Okay, I had a strange dream last night and it got me thinking about some things that I have heard about dreams. And so I'm wondering: 1.) Do you dream in color or black-and-white? 2.) Are you able to read in your dreams? 3.) Do you ever have music in your dreams?
I had heard that you weren't supposed to be able to read in dreams, but I've never had that problem. That was the question (#2)that was bothering me the most, but I'm also curious about the others. Anyone willing to share their answers or thoughts on the matter? |
Just a quick answer for now...
1. Color or b/w. I have a recurring one in color, the rest is usually b/w. The color one is actually quite disturbing and it's always the same. For a decade now. I actually looked the meanings up and didn't like the results one bit. 2. No. Not yet. 3. You mean except screams ? Neuro |
Thanks for your answers Neuromancer. I'm actually kinda surprised by your answer to #1. I've never had a dream in black and white. I guess I always assumed that everyone dreamed in color most of the time. But I guess I should be thankful that I've never had a recurring dream as well, although yours sounds more disturbing than most. I hope it isn't signalling something as bad as you think!
How's this for strange? I had a friend who had a dream where he read an entire book! That's never happened to me, but I always can read signs and papers and such in my dreams. I had a song in my dream last night... I was running... somewhere... to the song. Kinda fit in a way, but I hadn't heard the song in a while, so I was surprised that it showed up. |
I often have colour in my dreams, though now and then it alternates between colour and black and white. I don't think that I've ever read anything in any of my dreams, perhaps once or twice, but very rarely.
Never music, to the best of my memory, though. Or any other sounds, really. Odd, that. But then again, I am an odd person with an odd mind in an even odder world. |
Good thing you brought this up as I would have never guessed that some people dream in black and white. Personally I dream in colour. Always have. I hear music, talk, am talked to and do things as in real life. I would have thought this was the case for everyone til I saw your post just now.
|
I envy you guys. I never remember anything about my dreams, not to mention details such as colors and sounds.
|
1) As far as I know, I always dream in colour
2) Yes, I can read in dreams, but the second I try to (consciously) focus on a page and read it, it blurs to the point where I can't make out the words anymore. So as long as I don't try to read consciously, I can indeed read in dreams. 3) Never |
B&W and color...
I can only conclude from all your wide-screen technicolor dreams that ... if my waking moments resemble a noir movie, why shouldn't my dreams reflect that No music for me either. Just speech. Other than that, my b&w dreams are usually lightning-fast, incomplete & i manage to dream tons of seemingly unrelated stuff. For those that don't remember dreams : try to write them down - first thing after you wake up. Neuro |
Ah dreams. Noone knows why we do ot but still, got to love them. There´s nothing strange about dreaming b/w or to be able to talk and read in dreams. Our brain is capable of storing smells, pictures, flashes of colors, a voice even a distinct note within a symphoni (how capable the brain is isn´t even known yet ;) ). Well here´s a link if you want to interpret your dreams (warning Freudian :D ) http://www.psywww.com/books/interp/toc.htm

1) Colour, definitely colour. I have yet to see black blood.
2) As most of the rest have said, only when I am not aware I am dreaming. The minute I hit the ephinany, I plunge back into reality at hyperspeed which results in a woozy head. I really hate those moments. "Say, am I dreaming? No wait! I did not mean that! I'm... urm... er... no, NO! Don't end the dream yet! I mean this reality! AHHHHhhhhhhhh... ..." 3) I have music in my dreams, if I leave my CD-Player on next to my bed. Metallica-induced dreams can be quite warped... ... ;) |
Very vividly coloured and sometimes with music.
I tend to remember rooms, sights, light and sounds while I forget the plot. Oh, yeah I am also able to feel, but I dont remember any smell or taste. |
Thanks for everyone's replies so far! It sounds like the reading thing is really a myth. It also sounds like everyone has different kind of dreams.
Neb: You know, I think I've had many dreams where I haven't heard any sounds, or at least I can't remember any. Then I have others that are vibrant and full of audio pleasure. So I don't think you're odd at all. Bokken: Glad that to see that you've learned something new! Warhammer: Don't worry if you don't remember your dreams. I usually don't remember mine either, but every once in a while, I remember one. I seem to be remembering them more lately, however. I've had some long, involved dreams, let me tell you; good enough to write a short story on. Legolas: Hmm... I think that's how reading works for me. I had another dream last night, where I read this book, but I wasn't actually reading it. Then I was supposed to write a report on it, so I went to the computer lab but I couldn't read the screen... Or maybe my dreams are just strange. Neuro: Most of my dreams are quick and of lots of unrelated stuff. Those are the weirdest to remember because you're like, "What the heck was that?" when you wake up. WillowIX: Thanks for the link. Dreams are such wonderful things, aren't they? Dundee: You know, I've never had a dream from listening to music while I sleep. There's sometimes music in my dreams, but that's only when I'm not listening to any when sleeping (as I often don't use music to help me sleep). But I can just imagine the dreams caused by Metallica! Indemaijinj: Oh, physical sensation is a new one to me. I can feel emotions, but never anything physical. I've had smells before, but never taste. Oh, and plots are often optional when you dream. Of course, every now and again, you have a long involved one. This does remind me of another dream question: Have you ever died or killed anyone in your dreams? I have never experienced a dream that wasn't in color, I also have never been able to read or play videogames in my dreams, but I do hear lots of cinematic-type music and/or stuff that would simply scare the living daylights out of you should you hear it in the proper context. I am also able to recall dialogue, and some details outside of faces. I dont know why I cant rememeber faces... I've even done a thread on a dream i've been having that's been reocurring recently to me, each time the story gets a little bit further along and then I wake up... either way... that's just about all I have to say surrounding that... I would like to know a little more abotu the details surrounging your subconceouse experience...

