In all this super hero comotion, where can I read the X-men comics online?

Preferably starting from no.1!

Anywhere?

Gangrell 05-04-2003 11:22 PM

I'm sure there are X-Men comics, just go to E-Bay and search around for some. As for No.1, I know there isn't any, because there's only 1-2 issues of it in existance and they're sold for two to three thousand dollars. So I doubt No.1 would be online.

Lavindathar 05-04-2003 11:33 PM

Not looking to purchase, just to read online.

Gangrell 05-04-2003 11:37 PM

In that case, I don't really know then. You can try browsing around on Google, but I doubt they have any readible ones online.

Luvian 05-04-2003 11:38 PM

This is illegal.

Publishing X-men comic on the net, or reading them.

Gangrell 05-05-2003 12:39 AM

Oh yea, copywrite law. Must've slipped my mind.

It is not illegal if Marvel has released them for online publishing. Many books can now be read online.

In fact, if it's been published online anywhere, chances are someone along the line got permission.

Finally, it is only illegal if it is being sold for profit or if it hurts Marvel's proceeds from its copyright (note: it is a "right" not a "write"). Because Marvel no longer publishes these out-of-print comics, it will not hurt Marvel's profits -- and the profits of comic book dealers don't factor into equating damage done to MARVEL'S copyright.

So, if it is published online, and you don't have to pay for it, it is [ed]likely [/ed]legal.

I appreciate a site that (unlike others) shows concern for online abuse of intellectual property -- but don't hamstring yourself thinking these rights extend further than they do.

You're also talking about a very loooooooooooong time spent in front of the PC if you do find them. I collected and read X-Men comics for over 6 years, and my collection only goes back to issue #200 (when Magneto took over Xaviers school). I stopped collecting about 10 years ago, so you are looking at around 1000 comics you would have to read (maybe more).

It would be better to just ask for summaries for others who have read them - timewise anyway.
The only reason Luvian pointed this out is because you are not allowed to openly talk about illegal stuff, like Kazaa. You can talk about it, but not where to get it or openly boast about it...I need a little help here, any mods clear this up? Or older members?

Kazaa is illegal?!?!?!?

Timber Loftis 05-06-2003 02:06 PM

Kazaa may be illegal but check my post above for why online X-men publishing (if you find any) would likely not be illegal.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, I just wanted to say, WOW, I sure do learn a lot because of our on-site lawyer :D
Thanks for all the free legal info, TL

No way you could find such a large amount of material on the net. Not to mention the long and convoluted X-Men continuity. Like Cerek said, better you ask around, or buy some trade paperbacks.

Timber Loftis 05-06-2003 02:23 PM

Marvel mini-sites where you can buy comix and graphic novels:

As I suspected, it seems Marvel has protected its interest by not letting this stuff get out on the net. Somehow.

Almost forgot, there are some 'Complete Guide to the X-men' books out there (best of which was published by Dorling Kindersley). You could browse through one at your local bookstore.

Kazaa is illegal?!?!?!?
No, sorry, what I meant was the use of it can be illegal. So, you can download a film DVD rip before the film is even released. That is a violation of copyright laws.

And I never said anything about the comics, I only said if something is illegal, discussion about it is prohibited. Or something like that.

Luvian 05-06-2003 04:26 PM

Yes, you can't discuss illegal stuff like that here, because that would get Ziroc in trouble both morally and legally.

ROMs and MP3s got "published online" too, and they don't seem leagal to me.

We don't care what you do outside the board, but here, you can't discuss illegal stuff. That's the rule.

okay, stupid question time. If I were to take my part of the xmen series #80-about #166, more or less inclusive, which covers the transition from the 'old', or original xmen in the blue and yellow thru the addition of teens to Xavier's school, the 'supposed' defeat of the sentinels, the metamorphosis of Jean Grey into Pheonix, into dark pheonix, the next event in that storyline (not to ruin it for those who don't know!) I do have in it's entirety, the last time i looked, that event series was a couple hundred $ inthe books. up to about scott summers sabbatical.

Supposing that material were to get online - never mind the fact it would take a dedicated comp and scanner and flunkie about a week to do it, full time - where in the world would you find that much free storage space on the web w/o having to get a website or domain?

other than that, if you want the cliff notes version, say so. Special requests for a page or an issue i might have would be okay, if it passes the board smell test. I dunno - no profit attempt or motive on my part, and I did pay my coin 20-25 years ago when I was an avid comic collector. all the spidermans (4 titles), ironman, batman, justice league, avengers, the new teen titans, firestorm, FF4, gawd, i gotta go through that box someday - sell it all while it's still worth something. about400-450 titles, in fair to very good condition, takers?

Lavindathar 05-07-2003 01:42 PM

Would love comics, but not got the money to afford them!

Everyone send me a freebie!

PWEASE!

J.J, how much would you want for all your X-men lot?
