<font color=deepskyblue><font color=cyan>Erthozumas</font> - a term used to see how many members will read this thread to learn what the hell "Erthozumas" means.

harleyquinn 05-30-2003 04:06 PM

Is that another word for ? LOL

Attalus 05-30-2003 04:14 PM

Erythro= red, as in erythrocytes
Zuma, a foul-tasting alcholic beverage. Zuma is now making one in red, like Pepsi Fusion?

Do you mean Zima? Or is Zuma something else?

Mouse 05-30-2003 04:49 PM

Cerek - thou hast spammed. Never again will I look upon thy multicoloured and carefully worded answers in quite the same way again.

An era has come to an end. Let us all take a moment to quietly mourn the passing of another victim of the hideous curse that is..........lexicographic inexactitude.

You are in my thoughts

Stormymystic 05-30-2003 04:55 PM

roflmao, never thought the day would come when you would stoop so low cerek :D

<font color=deepskyblue>Thy words do wound me, <font color=red>Sir Mouse O' Tier</font> Thou dost accuse me of spamming? I say thee "Nay". Twas not spam at all. Rather, twas an experiment in human curiosity.

I did seek to see how many of our gathered assemblage would be lured to a thread whose title held no known meaning. Would they pass by the thread without a glance, discerning that it held no interest for them, or would their curiosity cause them to at least glance inside to see what mystery lay within.

I foreswear that I have maintained my established reputation for "carefully worded answers". Surely thou did note that I thanked thee for participating, rather than mocking thee with a taunting gloat of <font color=yellow>"GOTCHA"</font>.

A furtive glance at my commentary enumeration will provide the final proof that this was no Posting of the Potted Meat. I had recently attained a new level of recognition shortly before creating this thread...so the few additions I may gain to my C.E. (commentary enumeration) from this impromptu experiment will be of litte to no benefit for my personal gain.

Though my pride is wounded, I do believe thy accusations were made at least partly in jest. Therefore, with deference to your position of authority, I shall disregard this minor besmirchement of my reputation. But I pray thee, good sir, to please be less hasty in thy future judgements. :( </font>

robertthebard 05-31-2003 12:10 AM

Huh? Tricked into another poll. But at least I didn't have to answer any questions...

Donut 05-31-2003 05:03 AM

Okay - you got me!

Lovisa 05-31-2003 05:12 AM

I love that old way to talk...it's just so beautiful...

Cerek - by any other name is still

Indemaijinj 05-31-2003 07:36 AM

Cerek the Troll.

IronDragon 05-31-2003 12:38 PM

You made the assumption that people would be interested in finding out the definition of that word.

I am willing to bet that most visitors to this post came because they are always interested in your dazzling, fascinating and well written essays.

Dreamer128 05-31-2003 01:32 PM

You've got me. Best I post something anyway, so I'll get at least something out of this...

Drake 05-31-2003 01:46 PM

Note to self: never enter a thread when you dont undertand the title.

<font color=deepskyblue>Ahhhhhh.....<font color=white>Irondragon</font>, you're gonna make me blush

<font color=coral>Drake</font> hit the proverbial nail on the head. It wasn't an assumption that people would want to know the definition of <font color=cyan>Erthozumas</font> (a term I made up off the top of my head). Rather, it was an experiment to see how many people would click on a thread when they didn't understand the title.

It would have been very interesting if the Ironworks bulletin board software also showed how many times a thread was viewed. I'm certain there were many people who looked at the thread without posting. In other forums that have this feature, the number of "visits" to a thread is normally 3-5 times higher than the number of "responses". Thirteen members took time to post in the thread, so it's relatively safe to say that at least 36-40 members actually looked at the thread.

As I pointed out to <font color=red>Mouse</font> (in amateurish Old English), it was an experiment in human curiosity.......and a bit of a "joke thread" created during a moment of silliness during an otherwise very hectic day of work. ;) </font>

Pet peeve alert... ;)
What you wrote was modern English Cerek - you wouldn't be able to produce Old English (not even amateurishly :D ) since superficially, it doesn't resemble modern English at all - though you probably would be able to make sense of some of the words.
People often call "Shakespeare's English" or language with thee's, thy's and thou's Old English but that's almost as inaccurate as calling Italian Spanish.

Here's an example of old English, from one of my favourite poems, to demonstrate the point ;)

Leodum is minum swylce him mon lác gife

Ungelic is ús.
Wulf is on iege, ic on oþerre
fæst is þæt eglond, fenne biworpen

willað hy hine aþecgan gif he on þreat cymeð
Ungelice is us.

As for the topic of this thread, shame on you! Like IronDragon I expected one of your usual well-phrased serious posts... I fell into the trap immediately after you posted it, but wouldn't give you the satisfaction of knowing you'd fooled yet another IW member :D

Uh, Mel, I think you just did. But, as usual, you are correct. Shakespeare wrote Modern English. All that "quaint" part originated in the early 19th Century with Sir Walter Scott and his imitators. :D

LOL, I know - I meant when I first fell into the trap (immediately when the thread was posted), I didn't post then.
But as you never cease to remind me, I'd never leave the chance for a good "nitpick". ;)

</font>
<font color=deepskyblue>I stand humbly corrected, <font color=yellow>Melusine</font>. Thank you for pointing out my error. Now I've learned something from this thread (in addition to having fun with it ;) ).

BTW, I've sent you a PM I would like you to read (as time permits).</font>

I'd be upset if you did. In fact, you missed a couple that I intentionally left as bait. Oh, well, better luck next time and sleep well. ;)