1. Color? You betcha, never had any dream in Black and white as far as I remember.
2.Yeah but I usually don't remember what the words say. 3. I often have sound too, screams, music, conversations (to the point where I wake up and ask the person what the heck they were talking about) ;) explosions as some crazed guy blows up a city. (Dont' ask) Name it and i've probably had it in my dream some time or another. 4. No I don't recall doing that but I often dream that i'm some overpowered person assualting a city. Ah those are the coolest dreams ever... ;) |
1) Color, as far as I know
2) Nope..never read in my dreams as far as I know 3) No music! Ever! |
i dream in color
i read i hear music because i leave the radio on. in a few of my dreams i have been an assasin i had a recurring dream that i have since been able to interperate. in it my g-pa killed a snake in the house. i have been able to interperate this as he died of emphesyma and so taught me the all important lesson to not smoke. kida a short not very in depth explanation.... |
As far as I can remember I've always dreamed in color and experienced everything that is possible (and some things that aren't possible). Most of my earliest memories are of dreams I had as a baby.
I've been able to control things that happen in my dreams since I was at least 12, including what other people are doing (although that takes some of the fun out of it). Is some of them I can find secret doors that lead to other buildings, too. There have been ones where I could taste food, smell smoke or cologne, feel water, textures and pain, read books and do math, hear music, birds chirping, and other sounds. There have been ones where it was like experiencing someone else's dream and ones that were about things that might have happened in the past (and I've even looked up some local history to discover that the area was much like it appeared in the dreams). There have even been a few that really happened in real life a few days or weeks after the dream! Also, if I wake up and don't remember having any dreams (because of not sleeping well) I'm grouchy all day. |
1) Colour
2) No 3) No But then again, my dreams are strange by any definition. Take this one: at school, when it starts raining. Instead of raining water, it rains car engines. Like seriously, WTF??? [ 10-21-2002, 07:53 PM: Message edited by: True_Moose ] |
1) Color never baclk and white.
2) Yes 3) yea,but I would rather not go into that.I have rather weird dreams which i cannot control. |
Yes I dream in full colour and i can read i dreams and oddly enough i can learn things in my dreams e.g my debates, arguments etc. as for music hmmm i think its due to the music turned on beside my bed
|
She dreams in color she dreams in red, she cant find a better man....Er sorry
1) Color? Yes always. 2) No, I cant read in dreams, really agurvates me too becasue i always have a dream where I have to read something. 3) Sounds? Well voices and such, but not really music or anything. Edit: Hey do you people see dreams, like, where you see your self or where its like you your self are looking at things? I see it both ways, incredibly strange. [ 10-21-2002, 09:59 PM: Message edited by: Iron_Ranger ] |
1. When i was young, black n white, now color.
2. No, never able to read in my dreams. 3. I've never heard music in my dreams, unless I'm in a light sleep and I leave my radio on. But me, I think dreams are a vision of something else. I speculate bits and pieces of past lives that we've lived. |
Oh wow, you guys and gals have been great! This has turned out better than I had imagined. Thanks everyone!
/)eathKiller: I've had experiences where faces have been hard to see and recall. I find it very frustrating because I usually have great clarity in my dreams. What else would like to know? Redblueflare: Oh, you remind me of a strange dream I had a few years ago. To be quick: It was judgement day, and I was chosen to kill people who were going to hell (tough to explain really without going into great detail). I was sent down a busy street and I proceeded to mete out justice (dual-wielding daggers). It actually kinda frightened me when I woke up... Hehe, you've got me curious about the guy blowing up the city. Sir Goulum: You've had no music in your dreams, but what about sound effects? Music seems to be a bit less common, but I think totally soundless dreams would be strange. RevRuby: An assassin? Sounds like a cool dream... I've never been able to interpret any of my dreams, but I have had kind of foreshadowing type dreams, where the soon after the dream I see a scene play out as I remember dreaming it. The Ornery One: Wow, experiencing someone else's dream? That's sounds kinda freaky. I hope you haven't had any of my dreams! But, as I mentioned to RevRuby, I have had dreams of the future. So strange when it comes about... I wish I could control more of my dreams, but it's rare for me. I tend to leave them be, for the most part, unless I get really curious about a situation. True_Moose: Raining car engines? That one is pretty strange. But I've had my share of them too. Like in this one dream, I lived in this house with these 4 girls and... oh, maybe I shouldn't discuss that one! ;) There was this dream I had where the entire shopping mall was a big miniature golf course! Strange, but fun. SomeGuy: Strange dreams that you cannot control? Sounds very familiar! Those are usually the ones I have the hardest time remembering, though. whacky: Ooh, learning things. That's a new one by me. I wish I could do that. I have a horrible time trying to memorize and learn things like that. Iron_Ranger: Was that all there was to the verse? You've got me curious... Change in point of view? I've had my share of that. I had this one dream where right when this monster was going to kill one of my companions, I was switched to his perspective and was him as he was killed. It was the first death in any of my dreams. Oh, that was one strange dream; so dark and dreary. SecretMaster: Hmm... bit and pieces of past lives? Maybe some of them, but many of my dreams would not be able to take place in this world, at least. They might be a glimpse into something else, but what would we be viewing?... It sounds like you grew out of your black and white dreams, but I've never heard of that. Of course, that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen! |
This has been very interesting to hear about others' dreams experiences! Here are some other sites that have a little information about dreams.

Thanks for the links The Ornery One. I'll have to check them out when I have more time. But I agree: this has been a most fascinating experience. I hope more people share! Oh, and I will field questions, if I have peaked anyone one's interest in my twisted and warped mind.
