Maybe this has been done before, dunno.

Anyways, what concerts have you been to like in the past 10 years? And what was your seat situation, atmosphere, indoor or outdoor concert, and your experiences, did you like it or not?

In the past 10 years I've been to three concerts

1. 1994 (guessing the date, if I'm wrong I'm at least close), think it was the Meriwether Post Pavilion, it was in D.C. anyways, an outdoor stadium, summer, in the high 90's, cookin! Sun beamin on everyone too when the concert started. Band was The WHO. Our seats were almost right at the top, waaay far away, but at least they had huge TVs hanging about that showed the band so you could see them (no way we could see them as far back our seats were, not without binoculars anyways). The concert itself was OK. The concert "experience" was crap LOL. Got there a bit late, so parking was a bitch, then get finally to our seats and some b*&*& is sitting in my seat, drunken argument, I won, so we sit down. Well, we have nothing to drink, so somebody has to go for beers, which are in those paperwax cups (which don't do well in the heat trust me). So after a ten mile hike and back sweating the entire way, we are back in our seats with our floppy cups full of beer (for five bucks each! rape!) Gotta drink em down quick as the cups start goin down in the heat LOL. Well, 30 minutes later, guess what? Gotta go! So I'm traipsing again the 10 minute hike to the ladies room, which I come to see has 30 people waiting! (btw, men's bathroom has NO line at all). So I look upon that concert as a bit of a bad experience, since most of it consisted of walking a lot and missing a lot of music, and then the argument thing with that woman trying to steal my seat.

Concert #2 was also in D.C., in 1999, can't remember which pavilion, but it was an indoor one. Band was the Dave Matthews Band. Geeeez our seats were all the way back, along the back wall LOL, and they had NO big screen TVs for us who couldn't see the band except for small black smudges. That sucked. Plus most of the audience seemed to be from a bunch of high schools, I felt so old there LOL, although nobody looked at me like I was out of place. They didn't like us smoking though (yeah it's not allowed but we sneaked anyways, figuring the working attendants didn't want to traipse up the 5 million stairs to get to us LOL and stop us).

Concert #3 was in the Nissan Pavilion, year 2000, (best Pavilion out there, is in Virginia, and is excellent!!! Has tons of bathrooms for one, tons of stands where you can get food or drink too, and all this is encircling the stadium, so no matter what end you find yourself on, you are good LOL ;) Band was John Fogherty (from Creedence Clearwater Revival). He was singing with his own band, but he picked a good one, the music was so much more precise and the drums were thundering, made every song so strong! Quality is rarely heard nowadays, and that night I heard it. Our seat was front row, center, fourth row. Was the best concert I've ever been to. The audience consisted of people in their teens, 20's, 30's and up, and everyone was happy and smiling, it was an unbeliveable experience. The music rocked! Had such a great time!

So tell me what yall's experiences were with concerts?

I've been to three concerts I can remember

#1-1992. Fred Penner. I don't know if you guys get him in the states, but he's like a musical Barney. Pretty cool.
#2-2000. Dave Weckl. Best single drummer on earth. I would do ANYTHING to drum as good as that guy. Blew my socks off.
#3-2002. Terrain. Probably never heard of them before, right? My old drum teacher's band. Really cool.

Personally, I don't really enjoy paying $$$ to see bands from 9 light years away, in the middle of sweating, teeming masses of people. That's just my humble opinion.

Moni 09-20-2002 10:36 PM

Ten years....making me think lol

10 years ago, King's Something or Another LOL maybe Eric Johnson & Robert Plant too but those might have been in the preceding year or two.

