Here’s a bit of guidance on a topic that has become visible recently.

When you are contemplating posting a long article verbatim in a thread, or using such an article to provoke discussion, please consider the following:-

1)Could the whole thing be better represented by a link and a short comment. Not only does this save space, but it ensures that the originator gets properly attributed.

2)If you feel you need to quote the whole of an article, please make sure you give proper acknowledgement of the author and/or source. This should avoid any possibility of IW being accused of republishing copyright material.

It all boils down to commonsense at the end of the day. Just make sure you give a bit of thought when posting and everything will be fine [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img]

Thanks, Mouse. I just posted virtually the same thing in the Don't Ask, Don't Tell thread (GMTA!) ;) I think we're all capable of handling this. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Hi Mouse [img]graemlins/happywave.gif[/img] . Not questioning any of your comments but wondered if you perhaps could use TL´s new post as an example. I mean he lists authors and where it was published and provided a link. So is that a good example? Or could it have been improved? [img]smile.gif[/img]

Edit: Well you can give me some pointers too Saz [img]smile.gif[/img]

If I may chime in my [img]graemlins/twocents.gif[/img] among you great and might mods. . .

*humbly genuflects*

Then let me say that I think linking is better than pasting large sections of text. Now, I happen to be the worst offender on this issue, so I'll note that I only cut-paste lengthy articles when it's a site someone must sign up to. I tried linking, and folks requested I paste. Though the site was free, and I see no harm in signing up, I nevertheless cut-paste long articles to garner discussion. Hope this offends no one. :D

[edit: Oh, and I try to always remember to cite, either way]

No problem, Mouse. It won't effect me, I never post meaningful threads that use intelligent articles. :D

Sazerac 11-18-2002 01:43 PM

Posting an article is ok, just cite the work! [img]smile.gif[/img] Also, give some indication as to where the cited work ends and your comments begin. For example:

setting the cited work off in [ quote ] [ qb ] tags:

Quote:

Cited work cited work cited work cited work
putting a line above and under the citation

__________________________
"Cited work cited work cited work cited work..."
__________________________

or changing the font color and possibly adding italics:

<font color="#cccccc">"Cited work cited work cited work..."</font>

It also helps linking back to the original source, even if you are copy/pasting.

Cheers,

So using TL´s post as an example the article should have been inside a quote tag? And the authors in the beginning? I take it you don´t mean that every person interviewed in the article should be in quote tags or is that what you´re saying? Maybe I´m just stupid here, I´m sure your explanation is perfectly simple Saz...

I tend to copy the entire article myself (with proper links to the source of the info, of course), though mostly because there's always the possibility that the source of the information will go offline or has some serious load problems; and just trust me that it happens a lot. ;)

Most pleased to see this! [img]smile.gif[/img] I'd brought the subject up some time ago in the Mod forum. So I'm really glad to see your thread here, Mouse!

TL, your posts come with appropriate references so no worries! I know some people balk at actually having to click once more on a link ( ;) ) but that's the prefered method of showing a long article. Still, if one cuts/pastes, it's a good idea to do what you and some others do- list the author and your source. I also very much appreciate it when a poster makes it obvious where the quoted material ends and his/her own opinions start up. [img]smile.gif[/img] (Good point, Saz!)
