I for one rarely do, because I don't get up in time enough to prepare it. If I grab a banana or a glass of juice on my way out the door, that's about as much as I'll do. Being that my lunch hour is at 11:30 a.m., it's not really a very big deal.
I was reading an article the other day about Denton High School students, some of whom do not get to eat lunch until 1:30 p.m. If they don't eat breakfast, some of them are just about fainting by the time 1:30 rolls around. Those in athletics are really hard-strapped. Apparently there's too many students for the lunchroom, so they have to break lunch up in shifts between 11:30 and 1:30. Those who eat late are habitually tardy to class because they're hitting the vending machines, and they're not allowed to bring in cokes or other edibles into the classroom. A lot of these kids, according to the article, aren't getting proper nourishment and not getting proper sleep. Some of them also fall asleep in class (due to sleep deprivation and food deprivation). What are your views on this? How do you cope if you don't eat breakfast and then lunch is seven hours off? -Sazerac |
Well im in high school and i know what it feels like when i have no breakfast. For some time its ok but after quite a while i feel drowsy and EXTREMELY angry, cant concentrate as well thats why i try to take breakfast each mornin.
|
Is a cup of coffee and two slices of bread considered as breakfast? That is all I have most of the time.

Yeah, I have breakfast every morning, either egg rolls or a breakfast burrito. I get all hungry and cranky if I don't get it.
|
I like to eat at every meal opportunity :D
Fortunately, at my job we have a kitchen, so I eat after I get to work. Sometimes I don't get to eat until lunch or later, but that's usually when I'm really busy. When I'm really busy, I don't think about eating. My son had the opposite problem in school a few years ago. His lunch period was at 1030, so he was starving by supper time. |
never, and i never eat lunch either. I only eat 1 time a day, around 5 or 6 PM.

I eat at work as well. We have a kitchen, but breakfast for me is usually a granola bar and 2 pieces fruit while checking the nytimes and the iwf (erm. . . I mean egf).
|
I never used to have breakfast when I got up or soon afterwards because I just wasn't hungry then, but by 9 or 10 I'd be wanting to munch on my lunch so I started having an english muffin, bagel or even a breakfast bar (grains/fruit) before I leave for work or as soon as I get there. Usually that will hold me til lunch at noon, but some days I nibble on things from my lunch around 10, anyway. I DO think I'm less alert on days when I don't have breakfast.
I think we've gotten into a habit of 'hurry here and scurry there' in the USA, at least. Everything is rushed and we rarely take time for the necessities, like breakfast any more. Go to bed late, get up and rush about to get ready for school or work and then race home to do whatever we have to do and get to bed late again... |

