I turned me PC on and got some weird message about having a CHECKSUM error - wtf is that?
Then I rebooted, and got a message saying: "CPU IS UNWORKABLE OR HAS BEEN CHANGED" When I hit F1, it continues to boot up OK, although I'm still getting GPFs all over the place. This sounds serious to me, can anyone help? |
Select nearest hammer, pick up hammer, draw back arm and POW!!!!!
Sorry Epona - will melt into the background and let the tecchie minded people help now - you haven't got any vodka on you by any chance - I could do with a drink :D |

And no vodka - heck, *I* could do with some! |
I think it's gone beyond amateur help. It sounds like its time to call in the professionals i.e. the sort of people who advertise in the classified sections of newspapers. The only other thing I can think of is getting hold of a good diagnostic prog like Sisoft Sandra and letting it try to sort you out.
Or just go with Davros's suggestion...... [ 06-01-2002, 07:19 PM: Message edited by: Mouse ] |
What, she still hasn't taken my suggestion - all that creative input for a sum total of no action (sigh).

WOOHOO - IT'S HAMMER TIME :D

Checksum errors at boot usually have to do with a BIOS problem. Hopefully your CMOS battery is dying. Replacements are cheap. Enter the BIOS and see if the date and time are correct. If it is right, you may need to update the BIOS...not an easy task to describe in a forum.

THE HAMMER LAURA!!!!!!!! THE HAMMER............

You don't overclock do you?
A checksum error can either be caused by incorrect cmos settings, a dying battery, or disconnecting power to your pc without shutting down. Try going into your bios, hit enter on save and exit and see if it does it again. While you're in there, look around and make sure all of the information is correct (specifically your processor settings). |

Skydude and Milamber have the right of it Epona Hopefully its just the little battery on your motherboard. Usually a CR-2032 3volt battery. Very common and easy to replace....hopefully it isn't a dying BIOS chip.

 I hope its not the BIOS chip :/ I HATE to having to replace them. > :(

Its odd though, a BIOS battery usualy lasts about 5 years - longer than the life of most mobos anyway. Ive only seen one die once, and that board had a short in the battery circuit. |
well, isn't your PC brand new Epona? I thought it was... so if it was the BIOS then it means something short circuited or something right?

If the PC was new, it might have had an old battery slapped in at assembly time god only knows how long those things sit on the shelf before they are used (the batteries) |
