Okay, I have never downloaded a mod before, and I need to know....

Which ones are the best.

Please rank from 1st to last. I want to know which ones are good before I bother to download any.

Sir Goulum 06-10-2002 07:11 PM

I wouldn't get one if I were you. I've heard from some people that they gimp up the game :(

Xero279 06-10-2002 08:35 PM

some mods only give u new chars which wouldnt mess it up really, just adds to it

I liked Freedoms Reign. It added a couple items and stores, but nothing over powerful. Some of them even seemed like they should have been there all along. Some were pointless and I wouldn't ever touch them. I haven't tried any other mods though, they're all too dang big to download on my 56k.

OK, well, Kelsey, Tashia, and Solaufien are all good mods with good reputations. They're compatible as well, provided that you install Sola first. If you have TOB, Ascension is a must (look for the WeiDU version of that so it's compatible with the others).

If you don't have TOB now, The Darkest Day isn't bad, especially now that they've got all the bugs ironed out (you have to download several patches tho).

As with everything, there's a right way and a wrong way to go about something, MOD creation included.

The Kelsey NPC mod has been rigorously tested, and is quite compatible.

Similarly, the Solaufein NPC mod is well-designed.

Tashia is reportedly quite stable.

(Note that Valen is more for the adventurous and still has a few tricky areas.)

they have been known to stuff up the game.. that is why you make a backup 1st ;) ... but the ones that dont add to the game and make them just a little bit more fun after you've played it through lots of times

Sir Mandorallen 06-12-2002 08:58 AM

Okay, another question....

Some of these things say that you have to put your files in the SoA installation folder and NOT the override folder.
Well the problem is.....

I don't have a installation folder. I searched and searched for about an hour, and I don't have one.

So can someone tell me WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!?!

Sir Exxon 06-12-2002 09:42 AM

Aye, I dont have any installation folder either... But for me, the Nalia romance-mod atleast work in the override.

Helspanth 06-12-2002 10:10 AM

I think that your installation folder is the folder where you have installed the game .
For example C/Program Files/Black Isle/BG II.

Sir Mandorallen 06-12-2002 11:02 AM

Okay now please excuse my ignorance in computers, but how do I back-up a file or folder? I wan't to make sure nothing happens that I can't reverse.

And about the new character downloads, I want to download the Nailia Romance, Solaufein, Tashia, Kelsey, and for my evil NPC fighter dualed to a thief that I'm going to create, I want Valen.

Thats proboly going to be all I'm going to d/l. But what order? I know that you need the newest ToB patch first but you can't install some of these on each other, or at least not in the wrong order.

The only other thing I downloaded was the Jaheira Romance Fix Pack from Baulderdash, and the Bounus CD Merchants from Baulderdash. Will these have any effects?
Thanx for being patient with my ignorance.

In either My Computer or Windows Explorer, locate the folder in question (probably C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII-SOA\Override). Right-click on the Override folder and choose "Copy" from the menu.

Now right-click in the white area of the same window and choose "Paste" from the menu. You should now have another folder that says "Copy of Override". You can rename it or just leave it as is. What I do is rename it by putting the date on it so I'll remember which backup it is: like "Copy of Override 061202" for June 12, 2002.

Hope this helps!

P.S. I just did this because I downloaded the "Ascension" mod for ToB (at Memnoch's insistence! ;) ) and I know this method works.

Nalia comes in non weidu format and so I think it must be installed first.
Kelsey,Sola,Valen,Tashia are all in weidu and so I don't think that there is a problem.
You should install all baldurash fixes BEFORE any mod.
To be sure about the installation order you can check the mods readme. There should be enough info in there!

Sir Mandorallen 06-12-2002 11:27 AM

Thanx Saz!
Ummm... I DID read the readmes first... thats why I was so damn confused. But I think everything is under control.

In fact...
THANKS EVERYBODY!!!!

I think I have enough info to download anything else from Baulerdash then the Nalia Romance, and so-forth.

thanx agian.

Enjoy the mods!

Sir Mandorallen 06-12-2002 03:36 PM

One more question. How do I get my back-up file to become the regular file? Do I just delete the original, and then copy and paste with the back-up file?? But wouldn't that just give me a copy of a copy of my override folder??

I'M CONFUSED!!!

What do I do???

Nah...just rename the folders.

Rename the new "override" folder to something like "override1", then rename the old copied folder back to "override." It should work. ;)

Cheers,

Xero279 06-12-2002 03:49 PM

when i backup my game i got under multiplayer save folder then find the file that i play off of then copy it and paste it on my desktop or something, then if a mod messed up my game i can just delete the folder from the multiplayer folder and past the copy i made back in there. WHat happens when u copy and paste your override folder like Sazerac said?

Sir Mandorallen 06-12-2002 03:51 PM

So I just take the one that says copy of override folder and change its name to override and take the one that I want to get rid of and change its name to anything but override?

I just want to make sure. I kinda crashed our computer last time I screwed around alot, and I want to be able to fix it this time.

Oh yeah, can I delete the one I don't want to save disk space??

Memnoch 06-14-2002 07:41 AM

You need to do two main backups:

Copy your BG2 override folder into a NEW folder (create a new one called Override Backup and put it anywhere on your harddrive). Then copy your dialog.tlk file (if your mod involves any dialogue changes) which you can find in your MAIN BG2 folder, and copy that to your backup folder location as well. Just remember that you've put the dialog.tlk in that folder if you ever need to reinstall it.