Although I know the responsibility is on the student and his/her parents to provide breakfast, the ridiculous scheduling of lunch periods by the school districts really makes me see red. It's a perfect example of overcrowding in the schools, with not enough facilities to meet even 2/3 of the needs of the student population. Bah! -Saz |
Considering that breakfast is about the most important meal of the day, I always try to have some, even though I'm not usually hungry in the morning. But it's better to breakfast well and skip lunch than the other way around.
Like Cloudy said, when they skip breakfast people usually start getting hungry before lunch and snack on lots of little unhealthy things. I usually have either yoghurt and cereal or bread, sometimes with an egg or a piece of fruit. Oh and lots of tea, I need tea to wake up. :D |
I eat breakfast every day. Probably because cereal is my favorite thing in the world. Frosted Flakes, Grape Nuts, Granola, Total, oatmeal, anything with raisins, Captain Crunch...I could go on forever.
|
So does anyone have any good suggestions for a breakfast for a "speed demon" like myself in the morning who doesn't have but about 2-3 minutes to spare? ;) (I'm serious, btw...I could use some suggestions!) Attalus' idea with the breakfast burritos sounds good, if they could be "nuked" in 30 seconds to a minute. Anything else?
One other thing. Does anyone here have a "country breakfast" anymore? The kind where they'd fill you up with so much stuff (sausages, pancakes, waffles, ham, bacon, eggs, biscuits) because you were going off to work in the field for 12 hours? I never could stomach something like that...seeing people eat that much nauseates and disgusts me. No offense meant. But in the urbanized society, I can't imagine that one would *need* to eat that much. -Sazerac |
brekfast? I rarely break my fast, UNLESS my mums done me brekfast ;) you see I like to sleep in as late as possible, and taking time to eat would take longer... usually IF my mum wakes me, I have a coffee, sometimes an egg n toast, not too often, otherwise I'll skip eating altogether. Sometimes, more often as not, I'll miss lunch as well, usually when Im at college, I'll have a coke, maybe a packet of polos or something, perhaps a packet of crips? lol, sometimes I'll find Ive eaten THREE packets of polos... :| disturbing that. heh, I really SHOULD eat more...
|
I usually just hit the school cafeteria when I get there, a can of orange juice and a bagle.
|
I used to not have breakfast till about four years ago, when I went on a bit of a fitness craze. It's the most important meal of the day, but unfortunately it becomes the first big decision point of the day - do you get up and have breakfast, or do you sleep in for another fifteen minutes. :D
I find I've got a lot more get-up-and-go when I have breakfast. A hot breakfast is the best - an omelette (if you have an omelette maker) or scrambled with some toast. Even if you're in a rush, have a couple of muesli bars or something, Saz - you can munch them down quickly, or some fruit or yoghurt would be good too. Breakfast? Lunch? Is there any difference :D No mre than 2-3mins. Hmm, how about getting up 15mins earlier Saz? *runs for cover* :D
|
Few months back I was on 'fitness mealz', which is basically some vegetables which have been pressed down to make it look like a bigger portion. I had these for breakfast, lunch and dinner, since I was enduring some heavy training at the time. problem was, I didn't know that you were meant to have some other kind of meal WITH them. ;) I was basically dead on my feet by 1:00. This did NOT help my running :D
I make sure I have breakfast now, especially on days I run. I really need that extra bit of energy. |
Saz, the only time I get to indulge in a "country breakfast" is when I'm on vacation. I always feel miserable afterwards, but I look forward to it nonetheless...lol. :D
|
I can rarely eat first thing in the morning. I usually have coffee & danish or fried egg buttie (sandwich) from the work canteen at around 10.30 though. Then I usually skip lunch.
I do sometimes like a full english breakfast. I *ehem* used to be vegetarian but I didn't half fancy a sausage a couple of weeks ago, so I thought maybe my body needed it so I ate some - and remembered how bloody good they taste. So I'm not veggie any more, and can now eat english breakfast when the mood takes me! (For the uninitiated this consists of fried eggs, sausages, bacon, baked beans, fried tomatoes, fried bread or toast, and sometimes black pudding - which is basically a big slice of sausage made from blood and fat). Usually only do that when I'm hungover which isn't often these days, or when I'm on holiday. |
i used to think that breakfast was important because it would make me angry if i didin;t eat it....now i have an 8 am and a 10 am class, and i hate them so whether or not i eat breakfast i get angry...i actually lost 10 lbs NOT eating breakfast (which was just a bowl of cereal). Seeing as how i am a freshman in college i guess the freshmen 15 was a lie....or something:-p breakfast is overrated

I always eat breakfest. Through the week, it's usuallly creme cheese on a toasted bagel. On weekends, it's three eggs, 3 or four biskets and either sausage or bacon. Lot's of times I'll skip lunch on the weekends, especially if I'm going to the University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Game. Then I tailgate. I like going to Cracker Barrel and having the Country Boy Breakfest which has steak and eggs, biscuits, gravey, hash brown cassorolle, fried apples and grits. Oh and lots and lots of coffee! No such thing as too much coffee. I usually have two or three mugs of regular coffee and two or three of decafe. I like juice too when we have it.
Saz, you just need to get up a little earlier. This may mean... dare I suggest it... this may mean you'll have to stop playing CRPGs at little bit earlier too. OK STOP THROWING THINGS AT THE COMPUTER!!! IT WAS JUST A SUGGESTION! |
Well, it's not because of the CRPG's, actually...it's because I work first shift and my wife works 2nd shift, so the only time we get to *ahem* see *cough* each other is very very late night...
*sigh* Not to mention that I'm a night owl who lives in a daytime-oriented world. My best creative work I do at night. Besides, I'm damned if I'm going to be a slave to anything, much less an alarum clock. Like I said, the not eating breakfast isn't really an issue because I have such an early lunch. I was just interested in finding out how others did and were they affected by it. -Sazerac |
I never eat breakfast...I know it's the most important meal of the day..but I'm never hungry early in the morning
|
I used to skip it but when getting hungry in the 1st or 2nd hour at school is worse than eating something when I'm not hungry.
|
Saz, I stop by the grocery store on the way to work and pick my breakfast up, and then eat it at the office while I'm waiting for them to set my first patients up. I also get to look at the paper, which puts me in a better mood.
|
Does beer count? Seriously, a bowl of cereal and a glass of berocca does it for me
I have lunch about 2pm usually so need something to get me through the morning. |
Man, Attalus, I wish I could do that! Unfortunately, "no food in the computer labs of any kind." The students try to sneak in food, of course, but as a teacher, I've got to set a good example. ;)
So it's "car" or nothing. Ah well! -Saz |

