The last topic on that lord of the rings spoof, crap speak, made me feel old.

It's the new language of the internet? What about the old language? And who consulted us old timers?

I remember the days long before the internet was even an idea. The Vic-20, or the TRS-80. Back then, 3.5KB or RAM was more than anybody would ever need, and a 8" floppy drive or a cassette drive was a luxury. Hard drives that stored a whopping 5MB were only needed by big corporate mainframes. You want to print something, well then you'd better wait the 10mins it took your Dot Matrix printer to finish a page. How about a video card? A what?

And now I wake up and find that there is a whole new language on the internet.

Today, I feel old. Tomorrow, I'll feel older.

But at least I still know how to do long division on paper. :D

Chillax...no one actually talks like that ;) . And if people actually do talk like that, then um...wow, that's totally messed up. I just turned 19 not too long ago, so trust me, people don't talk like that...not really ;)

Gangrell 07-02-2004 09:35 PM

No worries Animal, I know a very small portion of people that talk like that, and when I say that, I mean one person. But now you're making me feel old too. Aye, I remember the early days when I first got me computer, twas over five years ago and lord, how much pestering it took to make my parents get me one. Took so very long, I won't mention how long, but so long just to get a dial up connection running, which we can now do in less than 5 minutes. Where's the challenge? :D

Animal 07-02-2004 09:37 PM

Dial up connection? Huh?

Oh, you must mean the 300baud days of BBS.

Ziroc 07-02-2004 09:44 PM

Ignore it. I do.

Anytime I see anyone typing like that, I automatically ignore it and move on...
It's silly, noobish stuff.

Before I ran this website, I ran a BBS for 4 years using WWIV. It was also called The Great Escape (TGE for short). Even back then, I had a RPG message board and ran EscapeNET (a WWIV Network). Fun days indeed!

I was the first board with a USR 14.4 Modem!

Aye, and those days were hard too. Even the computer literate people and the guys that ran computer shops couldn't help us figure out how to connect to the internet. That was a hard six months, let me tell you.

Animal 07-02-2004 09:53 PM

Zork anyone?

You had to tell your modem what number to dial for the specific BBS you wanted to connect to.

Hmmm, well, my mind is a bit fuzzy on that area because my dad did handle most of it. I'll have to check with him.

And think in 30 years what technology will be like:

"You mean they actually had to use *wires* back then?!"

I was born before internal hard drives were invented...but really didn't have a computer before the ten GB hard dirve was invented, or the 500 MHz processor came out...

I can do long division, however. And Calculus. Without a computer.

IN YO FACE OLDIES!! j/k! lol

Ladyzekke 07-02-2004 11:20 PM

Zork was cool, I loved wandering through the Crystal Grotto...........

Dron_Cah 07-03-2004 01:43 AM

I didnt become a "computer-savy" person, until a few years back. by then, the whole internet things was already around.

Stormymystic 07-03-2004 01:54 AM

you only feel old because you are old

Jorath Calar 07-03-2004 02:55 AM

My first computer was a Commodore 64 with a tape player... man you needed patience back then... it was acctually pretty good because you could read a book, even do your homework, while the games were loading

I didn't hear about the Internet until 1994, and I didn't fully understand the concept until about year later...

Oh and if I see someone write like that "Leet" crap I ignore it, just shake my head and hope they will be run over by a car...

wellard 07-03-2004 03:49 AM

Those mines were scary!

Anyone remember Wishbringer? it was another infocom game.

Paladin2000 07-03-2004 02:51 PM

Talk about old! My very first PC was a custom built 22MHz 286 PC with 2 MB RAM (or was it 1 MB?) and a 40 MB seagate HDD. The damn HDD would produce the irritating scratching sound whenever it is doing some reading and writing.

Oh, since soundcard was very much "optional" those days, I played games on PC speaker or with no sound.

Sagramore 07-03-2004 02:52 PM

my first computer ever, and i guess this isn't that old but it makes me feel nostalgic, was when I was in 3rd grade we got a computer fro mmy school that would play number-munchers on floppydisk....and that was it...I'm glad to see how far we've progressed from that :D

Animal 07-03-2004 03:56 PM

My first computer, was the good 'ol Vic-20.

How about a 1.02 MHZ processer, 3.5KB of memory, tape drive, and an incredible 22X23 resolution! :D

Animal 07-03-2004 04:18 PM

For those who have never experienced Zork, here's a link with an available download.

Stormymystic 07-03-2004 04:28 PM
