JERUSALEM –– Security guards on board an El Al flight have foiled a hijacking attempt, Israel radio says.

The flight was headed from Tel Aviv to Istanbul, Turkey.

Officials at the Istanbul airport say the hijacker was overpowered by security guards and no one was hurt. The suspect is in custody. The plane landed safely in Istanbul.

Was this the big thing they were threatening?

Beaumanoir 11-17-2002 05:00 PM

*Sigh*

In a way, I do hope this was the big thing they were plotting, because now, their main plan has been ruined, .

I've heard some weird things about an attempt to hit the London subways with gas. Can someone provide a link with the full story of this ?

True_Moose 11-17-2002 05:08 PM

Well, they sent out a big letter calling for attacks on every ally of the US as well as the US itself...they specifically named, amongst others, Canada, Australia and the UK.

I think that this was probably less related to Al-Qaeda than to some wacko in the regional Israeli-Palestinian conflict. :(

Yea, I heard about that on the news. The Canadian government had made their own list of possible targets for terrorist attack after Sept. 11, they heightened security etc. and surprisingly, West Ed. wasn't in there!

Is it just me or have attpemted terrorist attacks increased latley..? Maybe I am just paying more attention now.

Slizerio 11-18-2002 12:58 AM

Yes, they have increased. Mainly because of the sucsess of 7-11.
They was a major attack in Japan seven years back where some cult released nerve gas, killing a dozen or so people and injuring hundreds more.

Yes, and it was bad of me to laugh out loud at your post and wake the dogs up. ;)

Ar-Cunin 11-18-2002 09:58 AM

Appently the hijacking wasn't one after all

According to Ha'aretz (israeli newspaper) it was 'just' a case of 'plane'-rage - and an argument between the Israeli-Arab passanger and the stewardess, because he had twice asked for a glass of water without getting it. He then threatened the stewardess with a pocket-knife - and was arrested by the El-Al security.

How he managed to get the knife onboard will be investigated.

johnny 11-18-2002 10:04 AM

Somehow i don't believe that story.

/)eathKiller 11-18-2002 11:02 AM

I would disagree as well but im too lazy to confirm weather its true or not so i'll just go along with it and say "Good for them..."

Horatio 11-18-2002 12:14 PM

*phew* heard about the London tube this morning. The police here get a lot of flak, but its stuff like this that people are all too ready to forget when wage issues come up

khazadman 11-18-2002 05:04 PM

He got a pocket knife on an El Al flight? Someone just lost their job with the airline.