9 years ago, Damn, I can't remember the bands but they were popular...I was too busy seductively flirting with a guy I had used to work with from my seat in the first balcony...he was on the floor, sweating in his boots LOL so bad that he left the concert about halfway through...he had a crush on me at work but was too shy to ever act on it and then he had to mix that with racial prejudice to stay in good with his fellow Hispanic co-workers...I was in a mood that night I guess because I normally don't do things like that, esp with a "date" sitting next to me and all lol (a really good friend)...all the time I was flirting with him, he couldn't take his eyes off of me and his friend kept having to jab him to get his attention ha ha ha ;)

8 years ago? No Doubt, Bush, & The Goo Goo Dolls...I crowd-surfed at 30+ years of age (for the first time ever lol), got my soul-mate back for another 5 years, stole the Goo Goo Dolls Dressing Room Sign, and met the members of Bush up close and personal-like....anyone ever see the scar across the drummer's neck? Was that done with his consent I wonder? Like people are into scarification? Its bloody gross up close!

I haven't been to one since then...when I had my soul mate, I didn't need any outside entertainment ;) and San Antonio just doesn't know how to rock...they think having Dokken and Ratt here next week is a big thing

<font color=skyblue>I can't remember if it was <s>2003 or 2004</s>1993, 1994...oops......but I saw Suicidal Tendencies and Candlebox open for Metallica in Charlotte. Candlebox was assigned after Alice in Chains broke up, shortly before the concert. I was so pissed at that! But Candlebox was so good, I went to another concert of theirs in Charlotte in 1996. (February). I had front row, but had to continually fight to keep it.!</font>

Well I've seen Better n Ezra 4x, Blink182 3x, Queensryche(sp?), RUSH!!, Green Day, Iron Maiden, Six Pence, a few Indie festivals, numerous locals .... My fav shows have to be Rush (Neil Pert is THE BEST drummer !!! ) and Better n Ezra.

Ladyzekke 09-20-2002 10:46 PM

Moni - Hey Robert Plant had to be good? Always liked Led Zeplin but never saw them live though, and I guess you were occupaado that night LOL!

Larry - Well in 2003 or 2004 I'll have to check those concerts out, thanks for the heads up! :D

Ladyzekke 09-20-2002 10:47 PM

Be nice if yall could add a bit more to your concert experiences, not just the band names, I mean, what was it like? Indoor outdoor, fun not fun who were you with, night or day which was your favorite, etc. Ya know, that kinda thing ;)

It was Robert Plant's solo thing "Manic Nirvana" whatever year that was LOL.
I was with a 6'4" beautiful blonde guy and dressed to the 9's. It was a great show with background visuals geared toward drugs I wasn't doing LOL but the music was GREAT! We were down on the floor about 15th row, right of center.

We left the floor early and went up to the second (and highest) balcony level, up behind the audience and stood at the wall facing the stage just prior to the encore....lights were still down and RP walked out onto the stage alone.....I told my date to get out his lighter and I got mine....straight out from the stage, as high up as an audience member could get, RP saw our two lighters sway right, then left in unison....RP raised his fist and swayed it first right, then left in the same motion/arc/time that we had used with our lighters........lighters went off throughout the arena lighting it up with thousands of individual flames swaying back and forth as RP had done with his fist. We felt honored and proud as we watched the last song, waved our lights good bye and left. :D

All of those were indoor concerts...the music was good or I would have left LOL I had to sit through a doped up Aerosmith concert (they were doped up, not me lol) when I was 15 and swore never ever again to sit through a bad show.

Ladyzekke 09-20-2002 11:12 PM

Oh that sounds so cool Moni! RP has such a unique voice, he is a legend! Sounds like a great concert to remember! Wish I had seen him back then, I don't think they (led zeplin) tour anymore. Oh and yeah, myself I've never been to an Aerosmith concert, but two people I know had been to one, and both say they totally SUCK live. Not that I'm an Aerosmith fan anyways, most of their songs all sound the same to me, they use the same "tune" again and again in different variations, and it's gotten so old they need to just give it up and go back to their mansions and eat tapioca or something. Funny how some bands get old, and some just get better. ;)

LMAO, yes, push their wheelchairs up next to the members of AC/DC ;)

RP was definitely a night to remember. I never saw Led Zeppelin, but RP was good enough to make up for it. Well, almost!

