As some of you will know Im pretty new here. I stumbled across this site while looking for info on Bg2. I spent the last ten years or so playing the Final fantasy and dragon warrior games on nintendo and such. Having my pc I got into Diablo which I thought was good, Diablo 2 which I thought was great and just recently finished Dungeon Siege which I also thought was good. So after a bit o research I thought, ok, Bg 2, Icewind Dale, or something else? Settled on Bg2.....Im not likein it that much! Anybody have any suggestions for something more Diablo like? Or is it just that im still feeling residuals from my last game and need to give it more of a chance?

You could try Icewind Dale II, it's a mix between Bladur's Gate and Diablo.

You would probably also enjoy Divine Divinity. It remind me a lot of diablo.

For Diablo-like gaming I suggest Westwood Studio's fun little game entitled NOX. It is from the year 2000 but you can still find it cheap. Also, I recommend Divine Divinity. The world is huge, filled with a main quest and tons of side quests, yet very much in the Diablo realm of a lot of fighting.

Icewind Dale is a major Dungeon Crawl with tons of fighting, but is a party type composition though many do solo the game. However, the very essence of IWD is Dungeons & Dragons in nature like BG1 and BG2. I'd start with BG1 myself to get the feel of the game and move on to BG2.

I second that

You don't like Baldur's Gate 2? WOW!! You're probably one of the first people that I've met who doesn't like that game :D No offense, everyone has his or hers own opinion of course

Grendal 06-24-2003 03:14 PM

well like I said link its probably just residuals from playing the previous game...Im like that with books to...takes me awhile to get into one if Ive just finished a good one. It also doesnt help that I had the game for aproximately 5 hours and 37 minuits before my sisters puppy decided to use my game manual for her "house training" paper.

hey i also didnt like the first part when i played bg2.. (hate dungeon-crawl) but give it a chance it gets so much better ;) ..also play bg1 first.. so you can understand the story line better as well as creating a cool character from scratch..

Grendal 06-24-2003 05:55 PM

thanks for the input folks...I think maybe Ill go get a used copy o BG1 and see where that gets me. Does anyone know if I can get a replacement manual for BG2?

Sure

i just have to say this: give bg2 just a few more hours!(or bg1, if you decide to start it first. you could, btw, buy it from ebay for a few bucks)let the MASSIVE storyline start to unfold and i guarentee youll be hooked. the critics arent lying when they say this is the best rpg ever!(though i think its pretty much tied with bg1)i didnt like bg2 at first either(im ashamed to admit it), but it didnt take too long before i found my self sitting from 8 A.M to 4 A.M playing this unbeliavable game

dafan 06-24-2003 11:25 PM

Indeed bg2 is the best rpg ever... I'd be really surprised if you won't like it after giving it a couple of more hours!

If you're into Diablo-esque games, download a demo of Dungeon Siege and see what you think. If your machine's up to spec, it's incredibly pretty with awesome sound and has an absolute shirt-load of magical weapons and spells to waste your enemies with. It's also got a lame plot, bad dialogue, terrible AI and is linear, monotonous, tedius and repetetive. And repetetive. You'll love it. :D

Grendal 06-25-2003 06:02 PM

Thanks for all the input folks...I wound up getting BG1 since everyone is saying what an awsome series this is. (and it has instructions!) So Im gonna start from the beginning and give it at least 10 hours b4 making an uninformed decision!

I have a theory that most people who don't like BGII, or don't like Imoen, didn't play BG. I really think that playing all the way through BG (TotSC optional) should be a prerequisite to playing BGII.

Well, in BG1 Imoen's ubiquitous "Heyya" does kinda get on my nerves. ;) But, I agree otherwise. BG2 is BETTER, but different. The wondering around in BG1 really has that "new adventurer" feel.

Attalus 06-25-2003 07:28 PM

She annoyed Galadria, too, especially the "You're a queer fellow" bit. She was my favorite NPC, though. I got killed by a baselisk, once, trying to rescue her reading a stone-to-flesh scroll. I liked how she was the first NPC you met and how you could leave her and run off, and she would always be waiting. Strangely enough, my second favorite was Viconia. My first words opening up the BGII manual were, "Hey, you get Immy back. And Vickey, too. Wow, she's a lot better looking." :D

Mahlennacht 06-26-2003 01:37 AM

anecdote: The very first CRPG I tried was the demo of BG2, which was the entire irenicus-dungeon section. Tried it, after a few hours, couldn't stand it!!!. Boring, complicated, and difficult! Quit. After a few days tried it again because I didn't have anything else to play. This time I decided to forge through, and finally finished the dungeon. My sis was watching too and we were getting VERY interested near the end. Wondered whether to buy the full version or not, since EVERYONE was saying "game of the year" as well as "over 300 hrs gameplay". Finally did pay the 49 dollars for it. Got thru the dungeon, much smoother this time, now I'm getting the hang of how to play, how to use spells... Then I wandered around Waukeen's Promenade for a few hours, and while I was doing this I GOT ADDICTED suddenly. That was about March 2001 and I haven't really stopped playing since.

This is an uncommon case where my first impressions were obviously not reliable. Every game should be given a fighting chance. I gave Diablo2-demo, Morrowind and NeverWinterNights (single-player) a fair chance, I think - I played each for about a month before I decided they really weren't for me. But still I'm thinking of trying NWN again - looks like one never knows for sure how much they don't like things.

Grendal, I don't know how long you were doing SoA, but I'd say if you didn't like it after playing it for, say, a few weeks, then the AD&D-style of game is probably just not your type of game? Which is cool - then again, I was a semi-hardcore FPS deathmatch player only, until I got hooked on BG2, so your tastes could very well change.

NOW I'm thinking of getting BG1/TotSC as well to complete the "set". [I have ToB as well, but for some reason I don't like it as much, maybe the setting of the game is not as expansive as SoA, maybe because everyone's so high-level that I never used any low level spells/abilities anymore... The only spells I used were Project Image, Dragon's Breath, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, and Death Fog, over and over again (well, it worked, didn't it?)]

Nanobyte 06-26-2003 02:08 AM

Indeed. Throne of Bhaal was a horrible ending to the BG series. I would have been satisified with the end of SoA, and keeping it as is.

BTW, the openness of BG1 left me a little distraught, but TotSC makes it quite interesting. I'd say, if you're going to get BG1, go ahead and get the expansion. The best part of the entire BG saga is Durlag's Tower, at least in my opinion.

Too much hach`n` slash in ToB for my taste. But it is still good.
