turns out that it was just a sperm whale carcass. No giant squid :(

It would have been better if it was a giant squid. They are very interesting and mysterious creatures. Not much info is known about them.

Well, "fake" is perhaps a little bit too strong a sentiment. After all, I do recall reading a part of the original article in which the option that it wasn't a squid or octopus at all was still being kept open; they simply didn't know what it was until they'd have investigated the remains properly. ;)

Nothing like seeing a 40 foot big rotting mass of gelatinous whale guts before lunch, huh?
