Hi
People i was wondering what you think is the best rpg |
Baldur`s gate series. Followed by Planscape:Torment.
|
I like RPG's as close to PnP AD&D as possible. Therefor I voted the BG series.
I vasted a lot of time playing DII, until I found out that I couldn't stop, eventhough it wasn't fun anymore. It was reduced to: Maybe I'll find that elite unique in the next Boss run, as if that would change anything even if I found it :( I prefer AD&D RPG's with a story line, other than "kill cows to get XP" and "kill Bosses to get good weapon (maybe)" and "when most Bosses and most cows are dead - repeat". I also like to have a party of (my own) NPC's where some members covers for the weaknesses of other members and vice versa (instead of a party with other players, where everyone is running for items instead of backing up for other party members (i.e. do not use ranged attacks - you are farther away from dropped items :( )). My faves aren't on there -- Might & Magic, Wizards & Warriors, Pen & Paper... :D
But I agree with InsaneBane -- slaughterhouse games aren't a lot of fun, and quests need to relate to the game somehow. |
The best RPG is IMO Daggerfall, cause you have so much choice! You could do anything you want almost! Morrowind is a good second, but it lacks the random quest thingy...

It's not that D1 was so bad, you could play that one through a dozen times and still discover a new quest on your thirteenth trek. Take the Sean Connery wizard character and you'd have a real challenge on the later levels. But why did you have to say 'series'? D2 isn't even worth the title of 'game' Okay, so I did take one character all the way through the Hell difficulty and put quite a decent number of hours into it, but still. EDIT: It's too late now, but something tells me I shouldn't have mentioned playing D2. I feel suddenly vulnerable out here in the open. [ 08-21-2003, 10:36 AM: Message edited by: Legolas ] |
I voted for the Baldur's Gate series although the Final Fantasy series was a close second.
You should be able to vote for the Shenmue series too that's a good series. Who would have thought that a game were you have to get a job would be so much fun :D |
....But I Like NWN. I really Do. I can't be the only one. I Love building my character & playing in hundreds of different worlds...

well theres a problem with your poll see you cant expect bg to lose beacause this is a d&d site also ff series kicks @$$
|
Hands down Zoarre! Man was that a game and for the time the graphics. I mean how could you beat those graphics?
I think my favorite all time game still goes to Bard's Tale. I have not seen anything that beats it. Granamere |
ff7 all the way it was the base of rpgs it revolutionized the rpg business as we know it.
|
PnP Dungeons and Dragons is the best RPG of all time, because it's a never-ending game. I've been playing for six years, and I still haven't been disappointed by it.
I vote secondly for the FF series, FF7 and 9 were masterpieces for the RPG world as well as Grandia. |
Thanks people
1. Diablo isn't much of an RPG its more of a hack & slash 2. FF7 is great!!!!!!!!!! 3. I dont know what some of the RPGs are that u people mentioned (Daggerfall?) 4. I probably don't know alot of RPGs, cuz i like in australia and USA gets most of them |
Planescape Torment.. not a single RPG (that I have played) has come close.
|
well, I voted for Baldur's Gate series, mostly because I love SoA too much ^_*
(I like FF series as well, especially FF7, but not to the point that I'm addicted to SoA) however, I think the list is flaw to begin with! why Neverwinter Nights is up there while fallout series and Planescape Torment aren't? by what criteria are those games/series listed? what separate them from "other"? |
For me it's Might and Magic 6. nothing can beat that.

For years i loved ff7 more than any other game in the world, and i hated ff8.
But not long ago i saw ff8 on the shelf really cheap and couldnt help myself but buy it, and ever since i finally finished it, it has now become my favourite game. The final fantasy series is by far my favourite series, i have finished most of them on the playstation(1) and nintendo but have never played 10, apparently it is good. my second choice would have to be BG series. |
I think people also prefer playing different RPGs by what perspective they are in as well as how many characters are involved. I've found I prefer first-person perspective like in Might & Magic, Wizards & Warriors, Morrowind, and Wizardry 8 to the third-person perspective of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Planescape: Torment. In fact, of the latter, I've only been able to stand Planescape: Torment which I adored the first time around and got bored to death with the second time. Also, I prefer games with several main characters, not just one; even though Morrowind has a ton of replayability due to the huge amount of main and subquests, the interpersonal interaction gets pretty boring sometimes.

Vampire: The Masquerade, Redemption.
It's an RPG, an adventure game, and a drama movie all rolled into one! ;) |
Based on your obscenely limited list, I'd go with Baldur's Gate series taking #1 position and Morrowind in 2nd. IMHO Everquest does not qualify as an RPG regardless of what the makers had intended. In the end it became a realm of Power Gamers not Role Players. HUGE difference.

For shear depth of material and non-linear play I had to vote for EverQuest. There is no other RPG on the market with the amount of material, areas to explore, or loot to be had then EQ.
Diablo?! Geez if we are going to consider Diablo a RPG then I nominate Deus Ex for best RPG ;) |

I don't think any RPG is really role-playing. I mean they are all based on a small set of rules and unless you are playing PnP then there is only so many things you can do in them and only so many options as to how to do them. Even in PnP games unless you are a "serious" actor it normally turns into a get the gold/EQ and that's about it. The best rpg imo is the most origional one, one that you can get drawn into (like a good book). I liked Morrowind but it got old near the end and I hated Wizardry 8, not for it's origionality, just cuz EVERY combat in the game got harder the higher level your characters got and almost every combat was too hard. I haven't played the other games. Of all the games I've played I like the Legend of Zelda games (not really a rpg). Every time you progress in the game something gets added that changes the game (a new weapon, ability, character, town etc). If there was a rpg like that that would be the one I'd vote for.

Baldurs Gate series.
|
Morrowind, with both BG 1&2 and M&M 6&7 in a close second place.

What about the golden oldies like Lufia 2 and Secret of Evermore? Am I the only one still playing my SNES?
