I'm wondering if you could recommend a particular destination and why? Cuba? Barbados? St.Kitts? Where is best?

Jeffi0 11-09-2002 09:29 PM

I went once years ago. We didn't go to a particular destination, but took a cruise ship that toured around the Caribbean. It was a lot of fun, but I guess it wouldn't be for someone who is seasick. It was a huge boat though (HUGE!) so I don't think that seasickness would be a problem.

Mack_Attack 11-09-2002 09:30 PM

I have been to the British Virgin Islands a few years back. We went on a sailing cruise. It was very nice. The water is blue and warm and the snorkling is awsome. But it is nice to have a boat there because there is so many islands to see. The beach are coral so they are not hot to walk on. The problem is that they take US$ and being Canadian it hurt the pocket book a little bit but I would go back again.

Naasau/Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Just incredible. The beaches were gorgeous and no one was on them! You can do pretty much anything in the Bahamas from there as it's a central location.

We spent our homeymoon on Jamaica. Loved it, the resort was plush. However, the country is very poor. It certainly made us reasses our priorities. If we go back to the Caribean I would really like to visit St. Lucia. It is a small island with two domant volcanos (the Pittons - or something like that) and actual rain forest that you can hike in (as I understand). however, I guess it depends on what you are looking for. So, what are you seeking?

As a side note, we have also considered a resort in Playa Del Carmen (Mexico) where you can snorkel through underwater caverns and take day trips to Mayan ruins. Very cool in my opinion.

I lived in Puerto Rico for three years. Phosphorescent Bay is a nice place in PR. St. Thomas and St. Croix have some beautiful beaches and all three islands have some crystal clear waters that you can see down 60 feet like looking through glass. I love the Islands :D

I cant say that I have been to the Caribbean, but it looks great in the movies!

I've been to Jamaica, and I endorse what OTP had to say. Most of the country is pretty depressed and crime rates are pretty high - I felt safer leaving there and walking the streets of NYC at night than I did in Kingston. The restorts at Mo bay (Montego), Negrile, and Ocha Rios are safe though, and extremely good, but you can't help feeling that you are amongst a conclave of "haves" surrounded by the "have nots".

I talk often to people from that part of the world, and this very topic (whereto holiday in the carribean) came up only last night over dinner. We are currently doing a technical audit in OZ with 2 people each from the Jamaica and Surinam plants, and one from St Croix, - they suggested that the better places were Barbados, Curacao, or St Kitts and Nevis.

WillowIX 11-10-2002 06:25 AM

As MagiK said St. Thomas is extremely beautiful Me and the hubby have also visited Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) and thatīs a cheaper alternative and also very beautiful and. My fav place was and still is St. Lucia! Itīs locted between Martinique and St. Vincent and isnīt overrunned by tourists. Amazing wildlife and amazing beaches! Getting there can be more troublesome though ;) We had to fly to Grenada and then sail to St. Lucia although I think you can fly there as well...

Lavindathar 11-10-2002 07:49 AM

I have been to:

Barbados,
Antigua,
Domincan Republic,
St Kitts & Nevis,
Barbuda
Guadeloupe,
Dominca,
Martinique,
St Lucia,
St Vincent,

That's em all me thinks!

They all really nice, I've spent most time in Barbados and the Domincan Republic......Barbados win's hands down. Lovely people, lovely place. Some of the sights are gorgeous too. There was this one cafe just outside Jamestown that we always used to go too....

GO TO BARBADOS!
I'd done all of this by the age of 15!

I'd have to say that of all the places I've been, St. John's in the US Virgin Islands is the prettiest. Great beaches, day sailing, and scubaing the finest in the world, even Oz.

Yorick 11-10-2002 05:56 PM

Much food for thought. Thanks.

Anyone else?

Redblueflare 11-10-2002 08:01 PM

Yeah i've been to the Carribean too, lived in good ol Guantanamo Bay for three years. Been to the Bahamas Kings-something The Atlantis was there a really *big* hotel. Watch out for strange taxi drivers though. And if you bring a lady friend make sure she knows how to say no. They like braiding hair. I never got to go Puerto Rico. Cruises in the Carribean are very nice. It's warm, and there's nothing better than taking a map under a palm in white sand. Do yourself a favor and stay away from GTMO. It's either A: to dry, B: to wet, and there's to many terrorists now anyway. ;)

I'm afraid I haven't been to Olympia, but would love to go. Alas the statue of Zeus by Pheidias is no longer there, and none of the copies survive either, that would have been a sight and a half! Greece is great, one of my favourite places in the world. If you were going to that part of Greece you could also take in the ancient site of Mystra, the huge theatre at Epidauros, Corinth, and possibly make your way north to the Sanctuary at Delphi! Buses to Athens should be easy enough from there as well but it takes a few hours, depends how long you wanted to go for.

MagiK 11-11-2002 12:16 PM

I don't remember the Statue of Zeus being one of the Seven Wonders... Lets see:
1. Hanging Gardens of Babylon
2. Colossus of Rhodes
3. Tower of Bable
4. The Lighthouse at Alexandria
5. The Great Pyramid

Ok I got 5 from memory....
ok I looked it up *sigh* Lere it is.

6. Statue of Zeus
7. Temple of Artemis

Wonder why those last two never stuck in my mind?

Sio, Im pretty sure all the wonders but the Great Pyramid are gone now.

Er.. Sorry Magik, Tower of Babel was not a wonder of the world!

The one you missed was the Mausoleum at Halicarnassos (modern day Bodrum, Turkey).

Sio, it's not there because it was destroyed centuries and centuries ago, no-one knows for sure what happened to it! The fact it was covered in gold didn't help its chances at survival. The only wonders that still exist are the Pyramids at Giza, and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, and the latter is in a bit of a state. The Faros lighthouse, Colossus of Rhodes, and Hanging Gardens are gone, location uncertain other than literary references. The Mausoleum is just a foundation, no-one knows for sure what it looked like.

You can still visit the Temple of Zeus and marvel at the reliefs, but the statue is no more.
It's a biblical story, Old Testament, personally I think it's an analogy about pride rather than a reference to an actual building so I don't think it really existed, but I expect others would disagree with that.

I don't know the bible too well being an atheist, but basically the story goes that a long long time ago everyone spoke the same tongue and they got together to build a big tower so they could climb to the top and be closer to/find out more about God. God destroyed the tower (on the basis that it was arrogant and faithless to think you could attempt to know God in this way or somesuch) and gave everyone different languages so they could never again plot to do such a thing.
