy this past month or so, but it should lighten up relatively soon. The main problem is the time zones; I live in GMT-5h00. You live in GMT+10h00. See the problem? By the time you start playing during the nighttime, it's around midnight for me most likely. Maybe during the vacation, if you guys play during the day, I can join (it'll be during the evening).

You should've gotten it before the SF update. There was a way easier collector that had it before...

T-D-C 11-05-2005 01:19 AM

Well today I got the PERFECT Sheild for my W/M farmer. Malinons Sheild 16 Armour +45 Health (enchanted) -2damage received(enchanted)

I also got a Green necro staff for my necro.

Hope to see you all online!

Assassin 11-05-2005 05:21 PM

For my Necro, should Ï use the wand/cesta combo, or the bone staff? I'll probably lose something like 20% fast recharge, but get to slap on some mods for the staff...

T-D-C 11-05-2005 10:34 PM

There are collectors staffs in the desert that give 20% fast cast 20% fast recharge with 10+ energy.

Check this page for more info.

Assassin 11-05-2005 10:53 PM

Wicked Staff Energy +10
Dark damage: 11-22 9 Curses
Improves Casting speed using Curses skills (Chance: 20%)
Improves skill recharge using Curses skills (Chance: 20%)

Vs

Truncheon
Dark damage: 11-22 9 Curses
Improves skill recharge using Curses skills (Chance: 20%)

+

Idol
Energy +12 9 Curses
Improves Casting speed using Curses skills (Chance: 20%)
Improves skill recharge using Curses skills (Chance: 20%)

What I mean by losing 20% fast recharge is that the idol and truncheon combo gives 36.25% fast recharge and 20% fast cast, while the staff alone only gives 20/20.

Dude, I think you've answered your own question there. Obviously, as the situation stands now, you'd be better off with the two one-handed items. This would change if you came across a better staff.

See, the thing is, staves can be upgraded, wands and idols/storm artifacts/grim cesta's/etc cannot be. When you come across a staff that has three alterations to it (for instance any gold staff... get TDC to show you his Rago's flame staff. He's a prick, he won't give it to me :D ) I would suggest keeping it and making alterations to it that you personally think trumps your wand/idol combo.

For the moment, use the combo and sell the staff.

Sorry if that was a bit rambly, but... meh. I'm not really in a coherent mood

Dave_the_quack 11-06-2005 09:40 AM

Oh, I forgot to say that I'm not entirely sure if the two skill recharges would stack. I'd say they wouldn't, as I'm more pessismistic than optimistic, but again, not sure. Can anyone else confirm? Until then I'd say don't expect the rate of skill recharge to be higher than 20%..

Finally, the two energy is really the only difference between the two of them. So, depending on your aesthetic tastes, you may want to forgo the +2 energy in order to make your character ... er... sexier? Depending on your tastes, of course. Lol. Bah, I'm sure you get what I mean. :D

Bozos of Bones 11-06-2005 01:53 PM

Come, marvel at the sheer perfection of the weapon I possess!
Insightful Cruel Staff of Defense
Damage 11-22 req 9 Blood Magic
Improves Casting speed using Blood Magic skills (Chance: 20%)
Improves skill recharge using Blood Magic skills (Chance: 20%)
Energy +5
Armor +5
Customized for Bozos of Bones.
Ain't that a beauty?
As for the stacking, it doesn't add up, it is calculated one after the other. With two 20% recharge items, you have 36% chance of improved recharge, which is 32% of only one activating, an 4% of both of them activating. And they are cumulative, according to a few of my guildmates.
As for the Staff vs weapon/focus combo, I'd always opt for staff. Finding a perfect staff to further modify is much easier than finding a really perfect weapon and focus. And in the end, the staff has better energy(unless you count the Nolani +5e cesta/truncheon/whatever it is). And the +15e/-1er items are not worth it. Sure, you enter combat with more energy tha an elementalist, but once you drain, that's it. Unless you're a necro with high(10+) Soul Reaping, then it's more manageable.

Dave_the_quack 11-06-2005 03:42 PM

Bozos - I agree with you on the staff matter... but from the two weapon combinations that Assassin gave do you not agree that the wand and idol combo wins because of the +2 energy?

His staff is not one you would want to waste good customisations on; afaik you cannot "add" customisations to an item, just replace existing ones.

