I wear glasses for distance vision. I don't have to wear them all the time but if I did, I could probably see a lot better ;) . So I'm thinking of getting contacts since I'm a bit vain and I don't really like wearing my glasses (even though they're pretty cool as glasses go - gucci! Heh :D )

But I don't know what type to get - soft, hard, disposable etc. I read an ad in a magazine about new ones you can leave in and sleep in for 30 days - anyone tried these? I have semi-sensitive eyes because of allergies; they are prone to being watery and itchy in certain weather and I try not to wear eye makeup often because they don't like the remover (even though it's for sensitive eyes).

Advice?

MagiK 11-04-2002 04:43 PM

Get LASIC, more expensive short term, but over the long haul I cannot tell you how great it is. My eyesight was 20/200 now its slightly better than 20/20 no glasses, no contacts and I am free after nearly 35 years of glasses and contacts the only glasses I need now are sunglasses!!!!!

GO LASIC!!! :D

Aelia Jusa 11-04-2002 04:49 PM

Is that laser eye surgery? Not really up on my eye-related acronyms ;)

Davros 11-04-2002 04:57 PM

Hi Darlin ,

I am inclined to agree with your first colourful respondant (swallows tongue in shock and horror ;) - that's twice this week - must be these pills.... :D ). Obviously the laser treatment is the biggest cost, but the success rates are high, and stories I am hearing have been pretty favorable.

I think your glasses are pretty cool and look good, but that is not what you were asking for. A mate from work who wears contacts has been much happier since switching to the soft ones.

Edited twice to correct the typos

That is what I belive he is referring to - if not..... well I am sure I can stand some correcting ;)

Aelia Jusa 11-04-2002 05:09 PM

Well I don't think I should expect my parents to pay for eye surgery for me. Maybe when I'm big and earning money myself ;)

I'm a bit worried about putting contacts in and such. I'm a big baby when it comes to my eyes; you should see me getting eye drops - it's embarrassing :D . You probably get used to it after a while don't you?

Dagorion 11-04-2002 05:11 PM

Well I also have to wear glasses but I cant really wear contacts because they bother my eyes (I get the same ichyness in the eyes that you do so you might be botherd by them too) and my brother also used those 30 day ones and ended up with an infected eye! (But it got better) It got infected because he did lots of tomato picking and there is HEAPS of chemicals and dust blowing around those damn farms. Anyway... If your curious I think you can get a free set of 30 day ones to try out or you could just get some one day disposables and see how you like those. ;)
Hope I helped.

Davros 11-04-2002 05:22 PM

Wouldn't hurt to just ask around about the price. It sounds like something that you will eventually do, and it may make more sense to both you and your parents to do it earlier rather than later. You could always make an agreement with them to repay the money when you are a "big girl and earning money" ;)

Davros 11-04-2002 05:24 PM

Woohoo - I am now a Ra - the sun shines out of my ........ well it looks like my head now - by all appearances ;) - you better get out the sunglasses now Aelia :D

Djinn Raffo 11-04-2002 05:33 PM

I went to get contacts and had a lot of trouble putting them in at first.. After several days though i became totally used to it and now have no problem whatsoever putting them in. If i leave them in to long though they become quite irritating. I stick to my glasses unless i'm playing hockey or swimming or something like that...

I use soft lens ones that are recommended as good for about a year. Put them in in the morning and out at night. Mine are much older than a year though and i don't wear them to often (as stated above). They tend to get very annoying if i leave them in more than five hours.

Aelia I'm sure your Guccis look quite sexy on you Hey how about a lingerie/gucci glasses pic? Err gotta go Davros is chasing me with a shotgun for some reason bye bye

Ronn_Bman 11-04-2002 05:40 PM

Contact lenses are great! I couldn't believe the improvement in vision when I first got them, and I loved not looking at life through a frame, which I'd done since I was 5 years old. Contact lenses certainly change the way you look at things. I'm not trying to be punny either! Well, I am, but it obviously isn't working, so....

LASIC is definately the way to go if it is possible. I was going to have it done this year, and already signed up at work through my medical reimbursement plan, but my wife decided that having her gall bladder removed was more important. She may have been right, but I don't see any better since she had it taken out.

Anyway, I'm saving up my money (and courage) right now, and I'm shooting for the Spring. ;)

If you can't afford it right now, or if you're one of the people LASIC can't help, I definately suggest daily wear soft contacts. Soft contacts are a dream. At least, they seemed like it to me after a generation of hard lenses.

For sensitive eyes, I don't know that I'd suggest monthly wear soft lenses. Actually, I don't like the idea of monthly wear at all. Some here will probably disagree, but I just don't see the need to wear them while I sleep. I also remember some of the first weekly wear lenses from years ago that were suppose to be safe but caused problems including, but not limited to, eye infections.

