Why do I say this? It's a long story, so stick with me (and don't laugh at me).
I write fanfiction. I've said it and I'm not ashamed of it; I have no life because I have no money, and I have no money because I have no life . On monday, I found four juicy flames in my inbox from little kids who were annoyed that I told them that spellchecking and paragraphing were not optional, etc. One of them said this... "I SWEAR IF YOU DON'T APOLOGIZE TO HER AND TO ANYONE ELSE ON THIS SITE YOU HAVE INSULTED I WILL HACK INTO THIS SYSTEM AND SEND YOU A GLITCHED EMAIL THAT WILL CRASH AND DECOMPOSE YOUR COMPUTER'S DATABASE. IF YOUR FATHER HELPED CRACK THE JAPANESE CODE FOR THE MILITARY IN THE GULF WAR, THEN YOU WOULDN'T DOUBT ME." *Sporfle* First thing first: We were fighting the Japanese in the Gulf? Damn, that's the second best secret of the entire thing! Second: my computer will decompose? Yeah, if it was made of elephant dung or something  . Third: Cracking codes is nothing like hacking computers, especially as the "Japanese" code that his father helped crack was basically Japanese with a few odd symbols thrown in. Nevertheless, it's the Japanese quote which makes me think that Canada doesn't teach history anymore. |

They got me there too...... :D But, you can't blame little kids for getting everything wrong. They were probably so exicted that they could finally 'out' there frustrations at someone, that they started to be a little too imaginative! :D </font> |
Well, look on the bright side, at least he knew there was a war.

Welcome to Ironworks, Pikachu_PM! You're from the Outer Banks? How are things since Hurricane Isabel hit last month?

Yeah, my house held up just fine. I live in Kill Devil Hills...Hatteras got ****'d up pretty bad. Only thing that is annoying is that I work at a development selling houses (Where I am now in fact) and we haven't been very busy since the hurricane. Wouldn't be too big a deal, but I just graduated college and the sudden slow down is making me nervous.

People who get annoyed by writers pointing out you need to use some form of punctuation and grammar are the exact people you would expect to find looking to fight Japanese in the Arabian peninsula.

Kaltia it sounds to me like this kid has his grandfathers story telling abilities. I could have sworn it was Iraq in the Gulf War myself, but then again I only barely passed my history classes.

That's a good one, Kaltia! Decomposed...well, I suppose they might mean your pc will start UN-writing all your fan fics. *snicker* But it really is a funny email, Kat!
Did you answer? I can just see the look on the kid's face when you inquire if his/her computer has 'decomposed' lately and what is it made of.....and do be sure and ask if the Japanese government knows they were working codes in the Gulf! |

"Sir! We've cracked the Japanese code!" "But we're not fighting the Japanese! What did it say anyway?" ""We have ten thousand Sega Megadrives ready for exportation to the United States", Sir!" |
Um is there some kind of double posting issue going on here, or is my vision just getting that bad?

The trouble kids & computers get up to in Canada is documented in this site:
http://www.actsofgord.com/Propaganda/chapter02.html Its possible the funniest/sickest site (rated PG) that I have ever seen. Please read Book 1 of the Acts of Gord and you'll be hooked. (I always imagined him as a very young & strong John Cleese...) |
Do they teach you to make broad sweeping generalizations in the UK?

Seriously, though, Djinn, I've met enough Canadians to know that the kid in question is in a tiny minority. I just wondered if the teaching idea of "Don't correct the likkle didums, they need encouragement and you'll crush their ikkle souls" was alive in Canada too. Hope not. They banned the Red Pen of Markingness! |
I may be waaaay to new here to comment in such a thread of titans (5000 posts!), but as a Canadian, I can say we learn all about history. Ask any Canadian to recount the War of 1812, and they will all know about burning down the White House ;)

oh and welcome to Ironworks! |

So...tell me about the burning of the White House, then |

Well, i do not know what you have in canada, but in israel history lessons sucks.
The ww3 (!) was won by americans all alone (!!), stalin was an idiot and sat in syberia (!!!) for al the time when hitler was in moscow (!!!!). This is how ww2 is been taught. That is the level of teaching. heavens! if it was not for russian jews in israel and a few decent teachers we all would have been with such marvellous education. But In russia it is even better. Listen to these pearls: Michail sergeevich lenin-the last prime minister. Ivan the terible-what is that? The ww2 began in....trrrrrrrrrr.... 9.5.1941, Tada, tada, tadaaaaa I heard that most of the usa residents do not remember all the states by name. is it true? It seems that the education falls everywhere to the 9 hells. |
Actually the term most would be inaccurate Baron. I would agree that there are many though. Even I would take some time to remember every single state. Now if you look for US citizens who know all the states and their respective capitols (or was it capitals; I can never remember that) that's a whole other story. But anyways, the US is the pits when it comes to education among the major powerhouse nations. Japan, England, all of them are typically seen as better off educationally than the americas.
|
Japanese? I thought it was Brazil? Hmm guess my history teacher was waaaay off! :D Anywho Kat, I think the error is not so much education as age. ;) I know Jaquie hasn't started taking proper history lessons yet but she's only eight. Ask me in 5 years.

There are no Japanese in the gulf ?
