From the BBC news online.

Dogs 'executed' for jailbreak

Officials at a prison in northern Serbia have killed two guard dogs for not barking when five inmates escaped, reports say.
Local media reported that the dogs had been "found guilty" of not alerting the guards to the get-away as they had been trained to do.

The dogs did not deserve the death penalty

Branka Pasko, animal rights activist
The two 15-year-old Sarplaninac dogs - also known as Yugoslav Shepherds - were shot dead at the dog pound in the town of Sombor, 150 kilometres (93 miles) north-west of Belgrade.

Local animal rights activists have protested against the shooting.

"The dogs did not deserve the death penalty and cannot ultimately be responsible for the escape," said Branko Pasko from the animal rights group Arka.

The dogs could have been sent into retirement or put to sleep with an injection, she said.

Local reports did not say where the guards were at the time of the break-out.

The five inmates escaped by digging a hole under a prison wall.

Three of the fugitives were later recaptured.

With the concern that they showed for pigs and their psychological hapiness, this must be really bad. I am waiting to see the fall out.

Edit: lest anyone think Im targeting the EU, I will post any really stupid actions i find in the news, regardless of their national origin :D

There are two fugitives still out there, and we're bickering about the dogs??

Okay - so I think it's inhumane. Personally, I wouldn't do it. And, in the US you can thankfully now go to jail for animal cruelty. Is that over-legislating? Or just a change from the traditional legal view that animals are strictly chattel? Remember - women were chattel once too. Sorry- my animal rights side is rearing its small but ugly head.

But, there are still two escapees on the loose.

RevRuby 02-24-2003 11:22 AM

shooting dogs? 15 yr old dogs? most dogs are deaf by then...idiots. amkes me want to put them on a leash with instructions to bark if they hear anything, then box their ears in.

antryg 02-24-2003 11:22 AM

Just another example of trying to keep dogs down. It's time to become a member of CCFODM. Don't delay, get your virtual dog today.

Seriously, how is a dog supposed to understand about tunneling and make the connection between people outside (like the guards) and prisoners? Did the guards on duty who screw up have to take the place of the dogs?

Ah that's alright then, thanks for the explanation.

Er... just one thing though.... then why did you put EU in the title when you post an article that isn't even related to it? Stick to the facts.

Er no, if I remember correctly, the only little nations that are expected to join the EU in the coming years are Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Rumania, Cyprus, Malta, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Bulgary...

Yep. Agreed.

antryg 02-24-2003 12:35 PM

TL, your pictures for pig production are entirely accurate. Ones for the chicken industry would show even worse abuses. I have never understood people's shock when they see how an agricultural industry (and it is an industry, just like an auto assembly line or a steel mill) actually works. Everybody expects the absolute best quality of food to miraculously appear at very low cost. It seems that people think that food animals freely roam a lush pastoral range and then decide to walk up to the butcher where they lay down and peacefully die, surrounded by friends and kin. You can raise food animals in "humane" conditions. It just costs more. You can transport food animals in a "humane" manner. It just costs more. You can kill and process them in a less tramautic manner. It just costs more. Where I live I can buy poultry, beef, and pork that have all been treated/processed in this more "humane" manner. It just costs from 4-10 times as much as food done the other way. Whether it is actually humane to treat animals nice up to the point of killing and eating them is another question.

MagiK 02-24-2003 12:39 PM

Antryg, it is the cost of feeding about 6 billion people, I think we could do with about 1/8th that population but they won't let me get rid of people :(

As far as I know Serbia & Montenegro haven't even applied yet. I might be wrong there, but I do know they haven't started the negotiations yet. While the countries that Melusine ennumerated have all fulfilled the requirements already and have also finished the negotiations and signed the agreements. I think they've all done that already. While Serbia & Montenegro isn't even close to joining the EU; as I said before, they haven't even started negotiating yet, and that usually takes years.

WillowIX 02-24-2003 05:21 PM

Antryg we could make it more cheaper than limiting space. Hormones are injected to further growth. I´m sure you have heard of broilers. Those poor things can´t walk since their induced overweight. Now I associate the word chicken with a adorable yellow fluffy little being, not a monster who can´t walk. ;) Somewhere the line has to be drawn.

Of course the above paragraph is not about mental health. IMO measurements should be taken on physical stats (mortality, sickness etc.). A high incidence of a disease points out that something is wrong. Let´s face it, we are breeding them for food. (Ehh that sounds terrible as well. Hey, I´m on a roll. LOL)

Edit: I wanted a snazzy font color as well. ;)

Yep, that's what I thought too. AFAIK it's correct the way you said it.

Fishing again my friend?

Why would the world be "think"ing that you are targetting the EU I wonder? At risk of overstating the obvious, your posts on the "intelligent life on earth" were derinding the people themselves for being stupid - not the country or in this case the EU. This post could have done the same by having a title like "Stupidity - you find it everywhere". Still - without the extra swipe, the bait wouldn't have attracted so many fish now would it :D .

antryg 02-24-2003 05:52 PM

Willow, I agree with you about the injections, hormones or ortherwise. I've seen farms (Tyson) which, at that time, used those forced growth methods and I didn't find it a pretty sight. If you were ever behind a truck loaded with chickens it would probably make you sick.

The next step I guess would be to bring up Kobi beef and how we make veal.

Then we can address the issue of what our food sources should be and acceptable population levels.

Attalus 02-24-2003 06:45 PM

Why, Willow, Your font color has bled all over your post. I am complimented. So as not to be accused of spamming, I will ask what the EU policy on foie gras and real veal? :D

The prospective nations are Hungary, Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania, Cyprus, Lithuania, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Malta, Slovenia, Estonia, Poland, and Turkey.