I'd keel over if I didn't have breakfast. When I finished school they were just starting a breakfast thing at the canteen. Lots of kids would go to school without eating because they didn't have time and their parents for whatever reason didn't provide anything for them, so the canteen opened before classes and sold fruit loaf and yoghurt and stuff. Was a good idea, it's so hard to concentrate when you're hungry. Plus if you ate in the morning you were less likely to buy dubious things like chip rolls at morning tea ;) |
I don't eat breakfast myself anymore. I just don't feel hungry in the morning. Every once in awhile I do and just hit McDonalds and grab a bagel sandwich or a hash brown and eat it at work. But usually no breakfast, and I eat lunch as late as possible, usually around 2:00pm (just this thing I have, the later I can prolong lunch at work, the less time I have left after lunch before my day at work is over LOL). So sometimes I much on Fritos or crackers or something around 11:00 to tide me over if I get hungry.
Sucks you have to eat in your car Saz. Maybe you could try having a bagel or English muffin (although that could get messy depending on what you put on it), or a McDonalds or other fast food hashbrown (small and you can keep it in the paper wrapping while eating it so no greasy fingers), or maybe a Pop Tart or a Toaster Strudel (sp?) :D [ 10-09-2002, 05:12 PM: Message edited by: ladyzekke ] |

Breakfast is *essential*. After a full night's sleep, your body has no sugar in it's bloodstream to get working with. If you eat berakfast, the sugar gets into your bloodstream, you have energy, you go to work everything is fine. Your body releases Insulin to force some of the sugar into your muscles to prepare them for action, and very little of it as fat. Things are looking good.
If you don't eat breakfast, then bad things happen. Your body releases cortisol, a stress chemical, into your bloodstream, and it provides you with an energy boost by starting to break down fat for energy. is this good? No - because cortisol actually breaks down muscle, too. And at an astounding rate. That's right folks - if you don't eat breakfast, your body starts eating it's own muscles. *Then*, once these stress chemicles are in your body, it figures there is a reason that you are not eating, so it shifts it's priority to putting on fat, figuring there is a food shortage. Then, when you finally grab lunch at midday, your body releases a massive surge of Insulin, only this time it is geared to doing it's very best to force as much of the contained sugar into your body's fat reserves as possible, preparing to combat the food shortage. This sucks all the sugar out of your bloodstream as fast as it is put in, making you lethargic and sleepy. With a full stomach (because you were so hungry before lunch that you ate alot), you are not hungry again for hours and hours, and so once again your body starts to slow down, seeing as no new food is ebtering your system. hence a vicious circle begins. Eat breakfast. Even if it makes you feel ill, keep at it. Within one month, your body will adapt to having food on it's stomach first thing in the morning, and you will actually be hungry when you wake up, and you will feel great. |
Thanks for that info Bardan But, I dunno. It just seems to me if I'm not hungry I shouldn't eat. I don't want to enlarge my stomach to where it needs more food to fill it. As I stand now, I weigh about 93 pounds, only stand at 5 foot tall, so I feel I'm good, not too skinny, not too fat, out of shape yes LOL. Most of my workday is sitting in front of a PC, so not big physical movement going on. If I did more physical labor at work things might be different, I'd probably be hungry sooner. I remember when I was 18 I worked at a construction site, was the person who cleaned units after they were built and all hooked up, etc., was quite a physical job, and I remember being starving by 11:00am when the beloved "roach coach" would trundle along :D
I mean maybe your theories are correct, for some?, but everyone's body is different. I just think if I started to force meals down when I wasn't hungry, I would gain weight at an incredible rate, and not be able to stop, it might become an addiction (and I'm pretty prone to addictions, I think its hereditary actually). [ 10-09-2002, 09:15 PM: Message edited by: ladyzekke ] |
Well, I never usually have this problem, but if I do, then I might go to Happy Mart, or Reddi Mart in the morning, and get some food (They are convenience stores near my school). If I don't have money, then I go around the school asking people aimlessly for food. :D
|
I always have it. Have to.
Mainly because it`s the only food I eat before lunch at quarter to one; even though we do get to have recess at about 11; I found that if I eat at recess, I start getting on the verge of obesity, but if I don`t I stay in the "healthy weight" area... if I don`t eat breakfast or don`t eat lunch, I loose more weight, but i`m a bit worried that if I do that for too long, i`ll become severly underweight; not something I want, either. Thus, three meals a day, and not much else |
Well When I work days at work I always have breaky. Usally two eggs hash browns and toast coffee and juice if not I can get nothing done at work just not enough energy.
@epona I rember the days that I worked in england and making fried bread that stuff makes you have iron guts. And making a English breaky now that fills a person up sure is different here in Canada eh! |
I usually do. At home I choose something from this list: toast, some form of egg (omelet, scrambled, over easy), a bowl of cereal, maybe some bacon, or a waffle. If I am going somewhere, I'll stop and get a croissant.
No matter what I eat, though, I will invariably have coffee, coffee, and coffee. I can go all day on 3 or 4 cups of coffee. |
Nah, never have breakfast. I eat two meals a day at the very most, and if I do, it's always lunch and dinner.
