Does anybody here know where I could find copies of some Japanese Anime? Specifically 'Street fighter' and 'Macross'. I am intrested in the Japanese versions with English subtitles---is it just me or do the the American voice actors always make the characters sound like pansies?
|
yeah well voice acting should not be allowed except for in cartoons for VERY small children, once you have seen simpsons dubbed to german, you underestand what i mean...

you can check www.jlist.com ; this site has all kinds of stuff from japan. be warned though, it does have some 'adult' items, though.

However, there are some where the dubbing has been excellent, Tenchi Muyo being a classic example. I like Natsuki Anime for mine. Though he's mainly UK based, he does export ot other countries... |
Thanks slicer and cav---i appreciate the sites. You guys have any reccomendations for good anime. My preference is sci-fi, but I'll check out anything good. Don't like things that are 'too' weird though. A little bit is ok.

the best way to go is to get DVDs, that way you can change the language and subtitles and mix and match
If you want a good anime that I recomend: Fooley Cooley is the best anime of all time. StreetFighter Alpha The Movie is here. The Whole Macross Series is here. Macross Plus DVDs are here Read Or Die Is another REALLY really good recomendition of mine, as is Photon. Oh yeah and one final recomendation: If you want to watch an anime about watching anime then this anime is worth watching! |
and lets not forget my own personal Anime Reviews!

HEY ANOTHER ANIME LOVER!!!!!
you can probably get em off e bay or just import from japan like I do. |
I friggin' hate the dubbing the Dutchies tend to do here. A Dutch version of the Lion King? Come on. Kids should learn English anyway: I will NEVER EVER buy dubbed video's for my children.

I wish I could help the PAL-format people. Would be so much easier if the world ran on the same current...
Pikachu, you might also want to try retail and conventions for anime. Suncoast is a good place to find popular subtitled works. As for conventions, here is a decent list of anime conventions around the world. There's one called NekoCon during the second weekend of November, and it's hosted in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm going. ;) Dealer's rooms at conventions carry a lot of rare and hard-to-find anime, and most of it is subtitled. Dubs stink. Anyone ever see the Escaflowne dub? Dilandau will never be the same. I prefer subtitles with anime, movies, tv shows, basically any visual media. (They made a dub from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon! YUCK!) /)eathKiller: what is up with FLCL?! Seems like my hallmates love it, and I hate it. Read or Die is a nice series, but awful short--they're trying to get me to cosplay somebody from it for NekoCon. Still deciding. As for sci-fi, if you can handle Ghost in the Shell, I suggest you try it. It's a movie, it's sci-fi/horror, and it's rated R (17 and older). Or you can go with the granddaddy of all sci-fi shock anime, Akira. This one WILL give you nightmares. The original Gundam Wing is a decent series. I don't know much about sci-fi series--tastes around here tend to stay in shoujou. |
