Ok. I'm just curious as to what people's voices sound like. Alot of people here on IW have very diverse backgrounds. Some move from place to place, others are born and bred in their home region. So, what accents have you picked up in your travels?
Do you have a Southern US accent coupled with a twinge of nasal Californian drone? Does your voice have a distinctly central-European linguistic flavour, with undertones of Scouser English? Personally, I'm a kiwi through and through. Complete with elongated a sounds ('maaaate'), rolled-R's and dulled pronounciation. For example: "That rrradio show is orsome (awesome) maaaate". So anyways, if you feel you can describe what your accent sounds like in words, then by all means contribute to the enlightenment of the forum and let us all know... Cheers. Have you ever watched Wallace and Grommit?
I sound JUST like Wallace. A very stong Lancashire accent or a very strong Aussie accent when I try ;) |
Horrible.

Wellard :ok, now I can picture the sound of your voice perfectly! Cheers man
Mel : I think Dutch accents (assuming that is what you actually have) are some of the most beautiful in the world. Along with French and Italian. They have that flowing rich sound that seems to come from centuries of civilised culture ;) ...ok, so all the Dutch people (read females) I've met have been really sexy, you can't blame me for making a mental connection here |
What accent??
|
I can mimick just about any accent I what. Some weird talent I have.
As far as my own....I dont have an accent. |
You've heard my accent I might have been slurring a bit at the time though.
But for those who haven't met me: My accent vacillates between Emma Thompson and Pat Butcher depending on how drunk I am :D I can't think of anyone on telly who speaks like me. It's not BBC English, it's not Cockney - sort of somewhere in between with a slight almost imperceptible West Country-ish touch on certain vowels. |

Depends if I'm talking to mates or at an interview. I can talk proper BBC english (well if I try really hard :D ) but most of the time it's a southern england accent i.e. no t's or g's at end of words, no h's at start of words.
Mate is pronounced mae. What is pronounced wha. Him and her are pronounced im and er except at the start of a sentence. Something is pronounced either summin or somethin depending on mood. Also I tend to avoid the use of the word "are" unless it's really necessary. E.g. I'd say "where you goin?" not "where are you going?" etc. Great isn't it? :D Makes me sound really uneducated but it lulls people into a false sense of superiority which can be greatly exploited i.e. made fun of later ;) :D If I think of any more distinct characteristics I'll post here. Aaron, I actually agree with Groj - Dutch accents are pretty awful.... |

Anyway, someone sort out a bloody voicechat and we'll all "meet up" and test out these accents! :D Serious, anyone know a good free voice-chat service? Yahoo used to do them...

I've a better idea. Let's do that Panda meet - you fly over here and all the IW Dutchies will buy you a beer. :D

I sound like Grace from Will & Grace. Not a very pronounced New York accent, but you can still tell I'm from around here.
|
I have a basic Midwestern US accent, the kind you hear on the US National news shows. Not far enough south to get that southern twang going, although I do employ it when I want to be more likable.
Like LK, I can do a variety of accents. The tally one drink-soaked evening was around twenty-five different voices I can use and carry conversations in. I've passed myself off as Australian and Irish before, and I can do a convincing Frenchman or German speaking English. Except to someone who natively speaks that way, however; I'm basically good enough to fool people who don't know any better |
Rude mostly. :D
|
I generally have a Kadazan Baku accent as I've spent quite some time in Malaysia before. At that time I studied in Chinese school and picked up some of those infamous chinese accent. Which had really annoyed my japanese tutor. She can't stand them. LOL. ;)
However, since I've been to many Asian countries I can easily mask my accent. In China I can speak perfect " Potunghua " and the people there was so suprise that they wouldn't let me go. Same happen to me when I was in Singapore, they all thought I was local. :D |
When speaking English, I have the same accent very many other Estonians do: Bland, emotionless. Estonians have this nifty way of speaking English without expressing much emotion at all. That is maybe so because of what the Estonian language is like - We spell everything exactly how it's written, with very few exceptions. For instance, if I were to write the pronounciation of the word 'Cat' in Estonian, then it would be 'Khätt,' 'Mouse' would be 'Mäuss' and 'Angel' would be 'Eindžel.'
You can pronounce every word more-or-less correctly in the most common, usual way to say them, and still have this accent. |
moine uz choiwce bro

Well, I've lived in Dublin all my life so I have a strong Dublin accent.
Just think Colin Farrell. (Except I'm better looking, of course.) :D ;) |
I have a neutralized London accent - you can hear I'm from the south of England but that's about it. I sound kind of like one of those BBC newsreaders
And Hierophant, who're you trying to kid? Dutch accent nice? Ai haaite it man, it shounds crep laaike dis! |

Since my dad is english I have a pretty generic british accent although I would not be able to place it. Probably Central-England. I can also imitate irish (because I studied there) and american accents (nearly everyone can imitate american since you hear it a lot).

Last time I ever say kiwis have sexy accents! It's all your fault! :D |
I have an Australian accent, though not a really broad one like rural folks (and actors who want to seem really ocker on Home and Away :D ). Not as broad as Paul Hogan, for instance, but similar.

Become a memeber of TSR, many Iron Workers are,
http://www.the-silver-river.com/Forum/index.php And they have a voice chat every month. It would be cool to have one on IW. though there are to many members maybe? |
I pretty much second everything said by my fellow Dutchies here. We have horrible accents. Possibly the worst in Western Europe.

I would say my accent is well spoken English, which is quite strange for a person to have where I live, everyone here talks like the cast from Eastenders :D But I do on the off occasion when i'm talking with friends use cockney slang i.e 'Score' (£10) and 'Minces' (Mince Pies - Eyes) etc.
|
No accent at all. Just regular American, except for now and then when I've been around my relatives too much, then a word here and there may sound redneck. I get over it quickly though. :D
|
Because I've moved around in the US a lot, my accent is basically unidentifiable (neutered)American, with a smidgen of southern US still discernible.

Me? I don't have an accent. Everyone else does. :D
Much like some others here I can pass some fairly convincing accents though. What can I say. I was born in Pennsylvania, moved to New York, then moved to Florida where I've lived most of my life. I don't have a clue what kind of accent could amount from all that. I know most of my relatives up in PA sound slightly Canadian, or maybe its a hint of Pennsylavania Dutch? But as for me? Not a single accent I can place. [ 02-25-2004, 01:06 AM: Message edited by: Firestormalpha ] |
