Hey, I was wondering...if I want 32 bit color, and my pc claims it only has 24, how to I persuade it otherwise? Buy a new monitor? Buy a new video card? Download a driver?

thanks for help...and btw, the problem is only an issue because I can't deprive myself of crpg's

1. Check your video cards specification. Does it support 32 bit colors?

2. If it does, download the lastest driver directly from the manufacturer's web site.

I have integrated graphics, p2k!

Paladin2000 01-17-2004 11:52 AM

Go to your motherboard's web site. Search for the model of your motherboard, there should be something about the integrated graphic card.

Most of them built in video cards should be capable of generating 32 bit colors but some older ones may not.

Integrated graphics are crap but it does tend to depend on your driver.

Also about the topic title "32 bit colour blues" ...yes there are quite a few possible shades of blue possible with 32-bit colour :D and shades of other colours too :D *groan*

Yeah, guys, when I'm back at MY computer, and I try that, I'll try to give an update...thanks for now...

Stupid Intel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anywhoo, now that I've had my rant, I have to say that my integrated graphics does NOT support 32 bit color (or colour, for the rest of you). I think I'm going to have to get a darn graphics card, though I need one both compatible with my computer and Elder Scrolls III...gosh, I hate Intel!

Thanks for your help, IWers!

You don't need to spend an arm and a leg... for less than $80.00 you can get a Geforce 4 TI 4200 with 64 meg... that'll give you all the resolution and bit depth you'll need.

Funny that you mentioned bit depth. I need a card with 48bpp (or preferably 64bpp), spent a couple hours yesterday looking, there's nothing out there yet.

What do you need that bit depth for? The human eye can't perieve 2^32 colours, even if you could get a monitor to display it.

Ilander, make sure your motherboard has an AGP slot before you go and buy your new card, if it dosent you will need to find a PCI version.

I'm using a number of 16 bit per channel input devices (both 16 bit grayscale and 48-bit color), and dropping those images back to 8 bit per channel for viewing loses a lot of data, some areas of an image might have significant information that is being "lost in translation" when I give up those 8 bits. The human eye is indeed capable of seeing more than 256 shades of a color, and it is especially sensitive to edges. Open up photoshop and create two squares, one of grayscale value 128, one of 129. Seperate them on a white background and try to decide which is darker... you can't. Next place them so they're touching eachother, now you will easily be able to determine which is the darker by comparing them relative to eachother right at the interface point.

Photoshop is now capable of working on 16 bit per channel images, I'd like an output device that can display it also, although admittedly those sorts of bit depths are of limited use.

(does happy dance)SINGS: It worked, it worked, I can finnally play Morrowind! It worked, it worked, and now my 700Mhz computer outperforms a graphics-cardless 2.3Ghz!

And yes, I know my song didn't rhyme, but that's okay, because I'm a happy camper...

LordKathen 02-03-2004 03:43 PM

I had to install a Gforce 2 with 32bit true color, so I could play Morrowind myself.
