Whenever I lean my neck to left or right it starts cracking in it. Is this good or bad? It cracks like when you press your knuckles.
it just probably means you have a stiff neck, I get that alot. but if you are worried about it, go see a doctor ;)
Ah O.K. So this isn`t anything bad then?
no, it just means your neck is trying to pop
Uf I am reliivied. It`s a funny feeling becuase I feel better after it.
yeah, it is norma, because like I said, your neck is stiff..to help with it, try using a heating pad, or hot, wet towel, and lying it across your neck before you go to bed at night
I will ceranitly try that. Thanks Stormy!
Or i can "help" you breake your neck so it feels better LOL.
No worries Xen my sister have the same problem and it is not any dangerous do as Stormy say and it will be okay! [ 07-04-2004, 11:17 AM: Message edited by: Megabot ] |
Well Megabot if you do that then I sure won`t have any problems. I`ll be dead. :D
I do that myself Xen, just means you're a little stiff, although don't go to my extent, I usually do it so much I get headaches
Really? That`s not to good. Well I don`t have that. It just cracks as hell. Thanks all!
Yeah, my neck cracks all the time. Course, one time, after sleeping on this fouton thing, I woke up and cracked it, and couldnt move it afterwards. Stayed that way for 2 weeks, after physical therapy. (Not sure if it was the actually cracking that did it, or the fouton.)

I once slept with my head on the corner of a wall. I looked like I had a mental illness the entire next day, with my head pressed on my chest, facing left.
I have the same thing that Xen has, my neck sometimes just goes *kvrc* but sometimes the whole building can hear me cracking it. |
Not sure what the cause of your condition is, but you should becareful with *cracking* anything joint-wise. There are a lot of nerve bundles and blood-vessels entertwined within your cervical vertebrae (heck all of your vertebrae), and your cervical vertebrae is the only thing separating your brain stem from the rest of your spinal column. It's quite easy to injure yourself (or someone else as taught in martial arts) through certain pressures to the neck/ cervical vertebrae.
Also, we can increase the chances of arthritis in our joints from the conditions and *cracking* your joints makes them worse apparently (sinovial cavity vs fluid stored, etc.) Check your posture and sleeping positions and bed (mattress, pillow, etc.) to make sure it's supportive enough, then check with your doctor to make sure it's nothing more than just a *crick* in the neck. Never hurts to get an educated opinion from your medical professional. |
Your neck will be fine Xen, a good way to stop it from being stiff is to get a wheat bag and heat it up and put it on your neck...or if you don't have a wheat bag...get a peice of material of some sort and put it in the microwave for 1 minute...or however long it takes for it to get hot/warm.
The heat loosens the muscles in your neck, which gives you a feeling of relaxation and causes you neck to cease the cracking. |
I concur, it's nothing to worry about; or if it is, I've got more to worry about than you. *All* my ligaments crack.
It's probably not a great idea to crack it on purpose, though. Like Ehrys, I've also heard that cracking your joints has a correlation with arthritis. (Note: too bad I don't take my own advice ) |
I hope I'm not the only one to immediately crack their own neck after reading Xen's first post...

I can not crack my neck on purpose :/ I try but it never works..my brother once tried to do it for me, thatis the last time he came near me with his hands ;) I am suprised he did not break my neck as hard as he jerked it
If you can't crack your neck on demand, Stormy... count your blessings. My neck sounds like a rifle shot and my back sounds like a machine gun.

I broke my neck some years ago, so I do have some expertise in this field.
Make sure you have a decent mattress and pillow that supports your spine. The majority of neck and back problems can occur from improper sleeping surfaces. Trust me, having a good bed and pillow makes a huge difference. |
And my shoulder sounds like a big limb breaking off a tree...but that's a few too many similes for my taste...so let's go for personification...
"Xen's neck popped itself with astounding severity, and relished the experience" |
I am almost greatful. except that my neck stays stiff, and I can only turn it so far to the right before it starts to hurt :(
Try heat, Stormy. It's worked pretty well for me, and I've had some neck problems (on a bicycle going about 40 kph, sideswiped by a car, header over the handlebars and about 6 somersaults down the road).
You can buy a long, flexible, cylindrical heating pad; mine's called a Bed Buddy (it's warm, but not very friendly, LOL). You put it in the microwave for a couple minutes and put it across your shoulders. Very good for cold wintry weather. Also talk to you doctor about it. There's some approved neck exercises you can do that help strengthen and loosen your neck. I've got full range of motion with no pain, now, and I only had about 5 degrees of left-right movement after my accident. |
tried those things already ;) it is ok, it seems to run in the family :D my mom has had the same neck problems for years, and my father has a bone disease that I seem to have as well
Sorry to hear that. Not much you can do about genetics.
No, Ilander, you're not the only one! And I know what you mean, Aerich, though I've always related my back to an accordion! (Ha, similies, Poo!!)
I can pop my neck, my back, my hands, and my big toes. The only ones anyone can hear are my toes and my neck, though. I popped my neck just after reading the title.
