Attalus 09-17-2002 08:26 PM

*Shrugs* Modern music sux, IMHO, so I don't listen to it. It hasn't been the same since Jim Morrison died.

Lord of Alcohol 09-17-2002 08:35 PM

Yikes! I'll go a decade further than Attalus till the late 80's. Then came grunge and rap. Blah

Jim says thanks Attalus.
I personally thinks there's always been sucky and excellent music and now is no different. It is a poor indictment though when a song needs:

Two artists featuring four guest artists presented by three guest producer for another producer's productions in conjunction with P.Diddy (He's involved in everything somehow).
Written by sixteen 'hit' writers but also includes 37 samples of proven hit songs and one obscure yet cred providing funk track.
Performed by an army of sessions muso's yet all you hear is the samples and the twelve programers.

Everything is so unnessesarily complicated now...

Iron_Ranger 09-17-2002 09:24 PM

Words cant express how much I agree.

I stopped listening to raido a while ago. I havent liked anything that has come out in 3 or 4 years.

The last 'new' band I like that came out was Days of the New. Ironic huh??

Same here. I listen to the 1980's and EARLY 1990's Music mostly. The crap they play is all rap, and I don't like rap. OR country. bla...

My only question is what ever happened to correct SPELLING!! All you have to do is look at some of the names to see what I mean.

Neb 09-18-2002 12:51 AM

A lot of new stuff does indeed suck. And many old things are very good, but there are some good new things as well. "Epiphany" by "Bad Religion", for example, is possibly the best song I've ever heard.

Bad Religon isnt new though.

Redblueflare 09-18-2002 01:20 AM

Unlike most people here I happen to like some of those songs. *incredulous stares* Who cares if it takes more than one person to make a good song? A band isn't just one person now is it? I like old bands like Led Zeppelin too and Jimmy Paige didn't make that all by himself. And even if he did I don't care!

Your right, it often takes two or more people to make good music. But normaly those are called 'bands' and doesnt go through all the non sence that the list above does .

Ah another good point. That's just the way hip hop and rap is. The easiest way to make a good song is to put your head together! It's not the first time there's been songs made by two different artists simultaenously, it's just that not everyone liked them! I'm not trying to sound offended, i'm just defending *some* of the music I like.

Iron_Ranger 09-18-2002 01:36 AM

Its ok, you should defend what you like, if its being attack. I am just not too up for Top 40 music. Seems all kind of manufacted to me.

As for the rap sence, well. I will refrain from commenting ;)

Understood. I'm not into heavy meatal or country. But everything else is fine. ;) Especially the *old* stuff.

I wasn't attempting to bash any particular style of music - I honestly have not heard a style I have not found something good in.

I'm not even against credited sampling.

I am tired of this current marketing trend though, because that's all it is, and it's a lame one at that - trying to hype very ordinary and common music industry practices by jargoning them up.

LMAO! Okay now I admit doing *that* is completely unecessary. :D

Sio 09-18-2002 02:15 AM

The UK charts are easily amongst the worst in the world, really, im not lyign here. Pop Idol alone spun of three cheesy manufactured soloists, pop gropu (I think that was the name) spun off two band, Liberty X and Hear'Say, and now Pop Idol Rivals will spin off a further two bands, one boy one girl to see who does best in the charts!
Its getting overly rediculous the charts now-a-days, what happened to the music of past, where it was instrumental or the person ould actaully SING! unaided by some computer to change their voice
All I can say is forgive these shallow times and listen to some odler music till our charts recover, but in my generation theyve always been bad so lets hope the change around comes back soon, with heaps load of prog rock :D its time for tis comeback hehe
Until then keep listening to old chart faviourites such as The Police and Genesis! Both are among my faviourte music ever, who coulda known a Geordie could sing so well! (Will the American board users get that previous stament? lol)

LOL Leonis, great thread mate!

I do agree with you, the sampling and recycling is really bad these days! It happens sooo often that I hear a rap song I think I know, only to note subtle differences in lyrics or beat and finding out that they just recycled the main tune. Same for all those rappers recycling old pop songs. Really fed up with that
Very funny list you'd compiled there! Yeah, it's weird when they have like 3 different 'featurings'in that list. I wonder why it is that so many people in that genre just keep putting out singles with everybody else. In proper bands, you see far less of such cooperation - usually when a famous musician plays with another band it's because he left the previous band :D
So on the one hand you could make a case for the high sociality of rappers, seeing how they all work together like one big group, but on the other hand I'm cynic enough to suspect they're just looking for ways to make even more cash with even less interesting songs.

However, I also absolutely agree with you that there can be found something good in any musical style. People going "ooh it's all crap these days, the only good music was made in the (fill in any pre-90s decade)".... well....
That attitude decidely annoys me, firstly because I am pretty sure they haven't got a clue what they're talking about since they assume that all modern music is like the stuff you hear in the Top 100 and secondly, because it's fine to prefer to listen to older music, just don't be so pedantic to say all modern stuff is crap. Be wise enough to recognise it's just a matter of taste. Heck, I don't listen to the Stones or the Beatles but I wouldn't even dare to *think* they are crap. I'm aware of my limitations and it might very well be the case that I simply can't *understand* their genius. :D
I listen to classical music almost exclusively sometimes, doesn't mean I go around saying all modern pop music is crap. There is a lot of musical genius in the world today.

ROTFL! Not bad, Leonis! You should get a night job as a copy editor for the industry ;) :D

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the hyping of ordinary things to 'jazz em up' or get more attention. Seems like we live in a world where anything 'ordinary' is to be avoided like the proverbial plague these days!

That is indeed downright ridiculous.

Leonis, did I tell you I had the dubious honour of being barred entry into P.Diddy's studio? I was dropping off a CD to a co-writer friend of mine who doing a vocal for him at his studio. There was no way I was going to be let in the building though, so I had to leave it with the huge bouncer. :D Is that my new claim to fame!? :D :D

-------------------------------------

Now, to those who dissed modern music - it's a bit rough to say all modern music is CRAP. What about the mountains of brilliant work you are not allowed to hear because of "cultural superiority complex" (if you're in America) or "slavish devotion to American trends syndrom" (if you're in anywhere other than America)?

Don't blame the musicians/writers. Blame the system.

There are mountains of brilliant CDs 'no-one' will hear because of the way things are. :(

I honestly think music today is exceptional. Contemporary recordings are now better recorded, more diverse, influenced by a larger variety of societies, and exceptionally visionary. I get somewhat frustrated with older music at times.

But if you want good music you have to KNOW WHERE TO LOOK! Don't go waiting for the radio to spoon feed you. That's what babies do. There's no excuse in this day and age, not to be able to find some new music that excites you.

Oh yes. And it may take more than one listen to UNDERSTAND this new music. ;)

Do we really believe that the social commentaries made by your parents generation are the only word on human existence? Are the melodies of yesteryear the ultimate way 12 notes can be arranged?

Bollocks.

Excuses, excuses all. SHAME ON YOU GUYS. (Except for Leonis who has a snotfilled, dry, pus-crusted rotting pea for a frontal lobe) :D :D

I agree fullheartedly, Yorick. But weren't you someone who actually liked Puddle of Mudd? Just checking, can't recall if it was you or someone else... I, sir, feel all the shame that the situation warrants. I am sure that your own music is great, but when you talk about spending a lot of effort wading through mountains of dreck like "rap," P.Diddy, and "the Glyph," as "Prince" was known as for a while, to find a few jewels, I'm afraid that I lack the time and energy. As well as the inclination. People who like new music, like you, seem to be driven to do those things, but, not me. I already know where a few jewels are, and that's enough for me. :D
