So what are yall doing tomorrow for Thanksgiving? Making your own turkey or visiting relatives? For me, this year I decided I'm staying home, I've gone a-visiting to relatives' houses for at least 6 consecutive years now. I want to have the four days at home and milk it for all its worth LOL. The secretary that has worked with me at my job for 12 years has retired as of today. So I have to run the entire office by myself until we hire someone else, and even then whoever we hire won't have a clue re many things so will be mostly used as a typist. So in other words, these next four days mean a lot to me LOL, the last relaxation days I will have for a long time! So I'm going to be lounging tomorrow, watching TV, popping in turkey in oven, playing Dungeon Siege now and then, basting turkey and starting side dishes, posting on IWs, making raspberry daqeuris (sp?), playing a bit more Dungeon Seige now alcohol emboldened, posting on IWs, now alcohol emboldened, watching more TV, taking out turkey and finally eating it, back to Dungeon Seige, then IWs, then.... :D

We just had a small family Thanksgiving dinner tonight. Tomorrow it's making the rounds at different family members homes. Good thing I like turkey.

LOL, making rounds is cool if you don't have to drive so far (like I always have to). And it takes at least a good week before you truly get sick of turkey, so rounds is good, the best thing about "rounds" are the homemade side dishes!

Nanobyte 11-27-2002 09:34 PM

You been reserving that turkey antryg?

Aelia Jusa 11-27-2002 09:37 PM

Sounds like fun LadyZ . Hope you worked out the perfect gift for your secretary

Sazerac 11-27-2002 09:38 PM

LOL, LadyZekke! I can see I'll be needing to get a few more Dungeon Siege maps up for you at my walkthrough site. ;)

Well, I'm cooking tomorrow, even thought it's just my wife and I. She's going to make turkey soup from the leftovers, and I will probably do both sandwiches from my leavings, and take Cloudbringer's excellent suggestion about making homemade turkey pot pies. (Tx again loads, Cloudy, for the recipe!)

Yes, I'm pretty much staying "in" this weekend. Going to be cold, and I have no desire to brave the crowds on Friday. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, even to those who don't celebrate it; I'm thankful for you guys, too.

DragonMage 11-27-2002 09:41 PM

WOW! That's gonna be rough, LadyZ! *hugs*

Definitely enjoy your time off!

I only get tomorrow off, so I cooked the turkey last night and am working on the rest of the dishes right now. I will pack it all up and head over to my Mom's tomorrow. We'll kill time until lunch, then kick back and watch the game. Tradition in our family. Not a lot of hubbub, but nice just the same.

Cloudbringer 11-27-2002 09:45 PM

I've got a semi-icy Butterball turkey in my fridge right now! Gonna have turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, glazed carrots, white-bread stuffing (from scratch!) gravy and rolls. Then for later we have pumpkin pie, gingerbread and pastries. MMMMM.. love those four day weekends!

I'll be celebrating with my best friend and of course, Jim.

Ronn_Bman 11-27-2002 09:47 PM

We'll eat at my wife's grandmother's at 11AM, and then at my grandmother's at 2PM! Full bellies will definately be the order of the day...lol. We'll be home around 4PM, and watch some Christmas videos or programs on television.

I usually avoid going out on the Friday after Thanksgiving day, but this year my wife and I, our kids, and my parents are going to see "Santa Clause 2; The MRS Clause" at 1PM.

Saturday and Sunday I'll be working, but I was very happy to end up with tomorrow and Friday off this year. Not just happy, I'm thankful. ;) :D

I hope you all have a great and safe loooong holiday weekend.

Sazerac 11-27-2002 09:48 PM

One of these days I'm going to have to try white-bread dressing. Everyone down here does cornbread dressing and it's so dry and nasty, I can't stand it.

As is, I'm making dirty rice with andouille sausage for our "dressing", if you can call it that. I'm not stuffing the turkey with it, though. ;)

Cheers,
-Saz

No, I've been cloning it. Ever since the late and great party thread I've been working "here at Muppets Labs". I have 260 on my computer right now. Whenever I get hungry I just clone a turkey jpg and with a little Muppet magic I have a nice meal. Cajun deep fried tonight. uuuuhhhhmmmmm...turkey

Just a note: cornbread dressing doesn't have to be dry.

My recipe (which has been a hit for the last 10 years) involves homemade cornbread, homemade biscuits combined on the order of 2/3 to 1/3, add a bag of store bought dressing, add four cans of unsalted chicken broth and add in the turkey juices plus 6 eggs. Let it all sit for about 15 minutes so that all the liquid can mix well with the dry. If the dressing looks too moist, it's perfect. This will ensure the dressing is still moist when done. ;)

Actually my boss picked out something, a crystal serving bowl, pretty expensive too! So I worried what to get her for nothing. My boss made it sound like it was all up to me last week, then turns around and gets the gift himself!