True_Moose 09-20-2002 11:35 PM

Unfortunately, LZ I can't elaborate too much but I recall one more concert:
#4 I was like 6 and Sharon, Lois and Bram came to town. Canadian kid entertainers. Anyway here I was in the nosebleeds with my mom, and they asked for some people from the audience. I was jumping up and down waving my hand, thinking they would pick me

#2 was in a small hall, I was near the back but was still only maybe 20 metres (60 feet?) away from him. My most vivid thought was dropping my jaw when I saw him start a drum solo where I stopped seeing his hands move they were so quick

#3 was at the opening CD party. It was in a smoke filled bar, and I thought I would get lung cancer. Unfortunately we had to leave halfway through because my dad, who quit smoking, was getting the urges again.

Night Stalker 09-20-2002 11:44 PM

Well, being a drummer myself, and thinking that Neil Pert is fantabulous ... watching/listening to Rush was just pure poetry to me. It was the Presto tour in Philly that I saw.

But I have to say that I really liked Better n Ezra. I've seen them twice each in Atlanta and Philly. The venue was small, 1000 or so people, but the crowd was real enthused. That and there was no such thing as a bad seat. They played a 2 1/2 hr set each time and changed the show for each crowd (more than the obligatory "[city] rocks!"). A real energetic show. Six Pence opened for them once. That girl has a real pretty etheral like voice.

Blink182 has been great each time. I can even forgive Travis for ripping off Neil Perts drum solo, The Rythnm Method, cause it's just so awesome. They also put on an energetic show - very punk (purists may flame now ...).

Queensryche's Empire show had a very creepy moment. They had two huge monitor boards on each side of the stage. During a song "Eyes of a Stranger" there was a single eye in each screen (16-20 or so) and there always seemed to be a "pair" staring at you .....

Leonis 09-21-2002 12:59 AM

Ok...

U2 & B.B.King - Lovetown Tour (Joshua Tree Rattle & Hum)

Venue was the Sydney Entertainment Centre - which is a very poor sounding room. We were in row X or something which is two from the back - if you jumped up you could have touched the roof of the venue!
As it was my first major band concert I had a great time though. B.B.King was fantastic, even if the crowd got kinda bored of him, and U2 were great although when I think about it now, I seem to recall watching the screens a lot...

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son Tour

Venue - Enmore Theatre, Sydney. This place is always a favourite venue of mine - dark intimate theatre (maybe 1000 seats? less?) always a loud warm sound, and always a hot charged atmosphere.
On this night Cave was in fine form doing his 'hung-over, fallen preacher' thing. The Nick Cave worshipers intrigued me too. One of my favourite high school memories this was.

Guns 'N' Roses/Skid Row/Rose Tattoo - Use your Illusion Tour

Venue - Eastern Creek Raceway, Western Sydney (Outdoor)
By far and away this is the worst gig I have ever been too! It was hot, dusty, crowded (80,000), not enough toilets/food/alcohol, very low quality toilets/food/alcohol, fights, fires...you name it!
Then the bands! Rose Tattoo should never have made a comeback - fat, old and drug****ed (felt like I was watching Weekend At Bernie’s - The Musical!)
Skid Row - man, their 'singer' talked and whined about himself and his problems for 2/3 of their 'gig'. When they did play a song they sucked anyway. I recall them being booed a lot.
Guns 'n' Roses came on well over an hour late. They had a sign flashing the band name trying to get an unenthusiastic crowd to participate. They played 8 song and left. The sucked so much, I don't think Slash even knew where he was. I have disliked them from that day on.

Rollins Band - End of Silence Tour

Venue - Horden Pavilion Sydney - 3000 or 4000 capacity I think? Great sound if you have the right band and sound guys. It basically a large hall though.
The atmosphere here was intense - lots of angry young men with testosterone flowing freely. I went with my brother-in-law who was one of most extreme guys I knew back then.
Support band was Aussie legends The Hard Ons, who were fantastic, a perfect lead up to Rollins.
I remember we'd worked our way near to the middle front when Rollins came on with Low Self Opinion - the crowd just surged forward and I was almost up on the barricade in seconds. We were in the mosh from then on. Band played so well and I felt like I'd been through the wringer afterwards. Exhilarating.

Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream Tour

Also at the Hordern.Packed, hot and electric. My friends and I managed to find a VIP balcony and stay there without getting removed. Awesome night and they had those great ‘druggy’ visuals going on.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication Tour

At the Sydney Ent Cent. So sound wasn’t the best but band played well. Anthony Keidis looked a little flat but the playing was everything I’d hoped for and more. The crowd was very mixed and very into it. Seeing the whole venue jumping up and down was spectacular. We were sitting in the second row, maybe 10 or 15 seats from the side of the stage – overlooking the dance floor. Very close. It was an experience.

Alanis Morrisette and Garbage – Supposed Former…/2.0 double header

Superdome, Homebush Bay, Sydney – Large indoor stadium in the vein of Ent Cent. But with newer facilities and better sound. Still the big gig vibe that I don’t prefer.
I went mainly to see Garbage – they were good but slightly clinical. Crowd responded well but they just didn’t nail it for me.
Alanis on the other hand blew me away! I’d never gotten into her music much but live she and her band were brilliant. Had an edgy moody incense velvet sort of vibe. Controlled mania? Absolutely worth going to this one. We were in a similar position to the Chilis so were able to avoid that watching the monitors feel.

Phew! There may be some more I’ve forgotten but I’ll finish off with

The Tea Party – Splendor Solis/Edges of Twilight/ Transmission Tours

Yes. Three times and they have been outstanding each time.
First was at the Phoenician Club in Sydney – a small legendary venue that also saw Nirvana play just before Nevermind went ballistic. Similar feel to the Enmore theatre but smaller. More intimate. I’d heard these guys’ debut at a party and was invited to their show the next night. No idea what to expect and I was amazed. The singer was really overdoing the rock wanker thing but if you ignored him and focused on the music it was insane.

Next saw them at the Uni of Wollongong - typical university main hall gig thing. This uni has one of the highest levels of drug taking in the country so you can imagine the atmosphere. It was a great night – sound was a bit better than decent, band had got even better and the singer was toning down the rock god poses.

Saw them again at my beloved Enmore Theatre for the Transmission tour. Such a suitable place for these guys. I had the best night here. They nailed every song and the antics had been almost completely dropped for just fine musical performance. These guys will do very little that’s exactly like the album – they keep it interesting and improvised and extend etc… The crowd was already on edge and tightly wound and as they finished a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah tribute to Jeff Buckley who’d just passed away all hell broke loose. Possible the best gig I’ve been to because it had all the elements at their peak.

All in all I enjoy most concerts I go to. I also see a ton a local/big Aussie bands at pubs, clubs and the odd festival.

Downunda 09-21-2002 01:24 AM

Big Day Out five times, Shihad (Now known as Pacifier) twice, Tadpole once, Pennywise once, Kitsch twice, Gatecrasher twice and I went to Salmonella Dub just last nite for the first time

LennonCook 09-21-2002 05:12 AM

skywalker 09-21-2002 05:17 AM

Kansas/Styx...an excellent concert.

And I saw Marilyn Manson in a little theater in Burlington, VT just before he got "big". A very odd experience for someone my age! ;)

Is this typical for America or Australia I wonder?
We do get concerts in halls here too, but most bands that aren't too big don't give concerts like that. I've never seen TVs/screens at a concert that I can remember.... no wait only once, at a MUSE gig last year. But they were there for artistic purposes mainly...
I've also heard that in the USA most people sit down at concerts... that's so weird!
Almost every gig I've been to, I could almost reach out and touch the band, venues weren't so huge either. And after comparing with an American friend earlier, I can say that tickets are usually cheaper here as well...

Anyway I cannot even begin to list all the concerts I've seen but I'll give it a try.

