A distressing question indeed!
Are we nerds?? There are many interesting possibilities to this hurtful question:

by saying it's hurtful, i imply that i might be a nerd. then as a nerd i ask you a question which insults myself and likely some to most of this forum. which is like a nerd asking a lot of other nerds whether we think we are nerds.

Anyway.. look at the poll

Yes! We shall rule with our graphics cards and programming books! :D

No seriously...
Nerd is a bland term for people that probably interact with real life people a great deal less, spend an obcene amount of time with their computers...etc.
I think it's what you do with your time that matters. If it's productive, so what if it's by urself?
It may not be the perfect situation but in my opinion if you are a "good" nerd then you are leagues ahead of 97% (arbitary high value) of the world's population. However if you are a bad nerd you are probably leagues behind only 20% of the world's population.

I think it's 'safe' to be a nerd in certain situations. For example, if I'm at home, on my own, with nothing to do for a day, I might look through a D&D Creature Catalogue, or get out Baldur's Gate and start a game on that. But I draw the line when it starts interfering with other things; social events, school work, or any other important duties. I wouldn't cancel a night out with my friends to go and finish the Nashkel mines, for example.

realbinky 09-24-2002 09:16 AM

Well I sure am. Don't know about you all. I may be a geek too, but I may be overestimating there.

No, I'm a semi-nerd with full-on nerdal tendencies. I strive to maintain balance. And yes Weisi, there was a stage where I was so addicted to Baldur's Gate that I was bent on finishing it. That didn't last too long, though ;)

Dundee Slaytern 09-24-2002 09:43 AM

I spent most of my free time in front of the computer, but given a choice to go out, and I will not complain( out with friends, vacations and fun stuff that is, not another visit to an Aunt's house where there are dozens of screaming kids...).

Well let's see... Blabster's Defines a Nerd as:

Nerd (Proper/N): A circus act where an individual bites heads off of live chickens without any moral questioning or hesitation all to please the audience.

hmm and apparnetly you can't use the word in scrabble either

As for me:
I'm not a Nerd I'm an Otaku.

realbinky 09-24-2002 09:53 AM

I think you mean geek. A geek was originally a circus performer, that would eat almost anything, alive or dead. The scary-bizarre guy. A nerd, was originated by doctor suess, but not defined at that time. It got a definition of a "square" in 1957, daddio.

Barry the Sprout 09-24-2002 10:05 AM

I think that we are living in the age of the New Nerd, like the New Man that preceeded it 10 years ago, but with internet access. The New Nerd has come out of the internet cafe and onto the streets signalling a brave new world for all of us. They continue to be fantasy/sci-fi obsessed but now do so with the added ambiguity of post-modernist irony, which means no one really knows if they are taking themselves seriously or not at any one time. The New Nerd is not afraid to show his ignorant side and no longer feels the need to be more intelligent than non-nerds.

This rambling could go on for ever, but in conclusion: biscuits are nice, especially chocolate bourbons.

Timber Loftis 09-24-2002 10:16 AM

I am most definately a nerd, and have been for a few decades, and I will prove it by using a nerd-word, LOL, and leaving you a

Worker Nerds of the world untie!!

the sauceman 09-24-2002 10:39 AM

Here Here Barry! I support your theory entirely!
(Especially the part about the biscuits being nice.....Mmmmm, buscuits.... :D )

Horatio 09-24-2002 12:08 PM

I go out a lot, have a good social life, enjoy a wide array of sports. I'm no nerd. Just a freak. :D

I think that if Real Genius taught us anything, it was that nerds can be cool too.

Rimjaw 09-24-2002 12:24 PM

Hey, actor Vin Diesel is known to play D&D (I believe he visited the WotC office before or something) and he stresses that playing D&D is in no way a nerdy hobby, so there.

Iron_Ranger 09-24-2002 03:09 PM

Well, by most accounts I am nerd. I am really into RPing, I have glasses (curly hair too!), I stay on the compurter alot, I dont really like being in the 'in-crowd'.

But I think it could go the other way if I wanted it too. I just find this lief style more intresting.

You like hockey. By that definition alone you can't be a nerd.

Sir Goulum 09-24-2002 05:32 PM

The definition of 'nerd' depends on you. It can change from person to person...a nerd can be someone who gets perfect marks on everything. It could be someone who doesn't smoke. It could be someone that goes to forums. It could be someone who plays RPG's, and knows every single thing about computors and has numerous little devices for it.

In my opinion, noone is a nerd. We all just find some things more fun and exciting to do in our lives than others. I myself am considerd a 'nerd' by some people. To them, someone that goes on forums and plays on the computor lots is a nerd. My friends back me up...not all them do what I do, but respect what I do.

Moni 09-24-2002 07:47 PM

I've been told that I am the first biker-nerd that KHaN has ever known to exist.
There are people at school who nearly dropped dead laughing at his description of me because, they say, its true.
Well, at least I am a cool nerd! ;)
Aaaaaaayyyyy!
(Ok that last one was just bad, somebody take my pocket protector!)

I belong to a herd of nerds? Thanks for telling me. ;)

Sir Krustin 09-24-2002 10:23 PM

A sociology major, who RPed with us as a study (mostly Space[d] Opera as I remember) says that all gamers have some kind of hang-up with sex. They've had bad relationships in the past, never had good success with members of the opposite sex in school, etc.

Dunno how much truth there is to that...but it's at least partly true. A lot of gamers I knew were _very_ frustrated people! ;)

Megabot 09-24-2002 11:58 PM

I am a computer nerd that`s all hehe :D
