Obvious, but stay in bed dude, sleep as much as possible. And don't hang around those penguins all the time, they're used to the cold, and you're clearly not.

Sounds like what I had a couple of years ago. When I went to the doctor, she said I had an ear infection and a mild case of strep throat. I had to take 2 different prescriptions. You should check with your doctor just in case it's not a regular cold or flu.

sleep sleep sleep sleep and drink a LOT of water

GokuZool 01-10-2003 04:07 AM

Put some vapour inhalent into a bowl of steaming water. This helps clear the nose so you don't sniffle.

Drink LITRES of hot tea, preferably with honey and gingerpowder. Drinking a lot will make it easier for your body to cleanse itself, and ginger with honey helps against colds and sore throats. Try to stay in bed and sleep as much as possible, sleep really is the best medicine. Vitamin C pills (1000mg) are good as well.
I hope you'll feel better soon SomeGuy, I really feel for you. A bad cold's only a small thing but it can sure make you feel awful.

Paracetamol or aspirin will ease fever, sore throats and general pains. A full dose four times a day helps to keep fever and pains away. If your throat is sore, dissolve soluble aspirin in some water and gargle for a few minutes before swallowing. The local effect of the aspirin on the throat adds to the pain relief. Many cold remedies sold at pharmacies contain aspirin or paracetamol as one of their ingredients. NOTE: Children 12 and under should not be given aspirin to swallow or gargle. They can be given paracetamol liquid (Calpol, Disprol, etc).

As Gokuzool said nose congestion may be relieved by steam inhalations. A traditional routine is to add a couple of menthol crystals to a bowl of steaming water. Bend over the bowl and put a towel over your head and bowl to capture the steam. Breath the steamy vapour for 5-10 minutes, 3-4 times a day. The menthol crystals are not essential, it is the steam that does the trick. Decongestant sweets, nose-sprays, vapours, drops or medicines may ease a congested nose. Ask your pharmacist for advice. They should not be used for more than 5 days at a time. If used longer they may cause a swelling inside the nose causing it to be more congested. Some cold/decongestant medicines also contain ingredients that can make you drowsy. They may help with sleep if taken at bedtime.

And as Mel said drink plenty of fluid. A fever may cause extra body fluid to be lost by sweating. Having low body fluids (mild dehydration) can make you feel more tired and may cause a headache. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids. Hot drinks are often soothing too.

Most colds do not cause complications. Occasionally the mucus can travel to the chest, sinuses or ears which may lead to chest infections, sinusitis or ear infections. Consult a doctor if cold symptoms do not ease within a week or if you suspect a complication.

oh yeah I got that still but it was really bad about 2 weeks ago: My advice is Tylenol Cold.. and drink lots and lots of stuff, flavored stuff if you have to, just dont drink sodas. 7 up and Sprite are Ok though...

Mel had some good advice.

As others have said, drink LOTS of water. I would like to contradict some people and say avoid ALL soft drinks and teas. Tea, coffee, and most soft drinks are diuretics, and dry you out. Soup is ok when you're hungry, but won't be enough to help your system flush itself out.

As for other cold remedies, Buckleys tastes like....well I don't know what it tastes like, but it's awful. :D It does work, though.

Coffee definitely does, but as long as you avoid black tea, I don't think tea dehydrates you. Try green tea* or herb teas (especially ginger tea, tea with honey, chamomile, sage). Caffeine is not such a bad thing BTW, some painkillers contain small doses of coffeine and vitamin C to help battle colds and flus. And the hotness of the tea relieves a sore throat like nothing else does, or so I have always thought. Another thing you should try to do is eat enough! When your throat is sore you probably don't feel like it, but after a few swallows your thraot will get numbed, especially if the food is nice and hot. Don't take strongly spiced foods, but just a wholesome dinner will make you feel a lot better.
I've had a chronic illness for about two years and due to the lowered resistance, last year I went from one flu to another. I think I spent most of the previous winter recovering from colds, catching new ones and moping around the house sniffling. Not nice. :D

*The White blood corpuscles (WBC) are generally responsible for fighting any infection present in the body. Both polyphenols and Vitamin C which are present in green tea help to increase the WBC count thereby increasing, immunity to colds and diseases. Tea and Heart Research) suggestes that any diet rich in antioxidants is capable of stimulating circulation, strengthening the blood vessels and decreasing the cholessterol levels. Tea being rich in antioxidants can thus help in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Or so they say ;)

The only thing that will get rid of a virus is time and a healthy immune system. To speed a cold, make sure you are eating enough, drinking plenty of water based beverages, getting all your vitamins and minerals, and getting plenty of rest. This makes sure your body has all the tools it needs to do it's job with a minimum of stress. Other than that, you can treat the symptoms to keep you comfortable. Everyone has their own favorite treatments. From OTC remedies to herbs and homeopathy. Even eating certain foods. Basically, just do whatever makes you feel better. Personally, I like doping up on NyQuil, applying Vick's Vaporub generously, using 4-Way nasal spray to keep the sinuses clear, and drinking hot steaming herbal tea blends all day. Then I lay on the couch and watch TV and sleep.

Go to the store and buy some high concentrated vitamin A tablets... they work pretty damn well... That or a 1/5 of Scotch does wonders as well!

But it's gotta be a pure malt, none o' that Johnny Walker crap!

There are mane symptomatic treatments out there as you can see. ;) Some have even been under clinical trials. I´ll put some here. Zinc has been reported to quicken up ones recovery. Tea can help. Especially if it has Echinacea in it. Echinacea has also been reported to help against cold. All you can do is to try and get some relief from the symptoms. Keep yourself warm, no matter if you inhale or drink. Instead of buying lozenge or cough drops, try placing a pea (or the like) beneath your tongue. That´s probably the most efficient way to get rid off a sore throat. ;)

Oh and tea is a diuretic as well as coffe. But then so is sugar and regular salt. ;)

Actually, after posting I was thinking you might have meant herbal teas - those are definitely much better than black tea.

I agree, caffeine in small doses is good but the trouble is, too many people (especially here in Canada) drink far too much caffeine in their diet.

It's actually a requirement in the mechanics licence - you have to learn how to consume vast quantities of coffee! :D
