For all of you people with a 56K modem, i've got a question. I have one too, and i wanna know, how hard is it to play MP with one. How slow is everything?

Arledrian 01-29-2003 09:38 PM

Well, it is, understandably, considerably slower than playing with a cable or (A)DSL connection. Also, you might find that you're limited to playing with only two or three players maximum. Sometimes a 56k can't handle more players than that. I haven't played on one for very long, but the above I know to be true. Hope it kind of helps

I got a 56k modem, when playing MP it's very slow and laggy ( example, to pull out a sword, it will takes like a few minutes where it takes only seconds for some ), thus you'll likely be a target for PvP. sometimes the screen goes totally black as the connection get disconnected.

IIRC I could play Starcraft a few years ago on Battle.net with my old 56k just fine...

Would Warcraft 3 have any problems?

it should be okay if you use US servers but definitely not Asia servers.

My guess would be SecretMaster.

SecretMaster, you may be able to, I am unsure- but Jeffi, Starcraft wouldn't be a problem as it isn't a huge memory-guzzling game- still, you could but try it, SM.

Okay thanx.

as long as the game isnt an FPS you should do fine... RPGs run well over it... I recomend PSO and Earth and Beyond too... those are the smoothest running 56k Games I know of...

I have a 56k modem and most MP games work fine. I was playing Red Alert 2 this morning and it was working perfectly. My brother plays BG2 online all the time and he says it runs just as well as single player.

I play Unreal Tournament 2003 and Counterstrike online and there is a bit of lag but they're still playable.

Somewhere in this group of threads is a reference to checking the real speed you have with your modem or DSL. That might give you some comfort or doubt on playing on line.

I used to play NWN with my 56k and it worked of a way... But you would sometimes get very bad lag. My advice? Play Delta force (The Original) Online. That works well with any amount of players.. Great fun

BG and BG2 play great with 2 or 3 players, as long as your 56k gets good performance (relatively), and is stable.

Well, ever since my dad got a new computer with a new modem (still 56k), our connection has been 31.2bps, never lower or higher. But on the other computer, we were usually 38bps or 42. Not 42, but 42000, I'm just taking the first 2 numbers.

Harkoliar 02-09-2003 07:33 PM

i have a 56k but my service internet provider sucks.. it is 1/4 slower and if your using cable it is like 56k modem here.. sigh...