First one was Slayer and Machine Head in 1994, when I was fourteen years old. I went with my friend who was also 14, neither of our parents could believe they'd allowed it afterwards ;)
This is one of those rare concerts that were in a big hall with lots of people and where there were seats around the main floor as well.
Second I saw lots of death metal bands and similar godawful noise ;) : Death (pretty special that I have seen them, Chuck Schuldiner now sadly deceased) Gorefest, Grave, Unleashed, Hate-Squad...
Then My Dying Bride, Benediction, Madball, Sick Of It All, Venom (!!), Machine Head again, Pro-Pain, etc...
All this was when I was around 14-15.
Some local bands, all death metal or similar: Gutwrench, Bifrost, Consolation, Nembrionic, Nocturnal Silence, Evisceration, Pyaemia... must have seen most of these 10 times or over

Some more festivals: Ministry, Slayer again, Type-O-Negative, Life Of Agony, Fear Factory, Morbid Angel, Madball again, Gorefest again, Downset.

OK gonna try and list as much as I can remember now:

Slayer, Morbid Angel, Venom, Sick Of It All, Gorefest, Ancestral Sin, Machine Head, Mercyful Fate, Saxon, Cradle Of Filth, Immortal, Marduk, S.O.D., The Gathering, Biohazard, Fear Factory, Altar, Madball, Benediction, Hideous Sun Demons, My Dying Bride, After Forever, Samael, Type O Negative, MUSE, Rammstein, The Tea Party, Consolation, Nembrionic, Evisceration, Nocturnal Silence, Pyaemia, Cannibal Corpse, Dark Funeral, Ancient, Behemoth, Haggard, Tristania, Pro-Pain, Goddess Of Desire, Bifrost, Gutwrench, Lagwagon, No Fun At All, Moonspell, Therion, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Faith and the Muse, In the Nursery, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Kovenant, Kreator, Krisiun, Impaled Nazarene, Daeonia, Within Temptation, Orphanage, Korn, Death, Grave, Hate-Squad, Osdorp Posse, Rage, Theatre Of Tragedy, Trail Of Tears, Neuk, De Heideroosjes, Deicide, Suffocation, Marilyn Manson, T-Nailed, Coal Chamber, Enslaved, Mystic Circle, Exodus, God Dethroned, Hypocrisy, Iced Earth, Incubus, Laberinto, Limp Bizkit, Mayhem, Voi Vod, Nevermore, Pantera, Testament, Pitch Shifter, Shelter.....etc

Leonis, I've seen the Tea Party thrice as well now, and they're among the best bands I've ever seen play live! Locations were Paradiso and The Melkweg, both "rock temples" of Amsterdam. Especially Paradiso is a fabulous location: it's a former church with beautiful stained glass windows...
The Tea Party is one of my favourite bands on CD, but seeing them live adds even more to their brilliance. I can't believe three people can create such a full and complete sound!

Last year in December, I went to see Live. I wasn't expecting much, because, to tell you the truth, I don't like Live very much. But friends were going, so I went to.

I was pleasantly surprised. Their music sounds much better...er...live...than it does normally, and they really did put on a great show.

I also went to the Korn concert a few years back, which absolutely rocked.

The best live performance I have been present at was not a concert, but a gig. It was at a local nightclub, and the band was my fav Aussie act- The Superjesus. (If you haven't heard of them, please go listen to some of their stuff- they are really good.) The small club resulted in great acoustics and sound, and also allowed myself to get to the front without too much elbowing.

Next month, I'm going to M One, which should rock.

1985 - REO Speedwagon and Survivor

1985 or 86 - Kiss and Krokus

1987 - 38 Special and Bon Jovi

2001 - Journey, Peter Frampton, John Waite

Let's see...

When I was very young I was taken to a Peter Paul and mary concert and was taken on stage... The only ones that I can think of since then are a Foreigner concert that I went to with my best friends Jason and Jennie and a Boyz II Men/Tevin Cambill/Babyface concert that I took my girlfriend and two friends to as a Christmas present...

