-   -   Cricket - Hayden best batsman in the world? (http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83910)

Currently Australia's Matthew Hayden is ranked the worlds best. DO you agree with this? How do you assess the worlds best batmen? Who else would you nominate?

I'm a Hayden fan so I'm as pleased as punch he's getting these accolades. Especially since he had to fight to get into the team. So many criticised he technique, but he kept piling up huge scores for Queensland. Double century after double century, year after year. I'm glad he's reaping it now.

But does anyone know what Slater and Elliot, (at one time people holding his spot) are doing? I'm out of the loop here in NYC. :(

Slater is back in the NSW team, doing okay I think. Elliot is also playing domestic, he was also in the Australia A team that played some 3 day matches against England. I think he got injured though (or hit with a ball? ) which was bad luck in the one in Tasmania.

I'm thrilled the Bat is finally getting the recognition he deserves! We went to the first day of the gabba test and saw him get his century, was fantastic. And in ODIs as well, as soon as he was given a real go, not the switch around never-know-whether-you're-in-or-out baloney with Mark Waugh last summer, he's excelled there as well. He was a shoo-in for all 3 awards, best limited overs player, best test player and Allan Border medal at the ceremony last night. Interestingly he didn't get any!

I say the best batsman is Barry Bonds. He hits the tar out of the ball

If it's another ballgame, and the ballgame is baseball, then he'd be a batter not a batsman. ;)

Micheal Atherton

hang on he's retired

then I guess it's micheal Vaughn... the stats prove it. and didn't billy bonds play for west ham? :D

On the subject of Matt - yes he is the world's best batsman, and I won 25 dollars from the one expat Brit in the office who wanted to bet me that Hayden would average less than 50 for the Ashes series. LOL - I would have taken the bet at 60 if he had upped the ante ;)

And he's a Queenslander

Sorry to but in on this self congratulational slugfest but the best batsman in the world at the moment has to be Michael Vaughan. Averaging slightly over 50 in his career he scored 633 runs in the recent Ashes (our urn) series at an average of 63.3. In addition he scored seven (that's SEVEN) test centuries during 2002.

Who's "dementional" know ;) :D .

The latest test rankings updated at Jan 6 has Vaughan at 2 (hmm, another ranking system has him at 6) and Hayden at 1 - the ODI rankings have Hayden at 1 and Vaughan at DNB (well, outside the top ten anyway).

And to finally crush the argument (not like you to miss geting the facts right me old matey ;) ) :

Quote:

2002 Calendar Year Test Highest Batting Averages

ML Hayden 11 matches, 17 innings, 1 NO, 1160 runs, 197 HS, 72.5 avg, 6 100's, 3 50's

MP Vaughan 14 matches, 26 innings, 2 NO, 1481 runs, 197 HS, 61.7 avg, 6 100's, 2 50's
Hmmm - just checked the list of all 100's scored in the calender year and your bloke is only credited with six - that's SIX (or if you are from the "shakies" SEX) centuries for Vaughan.

So looking at that, Vaughan got his centuries in 26 innings - a century every 4.3 innings batted. Big Matty got his 6 (note - that number keeps cropping up doesn't it) centuries in 17 innings, or an average of 2.8 innins per ton.

Mike got more runs - but he played more matches, and his team failed more often so he had more "at bats". I suppose I could point out that Matt had more 50's as well, and that there are two more nasty Aussies rated above Mikey on the 2002 averages - but that would just be rubbing salt into the gaping wound .

C'mon Donut - I know you are out there - just wanting to hear your interpretation of the statistics

Well bugger me - he's got me on a technicality! Vaughan scored his 7th century in Sydney on the 4th January 2003.

Though it pains me to say it Davros - Hayden didn't score his runs against Shiney and Glenda! He scored them against our second string bowlers.

Davros 01-29-2003 11:41 AM

Huh - wah - you mean you have "first string bowlers" - when did this happen?

Not like you to make excuses either is it - that is something you usually take me to task for, isn't it - tsk tsk :D .

Still, it is like me to make excuses, and I notice that your Mr Vaughan became much more prolific when the Sheik of Tweak dislocated his shoulder and missed those last two matches.

Oh - and one last parting shot before I go rest my weary head - how is something that did not happen in a calender year a "technicality" ;) - I think the work you were searching for was "error" :D

Donut 01-29-2003 11:45 AM

Perhaps we should stick to the current year then:

Vaughan 183 runs at an average of 91.50
Hayden 17 runs at an average of 8.50
