the previous thread is here:

Cloudy's Cafe

Come in, be welcome, be comfortable, be yourself

Welcome to Cloudy's Cafe, a place to have a cup of coffee or a good
darjeeling and the finest in conversation and camaraderie.

The proprietor asks that you follow a few simple guidelines:

this is a real conversation zone, not a role-play zone

* no flaming; if you disagree with a viewpoint expressed by any patron, please do so in a civil manner

* any topic is fair game, but keep posts to the standards that Ziroc has set for the entire forum, please (ie: foul language is not appropriate and things should be suitable for all audiences)
-a side note from Cloudy: I see this as a place for those short
conversations about a new baby or the latest soccer fiasco, not for things that are big enough to warrant their own threads, by all means give those things the space they need and post separately!

* Please, no one word or smiley posts (Ziroc has declared them 'real spam' and the proprietor doesn't want the reputuation of "good spam" to suffer!)

* do feel free to be serious or silly and enjoy the company of others while you are here. By all means POST if you have something to say, even to start another topic , we can handle multiple chats, we're a CAFE!!! But be courteous and don't disrupt a conversation just to disrupt it.

Come on in! The bar is stocked with coffees, teas, juices and waters from around the world. And purple napkins, of course!

The lighting is low, the golden oak counters and tables glow with inviting warmth. Near the window, the lighting is brighter, as comfy, plush leather armchairs wait for those who'd like to read a book while relaxing to music or just lazily watch the world go by.

Cloudbringer 04-01-2003 03:10 PM

PLEASE NOTE

This is a modified reminder that I've posted before in reply to someone asking "can we spam the cafe". It still holds true, so I'm going to repeat it periodically for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Read the first post of the thread, it's NOT a spam zone. If you want to discuss you grades, a problem with a teacher, the weather, your neighbor's new car etc.....etc.. (real life conversations) this is the place. I don't mind a SMALL amount of spam but when the Cafe gets to be 8 pages in one day and it's all one liner pure spam, I have to ask people not to do it because most of the members who would come to talk about their day or things that they want advice or sympathy or cheers on, will not post in that atmosphere. I want you to be comfy here, but not at the expense of other members.

So the answer is NO, I don't want to see page after page of roleplay spam or one liner spamfests that could be done on msn or aim etc. because our goal is to TALK WITH one another , not fill up a cafe in five hours. ;) :D HOWEVER, I'm not gonna jump on anyone for a few of these kinds of things, only if it gets out of hand. :D

Gammit 04-01-2003 04:42 PM

Hello all. Question for you. Today I showed my students' their third quarter grades, and one of them received a "D." He believes that the cause of this is because he keeps losing 5 points per test for not placing his hour on the top of the paper. Please note, this is a rule of my cooperating teacher (I'm just the student teacher), and so I'm abiding by this. My cooperating teacher says that he requires labels so he doesn't have to hunt through 150 papers to see where somebody's grade is. My question is this: do you think losing 5 points (per assignment) is fair for neglecting to properly label your work?

My thoughts
yes:
1.) I was required to put my name, the date, the hour, and the assignment on EVERYTHING that was turned in in high school.
2.) It IS a pain to look through class lists just to find where a paper belongs.
3.) You're only losing five points on a fifty-point test
4.) the real world isn't so forgiving, so...

no:
1.) it has caused some students to go from a B- to a C+ on a test, repeatedly
2.) losing points (academics) should probably be separated from behavior, if at all possible.

So again, what do you think? Sorry such a long post...

Timber Loftis 04-01-2003 04:46 PM

On the ACT, SAT, PSAT-NMSQT, LSAT, GRE, etc. failure to properly follow instructions can result in an absolute zero. If you can't follow the instructions given to take the exam, you've failed the first hurdle. A student so (a) absent-minded and (b) involved enough to care and complain should be thankful for the help in getting through this, one of life's many little lessons. ;)

Kakero 04-01-2003 05:05 PM

that's a very nice picture Sigmar. ;)

Good morning, all. Finally able to post again, now that the April 1 strangeness is over. Oh, well. How is everyone. Gammit, I am completely with TL on this one. If you cannot follow simple instructions, you are going to have more than that grade to worry about. I suspect defiance.

HAPPY NEW BABY, ELIF! That's wonderful news! Of course, now that you won't be sleeping much you can sit up and compose witty things for IW..LOL!

Gammit, I'd have to agree, not being able to follow the rules, isn't a good thing for that student and the penalty MAY actually force him to remember to follow them.

Hey all, work is busy today, so I'll be scarce! Hope you're having a fantastic day so far! :D

Gammit,
You should explain to the student the flaw in his logic. Losing points on the tests may result in getting a 45/50 (or 90%) but if he was excelling at all his other work, then he could still pull off an A (unless 90% is no longer an A).
It's kinda like my brother who said he failed out of college because his gym teacher gave him a D. He didn't seem to think the fact that he failed his English and Math classes because he didn't do the work factored into it. In his mind, it was because he got a D in gym.
Better he learn to buckle down now in school before he gets out there into college and learns what not following instructions can really result in.
Also, I don't think not putting the header on the document is a behavior issue, it's an issue with not learning to follow directions and not learning to learn from his mistakes. I could see it happening once or twice, but after that, he should be responsible enough to take the extra 3 seconds to make sure it's on his paper so as not to lose the points.
I hope you and the other teacher stick to your guns. The student needs to learn to take responsibility for his own actions and not blame them on you two.
