My mum heard on the radio the other day that you're not supposed to reuse bottled water bottles more than a couple of times because they have carcinogens or some other undesirable substance on the inside, which is unsafe. Does anyone know if that's true?

Gangrell 09-21-2003 06:20 PM

Doesn't sound like it is, otherwise you would consume these substances the first time I would think, not three times later

Bozos of Bones 09-21-2003 06:23 PM

carcinogens in glass? Really.
They just want more money.
Don't ask how, it's just that.

Jorath Calar 09-21-2003 06:38 PM

Just do what I do... Drink from the Faucet... no wait you are not in Iceland...

Best thing about living here really...

Bozos of Bones 09-21-2003 06:40 PM

Yeah! Let's make fun of all the people who have to buy water to drink it!
Those poor little slobs.

No they're plastic bottles.

Really we have two bottles in the fridge to keep tap water cool. They are old 2 litre fruit juice containers which we change every month or two. I know they (plastic bottles) get brittle and loose clarity after a while so yes there must be some changes, probably from UV rays. Anymore info Aelia Jusa?

No :( . My mum just heard it on the radio - dunno if it was a news item or just something the presenter mentioned. I take a water bottle to uni that I've refilled every day because they're a nice size. Am hoping it's just an urban myth, like using a mobile at petrol stations ;)

Gangrell 09-21-2003 07:21 PM

I'm pretty sure it's a myth Aelia, otherwise they wouldn't have sold them to begin with

Vaskez 09-21-2003 07:29 PM

I SERIOUSLY wouldn't worry about it. They're finding 2 extra reasons for us to worry about our health every day. I mean apparently all fried food is carcinogenic too - I still eat a damn lot of it :D
My mum also mentioned today that people who spend too much time in front of monitors, especially CRTs are statisticly less fertile. Am I gonna worry about this? No. You could easily spend your life worrying about everything they say is a health risk and your whole life will go by and you'll realise all you've done is worry instead of enjoying life.
Anyway, yeah I just drink straight from the tap too, anywhere in Europe at least.

Oh of course. No company has ever inadvertantly (of advertantly ;) ) sold anything potentially harmful  . Sorry. Looking for reassurance a little more along the lines of 'no, plastic cannot emit carcinogens or other harmful substances because of this and this scientific explanation'. Not 'no it's not true because it sounds unlikely'.

Well I wouldn't say I'm worried about it. But since I do prefer to be as healthy as possible, I'd just like to know so I can buy a proper water bottle. You might eat a lot of fried food but I don't

You really don't wanna drink from the tap in Spain, that water is so filthy, you don't even wanna take a shower there.

Kakero 09-21-2003 07:52 PM

well, no matter where I am I don't drink straight from the tap. I boil it first before I drink it.

johnny 09-21-2003 07:54 PM

Don't you burn your mouth then ? :D

LOLOL :D . I just love really obvious humour like that ;)

Yeah I drink from the tap too, though not everywhere (ie not in parks where drunk (or not  ) people piss on the faucet ). There aren't always taps around though, plus it's convenient to be in a lecture and be able to just have some water in my seat.

Gangrell 09-21-2003 08:16 PM

I drink from the tap in only one place, my house where I know where the faucet has been

I'm aware of the painfully obvious use of dangerous products by other companies, what I was saying was I doubt reusing a plastic bottle is going to end up killing or seriously harming you in the end.

shadowhound 09-21-2003 08:22 PM

I hope it's not true, I have been re-using a bottle for a while now...

Is that to cover up that you have an incontinence problem?

I would not be to sure that using mobiles can cause a hazard during refueling is just an urban myth. However Static electricity and explosions at petrol stations is a definite risk so be carefull out there

Intrepid 09-22-2003 01:56 AM

yeah but even if it were carcinogenic I doubt it would be in strong enough ammounts to do anything. Also it would depend on the type of plastic so i guess it's just luck what type of bottle you use.

Hayashi 09-22-2003 02:05 AM

We heard it too (rather, my wife) over here in this part of thw world.

To put it into context, what I think was meant iirc is that repeated washing or scrubbing would do something or other (I really don't remember as I don't bother with this rubbish unless it's printed in Lancet or something) that would make it carcinogenic.

So now my wife is on a water-bottle hunt (ie buy new ones for the kids to bring to school - never mind that there are water coolers installed).

how do you scrub the inside of a bottle?
or do they mean if you lick the outside ?

There may be a (very very slight) risk of using a mobile while filling your tank, but the 'evidence' that it is dangerous is very much an urban myth - the reported incidents in SA were completely false.

actually, its true, i heard from it before that a chemical in the plastic bottle that if reused for the nth time can be dangerous since the chemical will go to the water your drinking inso goes to your body with some undesirable before. i cant recall the chemical but i remember hearing it sometime ago.

how are they leagally allowed to do this?

wellard 09-22-2003 03:59 AM

The question that should also be asked is " What bottle are you going to replace it with?" If the Answer is Aluminium then you could have very serious problems. The link between aluminium and Alzheimer’s disease is a well documented one, though extremely unlikely that there would be a problem from pots and pans, water bottles made from aluminium corrode very easily and the aluminium oxide is readily absorbed into your body. The long term danger of aluminium ingestion for those in the aircraft industry is starting to raise it's head.

Donut 09-22-2003 07:45 AM

Of course it's true! ;)
