Jafin 06-29-2001 12:43 AM

I keep getting killed by spiders! I'm at the beginning of Chapter 4 in the second Cloakwood forest area and I keep running into those tangling traps and some huge/giant spiders slowly eat my party away!
If it helps in any way, I'll post my party so you know what I can do:
Main Character Jafin Half-Elf Fighter Lv. 2 Thief Lv. 3
Ajantis Paladin Lv. 3
Khalid Fighter Lv. 4
Jaheira Fighter/Druid Lv. 3
Xan Enchanter Lv. 3
Kivan Ranger Lv. 3

Please help me! I thank you in advance.

One thing you might want is some potions of free action. That will prevent you from getting tangled. And any spells that protect you from this.

Where do you get potions of free action? Can you buy them in a temple?

Yes you can buy them at a temple. And I believe from the mage in the one area west of Naskel

Ok, so all I gotta do is get the potions, use them near the areas with the traps and beat up the spiders. Thank you VERY much for your help! I was about to go on a major level gaining expedition, probably for the next several days with the XP necessary for gaining levels in this game. I'll go try that and let you know how it goes.

Once you get to the begining of that map use the potions befroe you trigger the traps. And if you can find a ring of free action that will help also but I do not remember where one is.

Your party looks to be a fairly low level. You may want to explore other areas on your map before doing Cloakwood - it will get worse later otherwise

you are WAY too low - I was level 7/8 in cloakwood <OVERKILL!!!!> but i did durlags tower first.<SLIGHT SPOILER> Dont waste your money on potions, just send the person with the best save vs spells forward then let the trap go its duration, save and move on
PS: you cant detect the traps, even with the cleric spell

Err, one hates to disagree but you *can* definetly detect the traps with a thief.

The tactic that worked for me was to have my mage cast invisibility on my thief (player character, even now being fattened for TOB!). Then he just went on ahead: got most of the traps and those he didn't, well, if they can't see you they can't attack you!

As I said I used my mage to cast the spell, but if you have a couple of invisibility potions and an oil of speed, that'll do the trick (due to the duration of potions) or even have your mage use a scroll with invisibility on it.

Or use summoning spells/wands (animal summoning, animate dead, monster summoning) and let them set of the trap for you.

Jafin, when did you say you started this game?Have you consumed any food and water! I just finished chapter 1 last night and I started last week!Well I try to get 2 good hours in a day. Have you had a full party the hole time? I am at around 12,000 experience for my Character and my druid ladie freind, Jaheria, close to the same. These are the only two. Are you having to change the cd's like hot cakes on a grill?

Jafin,

Consider exploring the other areas and try to get at least lvl 5+. As Lord Shield said it will only get harder later on. I cleared all the areas out that I could before doing the bandit camps then Cloakwood Forests. I would work on your Lockpicking and Find trap skills the most. A skill of around 50-70 will find the traps often. A little trick to finding traps: seems to find them faster if while highlighted that you switch out of your traveling screen to another such as map or inventory then back to traveling screen. The traps seem to show up faster and more often. Good luck and good hunting.

I finally got through Cloakwood! I couldn't find any potions of free action anywhere and I didn't want to wait for the spell. I just sent my thief forward slowly to disarm them. It worked fairly well. I'm in the mines now and working my way through. I haven't had too much trouble in there, yet anyway. And where is Durlag's Tower? I heard mention of it in the game but I can't find it. Help appreciated

Billikins the Bold 07-03-2001 07:59 AM

Durlags Tower is in the South East of the map, sort of below Firewine Bridge, IIRC.

You're best of leaving it till the end of chapter 6 though, cos its tough! Once you've completed chapter 6 go to Ulgoths Beard in the extreme North East... there 3 quests open up for you. A thought occurs though: you do have Tales of the Sword Coast (TotSC) installed don't you? Because Ulgoths Beard and Durlags Tower are part of that expansion pack.

Good luck and keep on fightin' through...

Ah. Apologies, only just read your other post. Yup, you need TotSC to get Durlags Tower: IMHO its worth it!
