Smeagol...the early years...

Attalus 12-30-2002 12:07 AM

Erm, Larry, that doesn't look like anything that I saw, but, what do I know? Regards,

Nanobyte 12-30-2002 12:07 AM

He looks somewhat like whatshisface from The Two Towers. I'm not familiar with any of the names, but the saboteur in the king's castle.

Larry_OHF 12-30-2002 12:13 AM

You mean wormtongue. yeah, you're right...it looks like him.

All I know is that I went to my favorite moive previews website, and they provided that link to that picture, naming it a smeagol/gollum pic. I have read elsewhere that Pete Jackson was going to portray more of Smeagol in the next film so that viewers can relate what happened to him in relation to what may happen to Frodo...and show the bond that those two share by being ringbearers. Thus, we get to see Smeagol kill his friend and stuff like the book explained.

Nanobyte 12-30-2002 12:16 AM

Oh dear. I know Samwise turns out to be a ringbearer as well, but don't tell me Frodo kills him (I know you're not saying this directly, but they do share a connection)

I agree. He looks somewhat like Wormtongue from the Two Towers.

Although Gollum did resemble a hafling when he was younger did he not?

Smeagol was also a ring bearer for a long time. He killed his friend when he found the ring. Its all in the books.

And he does look like Grima in that pic.

SomeGuy 12-30-2002 03:07 PM

Hehe. This reminds me of the split personality scene from Two Towers.(very funny) LOL. He does look like that freak wormtongue

Bardan the Slayer 12-30-2002 06:36 PM

Exxon is right. If i remember, at one point, Gandalf actually describes Smeagol as coming "from a people not too unlike [Frodo] in appearance.

He wasn't a hobbit, but was something similar.

*scans The Hobbit for clues

Bruce The Aussie 12-30-2002 06:50 PM

in one part of either LotR or the hobbit (can't remmember). it calls gollum "one of the river folk" if thats a clue as to what he was.

It has to be in LoTR, probly fellowship, because Gollum's past isnt explained in The Hobbit. Remember, when the hobbit was written, the rings only power was invisbility, and Gollum was just a mysterious creature. The ring's true power and history, including Gollum were not revealed until later.

Atrayu 12-30-2002 08:12 PM

Did Smeagol change that much from almost being tortured to death I wonder.? Strange but cool. Poor thing.- Atrayu

Smeagol; one of the 'River Folk' - or the Stoors. The Stoor clan is one of the three original Hobbit 'clans'; Stoors, Fallowhides and Harfoots. The Stoors are the ancestors of, for example, the Brandybuck family (note the Brandybucks have an uncommon affinity with boats). It is recorded that some Stoors - living nearby Rivendell - fled south and west when the elven fortress was attacked during the wars of Angmar vs. Arnor (the Witch-King stirring up trouble again), and that some of these hobbit-like folk settled over the mountains, upon the Gladden Fields, north of Lorien (the site of Isildur's death). Smeagol must have been one of these.

The picture is, indeed, Smeagol and his friend Deagol, boating. That I know. I thought this was edited footage from Two Towers; now, I'm not so sure.

That is a stricking image of Mr. Wormtounge!

Piestrider 12-30-2002 11:25 PM

Wow! smeagol is even uglier as a hobbit like "thing". Amazing.
BTW Larry, have you found any other preview sites for LOTR?
I'm dying to see pics from the Return of the King.
