I am not trying to bash your current game. If you are having fun with it, by all means play on. All I want to do here is inform others of my experience of this game as compared to the other MMo's I have played (currently on WoW atm) and since you say it is your first MMO I feel you are selling yourself short on this one. Again, if you're lovin' it play on and ignore the rest.
I played CoH for awhile (few months) then got bored. The act of playing a superhero is very fun at first but the game is severely lacking in content. It is a major, major grind in the higher levels. Great engine, but close to 0 content. No looting, crafting, RPing. Every mission is repetitive and non-interactive and it drove me insane after a time. Usually your missions are one of the following 1) Kill x amount of mob on the streets 2) Kill x named mob indoors (usually a named in one of 5 generic indoor instances) 2) Find x object in one of our 5 generic indoor instances and steal/hack/disarm/destroy it (all done by simply clicking on it once and having it vanish). If you have played EQ2 (even eq1), WoW or GW you will not be satisfied with this game overall. The only thing that really serves to distract one from the gaping holes content-wise is the new experience of playing a superhero. Eventually though, you begin to notice. I am however, waiting on CoV but probably gonna wait 'till it is at least 6 months old so NCsoft can at fill it with something other than the barebones they usually release to the public. Edit: Are they charging $27 to play per month now? It used to be 15...If so that is outrageous. [ 07-02-2005, 05:04 AM: Message edited by: SpiritWarrior ] |
$27 dollar for TIME CARDS. Its probably less on a credit card.
I did find some of the missions to be boring, but the community is very cool, as are the costume contests. THE best part of the entire game is......Character Creation. There are so many options availble to make your character unique. There are costume sets for gangsters, egyptians, The Thing-esque creatures, aliens, cyborgs, androids, robots, ANYTHING! You can even have more than one costume, but it costs a hell of alot of influence. One thing I hope for in CoV, is that the interaction with contacts is more than a simple 3 clicks, and boom, new mission. I found that to be very pathetic. I did notice after awhile that mishes were all the same, and all the dungeons looked the same, escpecially offices. While the powers are very cool, and the superhero idea was also very cool, ths game needs a total mission and contact revamping. More interaction, better, less conformist missions, and even an alignment system maybe, with one side anti-hero doing the right thing for the money, or the total good guy. The other thing I liked about this game is the unique money and inventory system. Money is in the form of 'influence' which you get from, you guessed it, killing the bad guys. You can't pick up influence, but it is spread around even in your team, or all to you(if you're soloing). The inventory consists of Inspirations(potions) and Enhancements, which make your powers stronger in some way, by equipping them to a certain power, if they have an enhancement slot. Later in the game, you cannot use some Enhancement because they conflict with the origin of your character. Take Angler, my character, for example. A Level 22 Spines\Regen Mutation Scrapper. He can use a Genome Alteration Enhancement, but cannot use a Relic, such as Nechtinebus's Phylactery. But don't take my word for it, go play the 14 day free trial(includes a 1GB download as well, very unattractive) |
Yeah, the character creator is great fun. The lower levels are where the fun is really. When you hit 50 you have millions of influence and nothing to spend it on except new costumes. You have all you enhancements by 55 and everything SO or special SO.
Cryptic designed CoH like 4 years ago and then re-designed it after 3 years. They had a deadline to meet so released it to the public, unfinished and bare. Statseman admitted this about 2 monmths after release. When I joined the max level was only 40, we had no capes (we got them in an 'update' much later) and there was no end-game at all (there still isn't any). You notice immediately since the NPC's don't even have soundsets like most MMO NPC's do. These guys simply type to you. The other thing is Cryptic is very stingy with their content. I left 7 months ago and in the 7 months only 1 update was released in my absence. I could return and be bored within a week since there is virtually nothing new. I moved on to WoW for that 7 months and in that time 4 updates have been released for Warcraft and I pay the same price to play. Bah, I did have fun with it at the time and I do wish you the best, but do see what is out there before you settle as some of the things on the shelvbes today far surpass this game in how streamlined and polished they are. |
Yes, reaching highs levels become insanley stupid. Cryptic and NCSoft really need to put more time onto this if this is going to be an attractive MMO, instead of relying on the superhero ploy.

I played it and personally, I liked it. It's the most casual friendly mmorpg I know of, considering there are no equipments. You just login and have fun.
The Sidekick/Exemplar system were awesome too. Basically an high level can make you his sidekick, and while you are 30 yards away from him you're considered his level. That way you can play with your friends even if you're just 12 and they are 30. The exemplar is the opposite. The high level player lower himself to your level so that you can do your low level quests together. Greatest idea of any mmorpg, imo. Warcraft should learn from that. Forget about playing together in warcraft if you're more than 5 level appart. Of course the equipment race is usually all there is to mmorpgs so you might tire fast. The monthly fee was something like 12$ US per month, not 27. 27 had to be a two month card. [ 07-03-2005, 02:58 PM: Message edited by: Luvian ] |
yeah only $12.00 per month and you got a 2 month card or somebody saw you comming. :D just kidding

What character do you have Luvian? I'm glad you like it, but it grows kinda boring fast.
|
Katana/Regen scrapper, back before regen scrapper became the class of the month. I picked it up because I hate the downtime in most mmorpgs so I thought they would have less.
I made a couple of other characters, but didn't play them much. I quit when warcraft came out. |
Yes, I remember now. Time cards have 2 months in 'em.
BTW one thing I will always miss: Travel powers :( . Horseys just don't compare to superjump or flight :( . |
I just started playing on Justice a week ago.
My best character so far is a 28 Empathy/Radiation Blast Defender. Server: Justice Name: Silk Fox Class: Defender Origin: Science Primary Powers: Empathy (Healing) Secondary Powers: Radiation Blast Powers: Neutrino Bolt, Cosmic Burst, Healing aura, heal other, absorb pain, resurrect, clear mind, fortitude, recovery aura, teleport, teleport friend, super speed, hasten, stamina, health, hurdle I have a few other characters, but none I've really enjoyed. I'm really looking forward to reaching level 50 so that I can play the epic archetype "Peacebringer" I've already got my costume, name, etc all planned out. :) I'd like to give WoW a shot, no free trials though :-( |
You need a valid credit card number to use the trial anyway. They're not charging you, but they're asking you to enter one.
|
No you dont, I don't use credit cards at all, I didnt have to enter one in.
