The rules:

-You choose a rather well known person. This can be anyone. From Plato to Madonna.
-You post one or two of the most famous quotes of this person.
-The first person who manages to guess who you had in mind, gets the post the next set of quotes.
-No posting before you have had confirmation that your answer is indeed the right one.

Here is the first series of quotes:

"One should always play fairly when one has the winning cards."

"I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability."

Should be easy enough. Good luck

WillowIX 02-23-2004 12:42 PM

I'd have to say Oscar Wilde.

Dreamer128 02-23-2004 01:35 PM

I'd have to say you're right

WillowIX 02-23-2004 01:42 PM

Ok then I get to go correct?

"Nothing will come of nothing. Speak again."

To make this a tiny bit harder I want the name of the character saying this line. Shouldn't be too hard.

Bungleau 02-23-2004 01:50 PM

Would that be King Lear, in the play of the same name?

It would indeed. Your turn to go Bungelau.

Melusine 02-23-2004 03:02 PM

Damn, I knew all of them, just saw the thread too late. Nice idea, anyway, Dreamer!

Bungleau 02-23-2004 05:10 PM

Okay, how about this one:

I never make stupid mistakes. Only very, very clever ones.

Pirengle 02-24-2004 01:21 AM

Hey, something else I know. 'Tis John Peel, who also said "I've obviously offended lots of people. Let's move on!"

Bungleau 02-24-2004 09:32 AM

I'll give you that. John Peel put those words in the mouth of the Doctor, in Timewyrm: Genesis.

Your go!

Pirengle 02-25-2004 09:45 PM

Hmm. A quote.

"If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done."

Dreamer128 02-26-2004 09:13 AM

Heh.. good one. Don't know who it's from, though

harleyquinn 02-26-2004 01:52 PM

Peter Ustinov

Pirengle 02-26-2004 04:03 PM

Congrats, Harleyquinn! Your turn.

harleyquinn 02-26-2004 08:17 PM

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Pirengle 02-28-2004 04:23 AM

Will Rogers?

harleyquinn 02-28-2004 08:48 AM

Nope

Here's another quote by the same person:

Why is it, "A penny for your thoughts," but, "you have to put your two cents in?" Somebody's making a penny.

InjaYew 02-28-2004 09:56 AM

Steven Wright?

harleyquinn 02-29-2004 12:54 AM

Yup, you got it, InjaYew. Your turn

InjaYew 03-01-2004 08:04 AM

"You may say a cat uses good grammar. Well, a cat does -- but you let a cat get excited once; you let a cat get to pulling fur with another cat on a shed, nights, and you'll hear grammar that will give you the lockjaw. Ignorant people think it's the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggravating, but it ain't so; it's the sickening grammar they use."

InjaYew 03-01-2004 09:04 PM

Too hard huh?

Here's another'n'...

"But who prays for Satan? Who in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most, our one fellow and brother who most needed a friend yet had not a single one, the one sinner among us all who had the highest and clearest right to every Christian's daily and nightly prayers, for the plain and unassailable reason that his was the first and greatest need, he being among sinners the supremest?"

Bungleau 03-01-2004 11:15 PM

That would be Sammy... Sammy Clemens.

InjaYew 03-02-2004 05:29 PM

Yay!

Yer turn.

(Sorry it took so long to reply. I've been having connect\time out issues again.)

Bungleau 03-02-2004 10:42 PM

Okay, try this:

"I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."

*edit* for those who missed it, Sammy Clemens is better known as Samuel Longhorne Clemens, or by his stage name, Mark Twain. */edit*

Seraph 03-02-2004 10:49 PM

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Bungleau 03-03-2004 12:17 AM

Wow! That lasted a whopping... seven minutes. Okay, Seraph... your go.

Seraph 03-03-2004 01:47 AM

Well, I felt this was somewhat appropriate.
Who said "I never said most of the things I said."

Skippy1 03-03-2004 06:31 AM

Got to be George W! Sounds exactly like something he'd say! :D

Hang on a minute! Just had a brain explosion! Could it be Donald"I take lessons from GW"Rumsfeld??

WillowIX 03-03-2004 06:48 AM

Well my guess would be Yogi Berra. But I have to agree with Skippy as well.

Seraph 03-03-2004 05:38 PM

You should go with your guess Willow.

Other great Yogi-isms (That I considered) include:
"I usually take a two hour nap from one to four"
and
"A nickel isn't worth a dime today."

Does that mean it's my turn to go? I have to come up sith something good so I'll await your consent.

Seraph 03-04-2004 06:15 PM

Yes it's your turn to go. I guess I should have specificly said that.

Ok then.

I am become death; the shatterer of worlds.

A 10 point bonus to anyone who can name the real origin, but I'm looking for the more famous man who said this.

Ilander 03-05-2004 10:15 AM

Just as a side note, Xzar in baldur's Gate says that...but since I cheated to get the answer on this one...I'll leave it to someone else...though that quote rocks!

Bungleau 03-05-2004 12:36 PM

Hmmm... Willow, it sounds like the words of the Hindu god Siva (or Shiva) the Destroyer. I'm familiar with it from the Destroyer novel series, which I have read for nearly two decades now (sheesh!).

Somebody famous actually said that? I've only heard Remo Williams say it (or Siva inhabiting Remo's body)...

Yes he is actually very (in)famous. ;) Think inventor. ;) After completing a project these words were uttered.

And you wouldn't be wrong. ;) Your turn Injayew.

InjaYew 03-07-2004 11:55 AM

"In heaven all the interesting people are missing."

InjaYew 03-07-2004 10:24 PM

"Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."