Edit: Oh yeah, kickass staff )

T-D-C 11-06-2005 05:18 PM

Just do as I do and use one set in one weapon slot and another in another weapon slot. Switch them as the situation needs. Witness my 4 staff's

Rago's Flame Staff
Energy +10
Fire damage: 11-22 (req. 9 Fire Magic)
Improves Casting speed using Fire Magic skills (Chance 20%)
Improves skill recharge using Fire Magic skills (Chance 20%)
Energy +5
Enchantments last 20% longer

Bortak's Bone Staff
Energy +10
Cold damage: 11-22 (req. 9 Death Magic)
Improves Casting speed using Death Magic skills (Chance 20%)
Improves skill recharge using Death Magic skills(Chance 20%)
Energy +5
Armor +7 (vs. physical attacks)

Morgriff's Staff
Energy +10
Cold damage: 11-22 (req. 9 Death Magic)
Improves Casting speed (Chance 10%)
Improves skill recharge (Chance 10%)
Armor +5
Armor +5

Runar's Brimstone Staff
Energy +10
Lightning damage: 11-22 (req. 9 Air Magic)
Improves Casting Speed using Air Magic (Chance 20%)
Improves Skill Recharge using Air Magic (Chance 20%)
Armor +7 (vs. elemental attacks)
Energy +5

Assassin 11-06-2005 06:09 PM

The two I posted are doable with collecters; they're fairly easy to get. I think I'll just get both...

Bozos of Bones 11-06-2005 06:09 PM

Ah yes... the Morgriff staff... Best weapon a Dark Aura Bomber could want...
I used to have three weapon slots(the staff, two +15/-1 items and an empty slot), but realised that I never use the +15/-1 ones because 11 Soul Reaping gets me out of tight spots every time. But it's not a bad energy-on-demand scheme.
Out of the two there, yes, the truncheon/idol is better. But only until something drops an Insightful +3 mod. Then, all bets are off.
And you can add 2 upgrades on an item. A Staff acceps heads and wrappings. You can't have two wrappings or two heads, but you can have one of each. And I think that isn't a bad staff to upgrade. Sure, Curses will profit from fast cast, but a little less from the recharge, as don't have many spam skills so you can't rely on it. Blood, on the other hand, has plentyful of spam skills, and when fastcast or recharge triggers on one, it will almost always be useful.

bubbe 11-06-2005 07:39 PM

T-D-C, You don't by any chance sell your Runar's Brimstone Staff? or you maybe have an extra staff? ;) been farming for that staff a while now.

T-D-C 11-06-2005 08:38 PM

Sorry no chance in selling that staff. Dave's been pestering me to give him my Rago's staff as well LOL.

The good news is that I have seen that Brimstone staff selling for anywhere between 10-25K in Warcamp.

Or get a collectors air staff and add an insightful head and a armour wrap. (cheaper option)

Dave_the_quack 11-09-2005 10:19 PM

BUT IT WON'T BE GREEEEEEN! *Whinges*

Bah. I need to farm like crazy to get my funds up just so I can have better items than you

Does anyone know if there are green item variations that have blood/hex requirements? *looks at Timbo*

Elif Godson 11-10-2005 09:52 AM

Do y'all happen to use team speak or Ventrilo by chance?

I would normall direct you to this website http://www.guildwiki.org/ but it seems as though its down at the moment. Gives an outline on all the green items and what they do/need.

At the moment we don't use teamspeak as we don't PvP at all. If we go PvP then I would say we could hook something up. Means I need to get a mic though.....

Bozos of Bones 11-11-2005 02:26 AM

In my guild, we frequently use Teamspeak, any time we do PvP, or any of the tougher PvE missions that could use some organisation. Or just for the hell of it. Recently started experimenting with Ventrilo, but there is no server in Croatia or anywhere close, so the lag is bad for us. But from what I gather, Ventrilo tops Teamspeak.
Yes, there are Blood and Curse greens, like the Fleshweaver.

Dave_the_quack 11-11-2005 03:41 AM

Yeah, I've tried to get onto Guildwiki for a while but to no avail. We really should look into teamspeak as well. Although, I'm sure we could always just keep using the phone :oP

Seems to be working thus far, heh.
