Mine would have to be, cruel.

Talthyr Malkaviel 06-02-2002 01:48 PM

Unique. ;)
Right, since we have to expand, In'd say unique, because although they may be every one f those other things everyone else said, the sum of these things is what make them truly unique.
(In both a bad way and a good way.)

Sir ReGiN, one-word responses aren't allowed on this forum...it's called SPAM. If you want to describe with one word, then expound on why, and stimulate discussion, that's fine. But everyone posting just one word is a spam-fest. If that continues here, I will close this thread.

I'm going to leave it open for the time being to see if the remaining posters choose to turn it into a more open discussion.

The word I would use to describe humans is "ridiculous". Ridiculous in that they think they're vastly more important than they are, and yet are so easily swayed or influenced by others. Looking at most human behavior, I'm torn between laughing, crying, or both...including my own.

You heard the man (points up)
Feel free to say why you chose what you did and why you wouldn't choose anything else. ;)

I think that with the power we wield, we are gods; we could potentially destroy all life on this planet, but still preserve our race.
We could easily bring life to other planets (mars & moon since theirs water there) if the funding was raised.
We can change nature with our intervention, deforesting whole continents and changing pastures to desert.
Our existence has permanently changed the earth and we can alter life on a genetic level, Preserve life beyond what is natural thanks to life support machines, We can even Do organ transplants, Artificial hearts, Weapons of an efficiency and power unequalled, yet also the potential for good deeds (which nothing else can match, since it is only humans that have such concepts), and our powers can only grow.

Only Humans have meaningful lives, Compared to any other animals or indeed anything else on earth, we are gods.

My one word is- Young.

We still have some evolving to do, individually and collectively. And plenty of time to do it as long as we avoid self-annihalation.

Which is my point. We will, eventually, lead to our own explosive, painful death, whether directly or from a chain of events we cause. And we can do nothing to stop this.

There. Bet that's brightened up your day now, hasn't it? :D

Ah, but that is where we prove ourselves to be so great, for we can bypass the natural to a certain extent, through our own creations such as society and science, perhaps one day we will have the potential to genetically or cybernetic alter ourselves to create something better than the form we have evolved to, our evolution can be taken into the hands of a conscious intelligence, thus allowing us to shape our form into a superior one.

The truly amazing aspect about humans is though that while your description is mostly accurate when it comes to the human race as a whole - we are laughable in our predictability - the individual human being remains so utterly confusing and unpredictable - whenever you think you have truly figured him or her out the person in question will say or do something that forces you to at least alter your perception significantly. So, maybe the right word to describe the common denominator of those two different perspectives would be "humbling".
I don’t think so, the human race will survive, just most of it will die perhaps, if such a thing does come to pass.
The Chinese have already set in motion plans for a moonbase, and they hope to have it ready by 2010, It may eventually become self sustaining, and it would be far beyond the reach of any human weapons as of the moment.

Horatio 06-02-2002 03:05 PM

But will we not do the same on the moonbase? Do not think that we will learn from our mistakes. Trust me, we won't.

It wont become self-sustaining - the moon's resources are too limited, and by the act of setting it up, the potential weapons to attack it would have to be created.

One word to describe humans - chaotic.

BEER, sorry, couldn't come up with something else since i'm getting kinda tipsy overhere.

Right, like having gills. Eventually our ventures into water could lead the development of gills. If we already have the dormant genes for gills, then we could activate them using the knowledge of genetic science. Hell, we could even concievably engineer a brand new conscious race and be god ourselves, by giving cats thumbs and making agressive behavior a recessive gene trait. Am I off into Sci-fi land or what?

Chewbacca 06-02-2002 03:21 PM

What science can't give humans is a conscience. If our physical evolution is all we focus on, we will still just be a money driven war-torn world society on a polluted planet full of prisons and homeless camps. Now am I painting a rosy picture or what?

My word is 'adaptable'. People can survive in all sorts of situations, adaptability is what has enabled the human race to survive so far!

The Hunter of Jahanna 06-02-2002 08:11 PM

COWARDLY because almost everyone is afraid of offending some one else with what they think , say or do. I have been guilty of this as well , but I'm getting better.

mistral4543 06-02-2002 08:17 PM

Complex.

Not all humans behave the way you expect them to, and usually the so-called nasty people have a good side to their characters. The thought processes of human are so intricate that we may not be able to predict the exact course of action even our loved ones will take.

Ladyzekke 06-02-2002 09:25 PM

Growing.

As in Learning. As humans we are always continuously learning, not just at work or school, but little things, subconcious things that we might not even be aware of. Therefore humans are always growing in one way or another, some slower some faster, but still all growing, we have no choice as Time pushes us forwards.

Gabrielles blades 06-02-2002 09:47 PM

in one words humans are: insane

Beautiful

I am speaking in terms of potential, as not everybody reaches the potential that they could. But alot do! This list is what makes people beautiful. With the gifts that we each possess, we can make many beautiful things and be lovely ourselves.

Music: We have the ability to make haunting, wonderful melodies that touch the very soul and can move a person to tears.

Compassionate: Many people have the talent of compassion for others, which makes them beautiful.

Attractiveness: There are many attractive people in the world, each bearing a distinctive appeal.

Friendly: I know many people who go out of their way to help someone else feel welcome in a new place, and provide for them wahtever is lacking.

Supportive: Many people I know enjoy the task of helping bear another's burdon.

I bet there are many more words that I could use to describe the beautiful potential that we each posess.

Aelia Jusa 06-02-2002 10:06 PM

Smelly - you don't believe me, go to a supermarket - ugh :D

Inward-thinking, of ourselves personally, and of our race as a whole.

Harkoliar 06-03-2002 01:19 AM

recurring
- i say this because people tend to make the same mistakes no matter how much knowledge we have. people i say people tand to make the same mistakes because people cant experience people who made in the past. people tend to forget or experiment with those "mistakes" made therefor doing the same thing again.

Jorath Calar 06-03-2002 05:18 AM

Like my hero Bill Hicks said..."We are a Virus with shoes..."

Okey I give us a break... one word?...
Potential
I mean if we would stop killing and hurting each other, we could conquer anything.

Well thanks all you guys for showing us what we are. We're not the only things on the planet that have to kill to survive. Never mind forget it!

My word is random. No two people are exactly like, and you can't always expect one to act in a certain way.

Moni 06-03-2002 11:54 AM

My word would be self-destructive.

Yes, we possess the intelligence and the knowledge to figure out and to know what we are doing to destroy the earth below us, but we do little to nothing to stop it. Maybe I should have said foolish?