For some eye disorders, doctors do prefer hard lenses, but if you can avoid them, do it. Hard lenses are tough to adjust to because of the initial(substantial) discomfort that only goes away gradually. If your eyes are sensitive, hard lenses can/will be problematic. Trust me, I wore them for 20 years. Your eyes do get used to them over time but with especially sensitive eyes, it will be tough.

After wearing hard contacts for 20 years, I suddenly lost my ability to wear them. My eyes, over the period of about a year(probably longer but I didn't pay attention), became too dry to wear them comfortably more than one or two hours at a time. That made them worthless to me because I'm blind without them. That happened after I'd worn them for 18 hours a day, every day since the early 80's. My doctor did some tests and basically decided that my eyes were just changing as I got older.

Even though soft lenses are great, I'm wearing my glasses more now than ever because my eyes are drier (I didn't even own a pair of glasses during the 90s). I can wear my soft lenses for 8 to 12 hours, but not being able to wear them all day has made me lazy. That's another reason I'm looking to LASIC surgery.

Ronn I'm willing to perform surgery on you VERY cheap! I have all kinds of tools

Sorry for posting then leaving you hanging for explanations. I had to drive home form work. Anyway Yes Davros is quite correct LASIC is a laser eye procedure, I had it done a year ago, there was no pain at all, just had to look at a bright light for a few seconds is all and ...well the results are...fabulous, I couldn't recommend it more. Up fron the eye surgery would be more expensive (some health insurance policies cover part of the cost) but your contacts will cost you more in a few years. The younger you are when you have it doen the more you will save and obviously the longer you will have the freedom. However I would wait till your in your early 20's or so, just to make sure your eyes have stabilized, ask the doctor. Hope that helps.

Davros, don't worry, I have found that agreeing with disagreeable people is not terminal I agree with some interesting people all the time

No worried B-Man you dont feel any pain at all. The drops they put in your eyes numbs them completely, the hard part is that you will have a rather bright light shined in your eye for up to a minute (for each eye)
your eye is held in place so it doesnt movemuch and the doc can control things in case you eye does jerk a bit. Just make sure someone can drive you home because things are blurry for about a day or so. I was able to see just fine about 18 hours later.

Good advice Magik. I believe there is a minimum recommended age for this type procedure because of the developement that occurs throughout the teenage years.

I'll agree to let you do it on 3 conditions.

1.) You don't ask or accept advise from the testicular surgeon regarding the surgery ON MY EYES!

2.) You accept BCBS of NC. (Pretending to accept like my local physician is fine)

3.) You must drink heavily before, during, and after the procedure.

These are my conditions. What say you?
Agreed, I'll set up some drop lights and can perform the procedure at...hmmm....around 10:30 friday night :D Also to save money instead of renting a table we can use the hood of my roommates 68 Firebird if that ok. I'll knock some off the bill

I am in my early 20s ;)

Thanks heaps Ronn and Magik for all that . I'm going to make an appointment with the optometrist after my exams so I'll see what he thinks, and what surgery might cost. We do have health insurance but I don't know if elective surgery is covered. It is pretty annoying having to haul my glasses around everywhere, and you know what they say - men don't make passes at girls in glasses ;) . Except LoA apparently :D

Ronn_Bman 11-04-2002 06:28 PM

Agreed!

I'd prefer you use a 76 FB hood but based on the cost savings, I'd be a fool not to complain.

PS. I'd prefer you use a new blade on the recipricating saw. If you can't supply one, can I get one from Lowe's and bring it with me?

LOL, for genenral anesthesia, I would recommend a bottle of Wild Turkey... oh, wait, we don't want to get started on that again, do we? ;)

Lord of Alcohol 11-04-2002 06:58 PM

Ronn theres a blade called "The Axe" made by Milwaukke that should do just fine.
Attalus would you suggest the shotglass or funnel type anesthesia?

You wear your lenses for swimming?!? Isn't that risky? Like they'll come out with the water?
Also, the reason they bother your eyes after only five hours is that they are so old! I can wear mine for like 12 hours and they only get annoying when my eyes are really tired in the evening.
Can't be bothered to read all the other replies...but I'd get soft contacts whoever is asking...I get the 30 day ones that you take out at night and they are cool, no eye problems for me so far, and I've had them for nearly a year. THere's no point wearing them while you sleep and you will quickly get used to taking them out and putting them in quickly. Although I found it very hard putting them in at first and took up to 30 mins in the first few days!

I was presented with the same choice a year or so ago. Have the same problem with my eyes (wattery, allergy) - except that bit about the makeup remover . My doc made it clear that I might have severe problems with contacts (except the ones I couldn't afford at that time) because of this. And since I'm not vain - I followed Doc's advice, took glasses and avoided all/any complications