Woodstock altho I was only around a year old.Kansas which was cool because it was very early on thier career around 79 I think. They played a free concert in Pa. in a campground/amusment park must have been only like 150-200 people. We heard something going on and just wondered in. I think the first time I heard them on the radio was around 3 years later. Most of the rest were in the mid to late 80's. Aerosmith, pink floyd twice,Greatfull Dead 3 times,Santana 3-4 times,Steve miller 3 times,Blue Oyster Cult 4 times, the Kinks,Loverboy,The Tubes,Ted Nugent,ELP,CSN no Young,Jeff Beck,Ac/Dc,Rolling Stones twice,Chicago,Eric Clapton,Asia twice,Genesis,Neil Young and the shocking Pinks,The Animals which was just an amazingly Great show must have been only around 4000 people which is a very small crowd for S.P.A.C. they played from 8 pm to some time after 1 am.There are a few more I can't rember but these are the ones I still have the ticket stubs from.

LOL Leonis, I'm a smart girl! ;) I wear good earplugs when I go to concerts... improves the sound as well, filters out distortion
Although I confess that the first 2 or 3 years I didn't always wear earplugs... hopefully my hearing hasn't suffered - so far it's still good.

I love the Interzone Mantras... thought it was a great comeback after Triptych. Triptych is a great CD but IMHO misses something that the Edges Of Twilight and Transmission do have...

Marilyn Manson, gODHEAD, Disturbed, Mudvayne, System of a down(2 times), NoFX(2 times), Vans Warped Tour 2002, Bigwig.....I've been to a lot more shows than that. Those are just some of the ones of the top of my head. At Manson I puked on the opening bands tour bus and the singer laughed at me for quite a while...I saw system once in doors and out doors.....NoFX I got into for free both times(they played 2 gigs because the first one sold out so fast) I got into vans for free by sneaking in...Bigwig was the sickest circle pit I ever have been in. The sickest show I've ever been to crowd wise would have to be Strung Out though.

yeah christina! those are the bands i love. i'm a huge manson fan, but i've never been to a concert. in fact, i've only been to one ever, and it was Molson Canadian's Snowjam which was on this summer. it had lots of cool bands, but none of my favourites. i want to go to ozzfest so bad! and i need to see Marilyn Manson, godhead and disturbed in concert. those are the 3 i have to see before i die or my life will not be full, lol.

Awg, I think it's only the 7th time or so... Still within acceptable limits I think. ;)

I've seen Tom Helsen, Suimasen, Johan, Devics, The Young Gods, Das Pop, Vive la Fête, Praga Khan, An Pierlé, After Forever, Zornik, Pinback and Godspeed You Black Emperor! and And you will know us by the trail of dead. Don't have any new ones on the agenda, but maybe I'll go to Nada Surf in a few weeks.

I will give one experience of a out door festival that I went to when I was traveling around Europe. I just finished working in Salzburg Austria. I was working in a kitchen at a hostile. It was my last day because there was a huge out door festival in Nurmerburg Germany on the weekend. So I decided that I would take some Jam for my bread. At this point I was very tired of eating plain bread. So this is about two days before it started and I threw the jam into my back pack and off I go. Every thing is great I get there set my tent up and get ready to see some bands. Did not have any jam today to excited to eat. So I set out to get a schedule of the times the bands are going to play. Bands like kiss, Aerosmith, Super tramp, Tragicaly Hip, Our lady peace, Bush, Beck, just to name a few. And today was a very hot day about 28 to 30 C and we were sitting in a open stadium with no protection from the sun. So that evening lying in my sleeping bag with sun stoke was a down-er. I missed kiss play.
So I wake the next day feeling like I was hit by a train. But what the hell I was going to have a good time. Know I am hungry And decide to have some JAM and bread. Um Um Um. All is well until that night with food poisoning, man what a bummer. And running back and forth to a porta poty that you share with 40 000 other people that miss the toilet has a few bad memories. May be the ants crawling around my jam should have been a clue.