Jeffi0 11-27-2002 10:02 PM

My thanksgiving was ages ago... Americans have Thanksgiving at a weird time. It is supposed to be thanking for a harvest, but the harvest time was October and September. It was snowing and -12 C today, which would NOT be a good time to harvest. ;)

Hey that sounds cool too Brenbren! You got your turkey already done! Ack I only hope mine is thawed out by tomorrow LOL! Not going to even ask you what your side dishes are, as they will make me hungry and envious LOL

Sounds just like the same dinner I have planned Sis! Except for the glazed carrots, didn't think of that (dammit!). And no gingerbread or pastries either, just pumpkin pie. I wanna have Thanksgiving at your house! :D

Ah yes, make the rounds, then flop like twice baked potatoes onto your couch at home and watch movies, the classic Thanksgiving ;)

Jeffi0 11-27-2002 10:12 PM

I made a gingernread house once. Althouh "completely and utterly mauled" might be a better verb (or bunch of verbs). It was a terrible mess... The icing got everywhere and wouldn't stick to the gingerbread, just to the table and my clothes. At least we got to eat the thing...

Sazerac 11-27-2002 10:17 PM

A recent poll at CNN (for what THAT's worth  ) indicated that about 60 percent of Americans plan to stay home for Thanksgiving this year. Granted, it's not very scientific, but seems like a lot of people are getting fed up with the rush and bustle and the tied-up traffic and transportation systems, especially on the holidays. I went to Louisiana last weekend to celebrate an early Thanksgiving with my mom since there was no way I was going to travel during the holiday rush. Would you believe that even then, it took me two hours to get from Denton to Mesquite, which is 50 miles away?? That's how bad the Dallas traffic is with all the construction. I swear, Dallas is like this huge diseased heart with all of its arteries clogged up to where hardly anything can get through. Pfeh!

So, that's one reason I plan to "hole in" this Turkey day. That and I really do just enjoy being home.

Hey, at least you tried! I've never tried making a gingerbread house myself. Sounds like it would be very difficult.

I know the feeling you're talking about. Similar thing happened when I tried to do a "taffy pull" last year. The taffy never got stiff and it got over everything. What a mess! LOL but it tasted good.

Cloudbringer 11-27-2002 10:23 PM

HAHAHA! I make enough stuff so we don't do much cooking for the whole 4 days! I'm going shopping on Friday with my best friend so Jim's stuck minding the cats and watching football. We're gonna watch the Muppet Christmas movie in the evening on Friday.

Here's the carrot recipe:

Glazed Carrots
1 tsp margarine
1 cup slivered carrots, blanched
1 tsp granulated brown sugar
1/8 tsp powdered mustard
dash of hot sauce, dash salt

In small skillet, heat margarine until bubbly and hot. Add remaining ingredients and saute, stirring occasionally, until carrots are tender-crisp, about 5 minutes.

This makes two small servings so I usually double it. [img]graemlins/ladyhearts.gif[/img]

I've never made a gingerbread house either! Ack I'd want to eat the walls I was constructing LOL! Oh and "snowy" walls (icing) LOL! :D

Not particularly spectacular on the sides, LadyZ. ;)

Potato Salad (don't know why we do that at Thanksgiving, but there it is ;) ) for my Dad
Mashed taters with giblet gravy for me and Mom
English peas

for dessert:

Pumpking Pie (made with honey instead of sugar)
Apple Pie (made with a scrumptious blend of apples bought fresh in Ellijay and cooked down - 2/3 Arkansas Black, 1/3 Winesap, cooked down with fresh apple cider, spices and - again - honey)

There! *hands Wendy a bib for the drool*

;)

I've been cooking all week, having my parents and a few friends over. Tomorrow I get started at 6am to finish everything up! I think next year I'm going to pick a less ambitious menu.

LOL! Well, all you do is add about 1/4 cup less honey than sugar. ;)

But if you want, mail me your street addy and I'll ship you some - and some apple, too, if you'd like. ;)

Ladyzekke 11-27-2002 11:12 PM

LOL, Rokken you are going for the full fledge Thanksgiving!! Oh man, I feel for you. I did it ONCE, and only once LOL. I had recipes coming outta my arse and the 9 foot long table was completely covered. Was way too much for only 8 people, and one guy got severe heartburn from eating too many devilled eggs LOL.

I wish you luck Rokken, it's a hard row too hoe, but worth it just for the fame, just for ONE time (you'll understand soon enough re that) :D

Actually the only traditional dishes are the turkey, gravy, and from scratch pumpkin pies. Other then that I've made Cranberry-ginger relish, curried nuts and raisins, Jerusalem artichoke gratin, and sherried shrimp bisque. Tomorrow is going to be hell, lol.

Sazerac 11-27-2002 11:32 PM

Whoa, Rokenn! That's a gourmet Thanksgiving!

Good for you!

Lord Starshadow 11-28-2002 12:59 AM

I'm heading off to my grandmother's (on my mother's side) house today. My mother has a bunch of brothers and sisters, so everyone (aunts, uncles, older cousins) will be bringing something to add to the turkey my grandmother is making. So, there'll be lots of food and lots of people. Should be fun.

I wish I could make a gingerbread house. But the trouble is, I eat the ingredients before I can make anything out of it! :D
